In my first year of my PhD, my boss said that he loved the recrystallisation of elemental sulfur because "it's easy and beautiful. It makes you feel like a brilliant chemist". He wasn't wrong. I do love recrystallising sulfur

I absolutely love this photo. The two isolated compound have exactly the same functionality - except for one double bond. The one on the right is acenapthene derived (no double bond) and the one on the left is acenaphthylene derived (with the double bond)

Seeing Joe Hart pulling people into the huddle there and nodding to CalMac’s words. That, right there, is what we needed someone who pulls it together. A leader.

This is an amazing thread. Perfect balance between real life uses and chemistry. I remember being lectured by

Husband is on intravenous Relenza (

I'm British. I pay fuck all after going to the doctor's/any operations. This is what society is like. All for one and one for all. No man left behind. I'm will to pay my share and hope I never have to use it.
The figures show an expanded MFA will save the average American $3000

My sister l, Roisin, was vaccinated this afternoon! When I went home for Christmas Roisin didn't hug me. It was quite surreal, I normally get a boa constrictor hug off of her whenever I go back to Leeds. Last year it was a fist bump and hand sanitizer...

This week I lost a friend and mentor. Prof. Paul A. Clarke was an outstanding organic chemist and his control of stereochemistry was phenomenal.
He lived life to the fullest, discovering science and travelling. A wonderful storyteller, he loved to make people laugh.
Having one of your former lecturers saying you did a great job teaching them!? 😅 Thanks for attending
@professor_dave
I really enjoyed presenting to

Nothing more satisfying than teaching
@OrganicBhoy
as an undergraduate
@ChemistryatYork
, seeing him go away to Birmingham for a successful PhD, then him coming back to postdoc in

, and having him teach me (brilliantly) all about his PhD research.
Popped into a pub in York.
Bouncer 1: ID please mate

Bouncer 2: mate he’s got grey flecks in his hair
Me: Oi! I hope not!
Is this the beginning of my decline??
If HS2 started at Manchester, it would have been built all the way down to London.
It’s always about London. The government doesn’t care about northern England. All hot air about “levelling up”. It takes 1.75 hours to get from Leeds to Manchester.
BREAKING: Rishi Sunak set to confirm he is scrapping the Northern leg of HS2 to Manchester at the Tory party conference in the city - very tricky optics for government

Happy birthday to my wee sister, Roisin! Every Sunday I’d call her in Birmingham during my PhD. With the glint in her eye and her customary cup of tea (or half a Guinness!), she brings joy to those around her.
Yep, you can tell my family are Irish from our names 🍀🎉🎂
This wee one is 24 years old today.
It hasn’t always been easy for her (or us) but what a blessing she has been.
Huge credit to her mum whose patience and dedication has managed to get Roisin to this part of her life where semi-independent living is a near reality.

What you don’t realise when you’re a postdoc is that you’re also partly a lab engineer. You’ll be fixing rotary evaporators, balances, combiflashes etc. A little “the balance is playing up, can you have a look at it?” from a student here and there.
I love it.
Alexandra Elbakyan is the founder of sci-hub. She is a Kazakhstani computer programmer and in 2016 was voted one of the most important people in science by Nature (ironically a journal you have to pay for)...
Avtar was my interviewer for my undergrad place at York and then he went on to teach me substitution and elimination in organic chemistry. Cracking lecturer! Congratulations!!

That to me is a phthalate diester. Almost certainly from a squeezy bottle of a chlorinated solvent. During my PhD I columned this out and got full characterisation by NMR. I showed my supervisor and him saying well done on isolating it so clean - but it’s just an impurity 😂

Foreign PDRAs not welcome in the UK now essentially. Starting salary for most PDRAs (if it’s your first one) is ~£35k.
We will not be able to compete with the rest of the world in science without top class PDRAs from around the world

I'm a scientist and in my first year at uni I was assigned to the "Curie college". I read up on her work... Apart from being a boss scientist she is a sensational person and a record breaking human. Since then she had been an idol of mine. 2 Nobel prizes in 2 sciences!?
I cooked my family dinner the other night - Satay chicken with pak choi, shiitake mushrooms and orange peppers.
