This is probably a bit controversial, but I’ve decided that Christmas would be better if we basically ignored it until Dec 24th, then put up trees and lights etc, and had 12 days of merriment. I don’t think the long buildup to just 24 hours of fun (or not) is healthy.

At ENO, musicians got their redundancy emails during the interval of a show. During the interval. And then carried on with the performance because they are professionals, which cannot be said for the people running the place.

Not a lot of people know this, but all the music for English coronations is written in the key that corresponds to the first name of the monarch. So Charles III's service will be entirely in C major, Elizabeth II's was in E major, George V's was in G major etc etc

One remarkable thing is that the level of music-making we heard today is the norm at Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal, and many other places across the UK. Less grand, most of the time, but always performed with great care and sensitivity, and admirable skill.

I’m sure some people do it like this - it was the norm when my parents were young I think. Obviously lots of people have to work on some of those 12 days (I would) but more people can take holiday then than in mid December.

I knew the singing was going to be really, really good yesterday, but it was even better than I’d imagined. Obviously that takes vocal and musical skill, but also focus, stamina, concentration, and the ability to deal with the highest pressure. 🧵
