Orthopaedic Surgery Resident | Shoulder & Elbow Fellow 2025-2026 | Orthopaedics Outcomes and Methodology Research | College Football Fan | Wannabe Golfer
PSA:
If you are a DO student and anyone is “advising” that you do not need the USMLE they are flat out wrong. Take the test, and keep as many options as possible open no matter what specialty you pursue.
You shouldn’t have to debate or contemplate this, just take both tests.
I am super stoked to say I matched for Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle!!
I am ecstatic to be heading to the PNW next summer!!
Go Huskies!
Very bitter / sweet match day today.
I had some great mentees/friends/basically family that didn’t match ortho, and some that did.
Unfortunately, the “game” is always evolving between P/F boards, signaling, and medical school expansion.
I am going to put together an
Students, if you want to excel on your audition rotations nothing is more important than simply being mentally and physically PRESENT.
Show up early.
Be attentive and engaged.
Stay off your phone.
Be the last person to leave.
All within your sphere of influence.
#Match2024
Boards becoming P/F is going to make the ortho match rate even scarier. More will apply because they won’t self select out after 2nd year
research year is almost a must unless you have significant output / connections during med school
The game is changing
Will be interesting
All of these paid “mentorship” subscriptions for medical students popping up on social media are so cringe/predatory.
Do not pay for mentorship. They are not your mentor, they are using your anxiety for cash flow and hoping for “mail box money”.
Plenty of real mentors out
Extremely honored / excited to be recognized as the Outstanding Resident of the Year Award in Orthopaedic Surgery by the AOF and
@aoaodocs
. What a great start to PGY5!!
🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
We now have a paid research fellow position open.
For those interested in working on ortho trauma research with our program send me a DM. Will be a great experience and will be very involved the residency and will prep you well to apply ortho
If you are a DO planning to audition for orthopaedic surgery next year and need someone to review your plan I’m happy to help.
@TylerWillUIW
is also a good person to have look at this. The difference between matching / not is heavily influenced by your audition strategy.
Huge research day:
A paper I have been working on for years is finally in print at
@jbjs
Abstract accepted for presentation at the ASSH Annual Meeting in Boston
Manuscript accepted at
@JArthroplasty
R&R at
@OJSM_SportsMed
Strong work from the Cowboys Ortho team 🤠🤠🤠
I start my pediatric orthopaedics rotation in May and I just ordered a paw patrol and a Lightning McQueen scrub cap from etsy so I guess you could say things are getting pretty serious haha.

I had an amazing time presenting to members of
@StudentAOAO
summarizing the current literature, and my thoughts regarding matching orthopaedic surgery as a DO.
We had an amazing turnout, with over 150 students in attendance!!
I can’t wait to see where the coming classes of DO
I woke up in the greatest country of all time.
I feel so blessed to have to have been born in this country.
I am proud to be an American!
God bless the USA!

Say an applicant is applying ortho:
What happens if a program has already downloaded the applicants scores, and say they got a 475 on COMLEX 1 (that shouldn’t have been reported), and a 575 on comlex 2.
The 575 by itself wouldn’t have totally crushed the dream, but the 475
In 2022, the COMLEX Level 1 exam went pass-fail, and the NBOME stopped reporting 3-digit exam scores.
But in 2024, the NBOME started reporting them again… by accidentally releasing them to residency programs in Residency CAS.
Fixed multiple hip fractures today cut to close as the only surgeon scrubbed in while my attending ran the flouro.
Very blessed to train at a place that preps us well, and then gives us the trust to fly on our own early in residency when earned. 🔥💪🏼
1/4 With step 1 scores starting to come out I just wanted to say that matching is far more than just your board scores. I have multiple mentees asking me if their scores are too low or if there is still hope.
This is okay advice, unless you want to do academics or a highly competitive specialty.
The person from Harvard will always have an upper hand on the person from a no name state MD school or DO school.
The better your school/access to resources the more accessible the top
Today was an incredible day in the OR.
I did my first Kocher langenbeck approach for an acetabulum ORIF with posterior column/wall plates cut to close (with close guidance obviously) and I am over the moon rn. Makes the grind of residency so worth it.
👏👏

1st OITE complete, publication in Arthroscopy accepted, publication in BMJ accepted, did my first tibial nail cut to close in the drivers seat. Wow what a week!!!! LFG!
The primary objective of this talk will be to summarize the current evidence in the literature regarding (or that can be extrapolated to) matching orthopaedic surgery as a DO. This includes board scores, research, research years, signaling, audition rotations, dual applying etc.
We are so grateful for mentors like
@Ortho_Jake
for continuing to give back to medical students!! Check out this zoom event on April 3rd at 7PM CST . Registration in bio!
As I have been updating my CV for fellowship applications coming up I realized this article was my 75th manuscript accepted for publication. I am grateful to work with an amazing team. I have been very blessed throughout this journey. More to come.
Where my DO orthopaedics applicants at?? Happy to help / mentor in any way possible!! Excited to start reading through the applications. HMU with any questions. Apply to OSU if you are trying to have a good time 💪🏼🦴

Am I dreaming???
This was the reviewer comments for our study that I started almost 3 years ago:
“This article is well done. Congratulations. My only suggestion is more pictures”.
Amazing day 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Huge day for the

applicants!!!
Congrats to everyone who gets the good news, and for those who don’t I am willing to help/advise however needed. Just DM.
Good luck this week everyone 🫡
Something I noticed this year as well is that many applicants received Step 2 scores in August/September that were no where near competitive for ortho, but at this point it was really late to set up a backup plan. Furthermore, DO students without home programs / access to
I think this would actually just contribute to making residency applications less holistic.
Imagine this scenario:
P/F Step 1.
Limit Research to 5 pubs
P/F Pre-Clinical grades.
P/F Clinical grades.
No class rank.
Step 2 scores come in late in the process.
Who wins? How do you
ERAS should limit the number of publications an applicant can list to five and instruct applicants to list their five most important. This would help prioritize meaningful research contributions on a few projects and disincentivize the current arms race of publication padding.
Ortho is the best, however, the biggest problem with orthopedics is getting a spot. Hopefully, we can dial in some research regarding recent changes such as preference signaling, P/F boards, and ERAS layout to better advise future ortho applicants.
Start asking current
1 in 3 academic physicians report they are considering leaving their institution within 2 years. Burnout and lack of professional fulfillment were associated with intention to leave; a comprehensive approach will be needed to reduce physician turnover.
Big things ahead for Victor, no doubt. 🚀🚀
We have an OSU/UIW remote research collaboration on several ongoing research projects, and previous successful publications in JBJS and JSES journals.
Vic and the crew at UIW have a different motor, and have really been fun to work
I am tired of talking to students who are receiving advise from their school that is the opposite of reality for matching ortho/surgical subs (mostly DO students). If you know students looking to match ortho needing advice have them hmu. Happy to help.

It’s only 6pm and we have already had
Open book pelvis
Bilateral femur fx
Blasted plateau
Hip fractures
pediatric compartment syndrome
Pathological hip fracture in a young patient.
WTF is happening this weekend!! 😳😳😂😂
This year, 10 Columbia medical students applied in orthopedic surgery.
Collectively, they applied to 125 programs *without* signaling.
So how many interview offers did this elite group of applicants receive from their non-signaled applications?
-🥁-
-🥁-
-🥁-
One.
Also anecdotal, but a lot of students are simply not taking step 1 serious during the first 2 years, due to pass fail, and then finding out just how hard of a test it is to pass as time approaches.
Also, hurts them on step 2 even if they do pass because there is so much
Applicants should interview at as many places as possible. Every interview is earned, and they should give themselves the best chance to match. Interviews should only be passed on if there is no interest in the program, or the applicant cannot afford it. IMO.
Momentum is crazy high at my program rn.
Tons of cases.
Tons of parties.
Attendings fully bought in.
Residents fully brought in.
Best merch in the ortho game.
Pubs rolling in.
Matched our top 2 of over 600 applicants.
Annual Crawfish boil is tomorrow.
Like damn!!!
Dr. Ryan shouldn’t have to explain himself. He had an amazing idea, worked hard, created a brand and sold the brand for what I imagine is a nice 💰. Awesome for him, living the dream!
On of my motivations for selling B&B to McGraw Hill was to increase the number of schools buying subscriptions for students. We need to maximize institutional sales so the burden is not on students to purchase their resources. MH has an enormous sales team to make this happen.
my advice to orthopaedic surgery applicants is to dedicate one of your 10 slots allotted to discuss your hobbies and interests. I think this will set you apart in reviewing your application, and will give easy discussion points at interviews that will make you more memorable.
Disappointed to confirm that the AAMC has removed the “Hobbies & Interests” field from the 2024 ERAS application. It might seem trivial, but that small field had value, and it’s going to make interviews less interesting and personal.

here is some data pulled from
@TheNRMP
#Match2022
for orthopedic surgery: 1470 applicants for 875 spots (unmatched 40%).
MD 4th years: 1086 applicants, 705 matched (35% unmatched).
DO 4th years: 205 applicants, 111 matched (46% unmatched).

Pro tip students:
Get to know someone before you ask to help out with research
For those I know/trust I will go out of my way to find ways to get them published and teach them how to do research
If it’s our first time talking I can’t trust you with my work/patient info
I strongly believe the best way to provide service to your neighbors/humanity is to pick your role/trade and then strive to be the very best at it day in and day out.
Having a great time in Chicago for the

Clinical Scholar Career Development Program.
Grateful to
@ASESmembers
for providing me the opportunity 💪🏼
In regards to exercising in residency I treat each week as a 7 game series
Work out 4 times in a week and I win the series
Tough week, but was able to put in a late night HIIT ride in with
@RobinNYC
while on call to push the series to game 7 tomorrow
Filling my rings erryday💪🏼
Very excited for this publication in JAAOS!! We demonstrate the health inequities present in orthopaedic trauma literature!
Health Inequities in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery in the... : JAAOS - Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons
Still 3 days to go!! Not a bad intern year, and this is missing a good amount of cases I forgot to log. Seeing tons of progress the last couple months. I can’t wait to keep progressing 💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼

orthopaedic surgery stats:
ERAS had 1727 applicants
NRMP has 1492 applicants
916 ortho spots available (915 filled)
235 applicants either withdrew or dual applied and matched into something else (NRMP doesn’t count them in the # applied).

Yeezys are my go-to in the OR. I keep them fresh with waterproof spray and arthroscopy boots.

The objective of this study — — is to assess applicants’ opinions and perspectives toward preference signaling in orthopaedic surgery prior to the 2022–2023 match results, and to evaluate the signaling strategies utilized by applicants
@VicMartinez_24
We get free food at every hospital I go to. One hospital gives us such a large amount that I go shopping at the end of every month and still never max it out. Stuff to consider when picking a residency, students.
came up with this idea brain storming stuff we could get published with my friend and our new research fellow Arjun and he crushed it. Proud of the team, we have multiple other studies coming from this idea that should be published soon! Averaging a pub a month @ OK State ortho💪🏼
Check out our manuscript evaluating .Reoperation and Complication Rates Following Patellar Plating! So proud to have this in print!!!! : JBJS Open Access
@BrooketheOstomy
We work at 3 main hospitals, at one we get free meals, and one we get 350$ credit per month, and the other we get 250$ credit per month. + all food is discounted. Never have ran out of $$. All of which have resident lounges with free drinks and snacks. Pretty lucky honestly.
Patient we saw a little bit ago, decided it was a good idea to get “yeet” and fell out of a tree 30 ft. when trying to jump from said tree into a lake. Of note his shoulder was dislocated and we rolled up and reduced it in the IR suite which was dope.
Check out our most recent publication in the Journal of Arthroplasty!
Great progress can be made in the way we report complications and negative outcomes in arthroplasty research.
Inadequate Reporting of Complications in Randomized Controlled Trials ...
@kwilliams_2024
I have never actually seen a resident be rude to OR staff. But, I have seen (almost daily) OR staff being rude to residents for simply existing with no inciting event.
So many things to unpack with this haha.
This project was inspired from reading similar literature from other orthopaedic procedures, got rolling quickly from a multi-institutional text thread with some of my friends/mentees/mentors, and ended up in a solid journal.
Great outcome for the team 💪🏼💪🏼
A true testament of
1/3 My 48th manuscript was accepted for publication! Crazy. I started doing

with no experience in October 2016. To be where I am 4 years later is humbling and mind blowing. I am very excited to get to 50 and have some great stuff in the pipeline!
Last case with my favorite scrub tech before she starts her new gig as a rep!
Ortho is great, but when you add awesome team members to the equation there literally isn’t a better job on this planet.
