There is a whisper campaign that we're getting raises. We also heard we had already gotten raises. The chattering class is chattering.
Don't listen to anything about our pay until you hear it from us.
Noisy Creek bought us, promised more resources, but refused an interim agreement to raise unit wages. Now they want to hire a new reporter for more than they pay current staff. If the company can't afford to pay workers a wage we can thrive on, we can't afford new reporters.

Index Media has officially recognized our union!
Our members showed serious solidarity over the last two week as we negotiated for our bargaining unit.
After several pointed emails, we came to an agreement with management.

Salaries at
@TheStranger
,
@portlandmercury
, Everout, and Bold Type Tickets are even lower than this. Most of our unit makes less than $65k. The workers at
@CascadePBSUnion
deserve better, and so do we.
Cascade PBS says its “vision is to be the most essential and relevant media organization in the region.” Hate to break it to you,
@CascadePBS
, but that costs $. How do you expect to do that when you’re so behind the curve on compensating journalists? (1/3)

Today, the workers at Noisy Union will bargain for our first ever contract. We've written the story of the bad boss over and over again --- let's not live it!
Seattle this week:
✅ SODA/SOAP, loitering legislation
✅ alt ballot initiative to compete w/ i-137, opting to defund affordable housing instead of taxing corporations
✅ Lynch mob attacks Black activist
✅ City to incarcerate more ppl for misdemeanors
What else did I miss? 😵💫
We’ve built a reputation on eating the rich and standing up for progressive values. We're asking Index Media to embody those values through voluntary recognition.
Index Media workers are deeply invested in our work, but we face uncertainty, ever-growing responsibilities, and wages far below those of our industry competitors.
Thank you all for the support. Glad to be joining the ranks of
@PacNWGuild
We look forward to getting to the bargaining table to build a better Index Media for all workers as we fight for four work days, 20 hours a week, $69 an hour.
Seattle DSA fully support many of our favorite local journalists and media workers in their fight to get union recognition! Keep an eye on our blog to see our Labor Working Group's in-depth take. This should be a no-brainer for Index Media!

Thank you all for the support and the love. If you want to be extra kind and show some $$$ affection for our cause, contribute to

and write a little note encouraging our bosses to voluntarily recognize us.
NEW: Cherry Street Coffee House owner complained to City Council that paying minimum wage may force him to close stores. Outraged, the workers shut down one of his stores anyway. Business may have power in City Hall, but workers still run the workplace.
@NoisyUnion
(at The Stranger) and
@CascadePBSUnion
are newsrooms with reporters and media staff keeping us all informed.
They should be able to afford to live comfortably in the cities they cover.
Follow them on social media, and amplify their fights for fair pay.

The work of journalists is crucial to our democracy. Having a voice in how that work is done is just as important. Congrats to the workers at Index Media for forming their union!
Today, the
@CascadePBSUnion
sits down at the bargaining table with
@CascadePBS
to begin negotiating a new contract. We’re looking forward to good faith conversations with the company in the coming weeks (and to making a living wage in 2024). 🧵
