I teared up watching this go live. I’m beyond happy for fans to finally see what we’ve been working on. A lot of passion has gone into Gears of War: E-Day!
I’m so unbelievably excited to announce that I’ve returned to
@CoalitionGears
as Content and Lore Coordinator.
Hard to put into words just how happy I am, I’ll be coordinating various pieces of content and of course the LORE for the
@GearsofWar
franchise!
Excited to announce that Ive transitioned from contractor to Microsoft FTE, with the new title of Lore and Content Manager for the Gears of War Franchise.
Crazy to think its been 7 years since I moved to Vancouver to work on my all time favorite franchise.
Dream job achieved!⚙️
Been watching reaction videos and reading hundreds of posts all day. The outpouring of hype, happiness and feelings from Gears of War fans for the E-Day trailer has truly made this one of the best damn days of my life!
Hi everyone, today will essentially be my last week at The Coalition. Hard to believe I went from being a fan to actually getting to work on and ship multiple Gears titles and even getting to design some multiplayer content for my all time favourite series. It's been an honour.
Really proud to have worked on these skins. I pitched the themes for Academy and Firestarter and heavily helped with the art direction. Gary I helped figure out some of the smaller details on him.
I teared up watching this go live. I’m beyond happy for fans to finally see what we’ve been working on. A lot of passion has gone into Gears of War: E-Day!
In Gears 5 the reason why one of Tai's earring is present in Kadar Valley is because the Locust Drone next to it had ripped it off Tai while he was being processed and kept it as a war trophy up until their death during the Assault on Mount Kadar.
I’m so happy that the Stranded Dizzy skin I worked on is finally out, hands down one of the most lore packed skins to date. The amount of detailed the character team was able to pack into this model is just incredible!
Hard to believe that it's already been 3 years since the release of Gears 5. I'll always be grateful for the fact that I was given the opportunity to design some neat lore rich character skins, something I never thought could ever happen and which helped get me to where I am now.
A neat piece of trivia; Academy Anthony has a small COG shaped bullseye sticker on his armor that his fellow trainees slapped on as a prank due to him getting voted "most likely to get shot" as a reference to his original Gears of War bio.
After 12 years of waiting, Gears 2 Tai finally returns as "Hollow Storm Tai" in Operation 5 Hollow Storm.
I've been trying for a long time to champion the return of this skin and I'm so unbelievably happy it has finally made it into the game!!
Neat piece of minor trivia, the Sorrowed Sway expression is based on a scene from the Rise of RAAM comic. The Lambent have additional variants of the expression that have them scream in pain as an additional reference to the comic scene.
Not sure how many people noticed but in Operation 6 all the Hivebuster skin variants that previously only depicted the Scorpio Squad symbol on their chest armor have now been updated to have personalized symbols that reflect each specific character.
Neat tidbit, the design for the Hologram weapon skin set was based off Ukkon’s locust hologram projector from the Rise of RAAM comic (Issue 2). The handle on the skins is the projector that's projecting the hologram portion.
Since the Major is out, here are some neat details;
- The Gorasni flag is present on his left hand guard
- His name is written on his chest & back pouch in UIR
- The medallion on his belt is a nod to his original concept art for Judgment that had him depicted having a medallion
For anyone wondering, the symbol on Hivebuster Anya’s chest armor is her CIC Controller emblem that was present on her military attire in Gears of War and Gears of War 2.
Added this wicked NECA Theron Marcus test shot prototype figure to my collection. Love finding and collecting these types of rare and unique pieces of Gears of War history.
Happy to see the Bare Your Teeth Banner I pitched make it into the game today. I requested that it pay homage to the "Bare Your Teeth" Gears of War 2 reveal trailer and the UI team knocked it out of the park!😄
Now the big question is do I follow through on my internal promise of drinking the sealed 13 year old Imulsion energy drink I've been saving for a big Gears related occasion.
Is it even safe to drink anymore or am I gonna catch something worse them lambency?😅
Cell Block Marcus was to my knowledge the last skin that I had a hand in designing, it’s meant to depict Marcus during roughly the first year of his imprisonment in The Slab. A lot of the details on his prison jumpsuit and his visible injuries are taken from The Slab novel.1/6
I'm so very happy seeing people get excited over Major Paduk, it was one of the skins this Operation that I pitched and helped with the direction on. Its supposed to represent Paduk in his prime during the Pendulum Wars when he was Major in the UIR Infantry.
For those interested here’s a little deep dive into Hollow Storm Sam’s design and some of the inserting details present on her. It's not as reference rich as Drill Instructor but still has some neat nods here and there. (1/5)
Since Clayton is one of my all-time fav characters I really wanted to pitch a cool detail heavy design for his Hivebuster skin. The concept and character teams did a fantastic job on the design and model incorporating all my crazy ideas! (cont)
Hahaha beat me to it! Yup, the scroll on Crimson Skorge is the same type of Kantus Scroll that was found as a collectible in Gears of War 2. It was an addition I requested to give the skin just a bit more lore detail. Good job noticing it! 👍
Going through G2 collectibles and noticed this...
Bairds translation is similar to Skorge’s “I am Horde, for we are many with vengeance” line in Gears 5.
And the exact scroll is on crimson Skorge.
These details! Emotional stuff
For those that are unsure where the hammer is from, its a Locust tool used by the Tremor Boomer to summon Seeders to specific locations by hammering a giant spike called the Thumper into the ground. It was only ever seen once in the Gears of War 3 "RAAM's Shadow" DLC campaign.
Some neat details about the two weapon skin sets I did the pitch’s for:
- Venom Burn is based on the Venom Bombs aesthetic design along with depicting the longterm effects of the venom gas
- The Path is based on the carvings seen depicting the Weilehan islander’s rite of passage
Glad to see the updated design of Armored Hoffman that I helped on is out now, I suggested to bring back a lot of the unique armor details that he originally had on his Gears of War 1&2 model like his extended shoulder straps and other armor details that weren't present in G4/UE.
They did the thing and I honestly don’t mind it.
I do hope we also see some creative accessories for them like; a Classic skin variant for Marcus, a King Raven glider, a holstered Lancer back bling, Breaker Mace/Butcher Cleaver/Chain Staff pick axe …etc.
Some neat background info for those interested;
The idea behind the "Trinity" skin theme was to depict Skorge and Vrol in ritualistic armor thats been crafted from the bones of various Hollow creature’s, worn only while performing sacred worships to the Trinity of Worm’s.
Went to a local comic shop and to my surprise found some older Gears of War comic issues to add to my collection, really cool to find these out in the wild.
The number 11 decal present on Hollow Storm Clayton's pocket was actually me trying to add a small sneaky reference to Gears of War 3's release year of 2011, which was when Clayton was first introduced in the Gears of War series and when we as a community saved that boi.
Neat detail; the emblem that appears on the COG Commando's shoulders is the same one Hivebuster Dom has painted on his chest. The emblem is meant to be the symbol of the COG Commandos, which Dom was once apart of.
Excited to see the UIR Sandswept skins I helped design finally get added to the game. When I pitched the design for these two I really wanted to make them feel as if they were an extension of the UIR army that specialized in desert combat and harsh terrain survival. (1/3)
I'm really happy to finally be able to say that in TU10 we gave RAAM his iconic unique knife. I know its a small update but one some players have really wanted. Every RAAM skin variant should have their knife model updated.
"Cut off the head of the snake, and the body dies."
Not sure how many people noticed, but it appears the Gears 5 essential store section was updated a while ago to include some new Banners and Marks, some of which I pitched.
The Last Day mark being my favourite since its meant to pay homage to the Gears 2 The Last Day trailer.
Crazy how it's been 5 years since Gears of War 4's release, being the first Gears game I worked on it still holds a special place in the series for me.
Happy Anniversary Gears of War 4!💀⚙️
Big Happy 9th Anniversary to Gears of War: Judgment!
Even though it may be one of the most divisive Gears of War titles, I still really enjoyed a lot of aspects of it! Not to mentioned it introduced one of my all time favourite characters, Garron Paduk!
If you like Michael Barrick but have only played RAAM's Shadow then I highly recommend reading the Gears of War: Hollow comic (issues
#1
-6) if you haven't, this was his introduction into the series. The comic takes place about 5 years after the events of RS (just after Gears 1).
Gotta say they both look pretty good, a bit smoother facial design’s but thats just Fortnites art style. Gonna be really nice to see Marcus and Chief finally together in the same game.
Really happy to see the Locust Ravager get released, it was one of the few Locust/Swarm team skins that I pitched and did the design direction for. Here’s a small design “deep dive” into the idea behind the skin.(1/5)
"We have only one option...attack!"
Operation Hollow Storm has started! It really takes me back to the Gears 2 days with all the themed content, hope people enjoy all the new additions!
A neat little change we made to Armored Dizzy was that we swapped his pistol holster to his right thigh so he can actually holster his pistol in it now.
So glad that Hivebuster Tai has been revealed, his armor is themed and designed after his Islander heritage, adorned with various Islander symbols. Additionally his knife is modelled to look like the same one he's shown to have from The Quickening comic.
If my memory is correct C Company Bernie was one of the last skins I pitched. The design was meant to be based on her appearance during the Pendulum Wars as seen in the Gears of War: Unsaid comic issue

Fun Gears Fact:
In the Gears of War: Judgment guide book it lists a D. Carmine and W. Carmine as fallen COG Tag collectible Gears. However the names ended up getting changed for the final release of the game to be unrelated to the Carmine family.
I'm so very happy with the way the Giant Worm Banner came out, the UI Team absolutely nailed the artwork!!
I really wanted to pitch something that referenced this iconic Gears of War 2 moment in some way for the Operation and ended up suggesting it as a banner.
This worn little lighter has been through so much over the years. From Ilima City to Old Ephyra, the memory of its owner remains.
"Here's to the good fight and living to see another day!" - Michael Barrick
For the past year or so I have been working very closely with my friends

E-DAY. I created the brand new logo, updated the iconic omen and of course did the illustration work ✍️

Was gonna wait till they arrived but honestly I can't wait that long.
Official Gears of War COG boot slippers, created as potential merch items, but never went into full production, so only a handful of samples were ever made.
Big thanks to
@guywelch2000
for the info on these!
A huge Happy 15th Anniversary to Gears of War 2!
I still clearly remember rushing from school at 3pm to wait in line at my local Future Shop right up until the midnight launch with all my buddies!
Hope Runs Deep.
Happy 15 year anniversary to both the original Gears of War and the franchise as a whole!💀⚙️
I still remember release day when I skipped class with my buddy to play the game for the first time at his place, and ever since them this franchise has become a huge part of my life.
Tomorrow is my dads birthday, last week I was casually trying to ask him what he would want and he jokingly answered by saying he just wanted to see me. So I secretly booked a flight tonight to fly home to surprise him for his birthday tomorrow.
HiveBuster Gabe tidbits:
- The "DURABILIS QUALITAS" patch on his chest is the same one he wears on his undershirt in Gears Tactics
- The patch on his shoulder represents the squad he gets transferred into after he busts himself down to Sergeant at the end of the Bloodlines novel
Valera was briefly conceived early on as a helmeted Onyx Guard-like character, however her design was eventually changed to have her appear more unique. Her armor brings to mind the speed and flexibility needed by a reconnaissance soldier.
So happy to see
@Max_Dunbar
at this years FanExpo, such an amazing and wonderful dude. Always a pleasure seeing him.
Also got this mind blowing commission featuring Hollow Storm Clayton from him.
The pose is in reference to the Gears of War 2 Rendezvous With Death trailer.
If you’re a Dizzy fan then you’ll immediately recognize the “Betty 314” back armor decal on Hivebuster Dizzy. This was probably my most significant suggestion contribution to the skin design since I felt it fit perfectly with the personal customization feel of the HB skins
This is hands down one of the coolest things I’ve ever gotten, its just so unbelievable to be able to hold Hivebuster Clayton’s helmet in my hands!
The biggest THANK YOU to
@Marar_X
for this amazing piece, it’s phenomenal!!
Ballistic Publishing’s “The Art of Gears of War 3 Collectors Folio Edition” is still such an amazing piece. I remember waiting for preorders to go live and managed to snag

, I could have chosen a much lower number but 11 is my lucky number.
"Son, you get my Maralin to the doctor and I'll do any damn thing you want. I'll sign up. I'll join your damn Lifeboat. Anything so long as my girls live." – Dizzy Wallin (Coalition’s End)
Lastly the biggest inspirations for the overall design of his Drill Instructor outfit were from MSgt. Farell from Edge of Tomorrow and Sgt. Zim from Starship Troopers. He even has a few nods to Zim like the belt baton and leg pouches. (6/6)
