Welcome to my personal page. Dr Nik Johnson, Mayor of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough. NHS doctor. Passionate about compassion, community and co-operation.
#24hoursinpolicecustody
I’ll put it on record how proud I was of our team at Hinchingbrooke hospital that night . It was an incredibly difficult clinical situation with hugely emotional sensitivities
That night will never be forgotten and neither will Teddie
RIP Teddie
Beautiful sunny Saturday to show off the best of Cambridge to
@AndyBurnhamGM
. We had a lovely time reminiscing on his old university stomping ground and taking a tour of the local
#publictransport
and
#activetravel
options available across the city. Watch:
'Harold Wilson famously said a week is a long time in politics - but my first week as Mayor has been all too short.'

Not a single junior doctor will have taken the decision for industrial action lightly-Their campaign is for pay restoration-but at heart of the problem is a decade of severe underinvestment. This is, fundamentally, a call to save the NHS for us all.Full support to you
@TheBMA
One of the best pieces of advice I’ve ever been given
Works as a doctor and as the Mayor .
Seems very apt in the circumstances
“ Always speak from the heart “
Thank you for all your kind words and thoughts
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority
Deputy Mayor to cover at the Combined Authority as Mayor, Dr Nik Johnson takes a leave of absence for on-going medical treatment. We all wish Dr Nik Johnson a speedy recovery and look forward to welcoming him back when he is recovered.
I’ve been thinking hard about what I’ve been calling ‘Open for Business’ Day on Monday 19 July. There’s no doubt that easing of restrictions will be a great relief to our businesses; I’m very aware of how difficult the last year has been for the regional economy.
Had to wait till the final song to make “ The Great Leap Forward “ but
@billybragg
delivered long before that with his plea for compassion and empathy with a message for today “ I will be your shield “ . After all these years never fails to deliver in Cambridge tonight
I want improved rail connectivity across Greater Cambridgeshire.
@CambsPboroCA
working with
@NetworkRailAng
on new Soham and Camb South stations and better Fenland rail services. I’ll keep up the good work with the new Great British Railways.
So I’m pretty sure this does not happen often - Kings College Inviting grateful visitors , tourists , locals to sit on the grass . Possibly helping the effort to keep up social distancing but a lovely thing to see....
Always a special day when Nick Cave joins the conversation whilst talking to the lovely Rowan Williams - the previous Archbishop of Canterbury - going through security ?
amazing day and proud to represent the Wonderful people of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough Combined Authority
Any success was only due to the huge work and support from you Nigel along the way and all the labour family in Huntingdon- they know who they are - couldn’t have done it without my family and their belief in 3Cs as well
End of my first day back - official communications going out over next 24 hours - glad to be able to ease back in with the ever welcoming , always smiling

Great news for young people in
@CambsPboroCA
area .Today I am launching the Tiger bus pass, offering bus fares for just £1 for those under 25
Tiger bus pass is free of charge and designed to make public transport more affordable for young people
Delighted to have opened the NHS Covid vaccination centre at Boots Huntingdon today- a semi permanent fixture finishing the National vaccination programme.
Thank you to all the team, I appreciated the chance to meet all and to cut my first ribbon.
#Vaccinations
#ThankyouNHS
We have come a long way Paul - you the Sinnerman and me now a Mayor - but at heart always George’s medics - it’s where I learnt the 3Cs - compassion, cooperation and community
Never been brave enough to go punting but a canoe and a paddle on the Cam can still be a classic day out in Cambridgeshire - Hope everyone has been enjoying the half term break and getting out in the sun .
Congratulations
@AndyBurnhamGM
! Thanks for the trailblazing. Fast on heals
@CambsPboroCA
-powering down our own bus lane of reform ,Independent Audit agreed this week,Bus Operators forum last week with full agreement to work for the best outcomes for all
A letter from No 10 in my in-tray. It’s really heartening to see that the PM
@BorisJohnson
is as committed to cooperation as I am. Now we can work on compassion and working for all in the community.
Thoughts with everyone affected by last night’s A47 crash, especially the Littleport family
who have lost a loved 18yr-old at the very start of her adult life.
A fantastic and positive day for
@CambsPboroCA
and on a personal note a real honour to be in Downing Street with all the UK mayors meeting the Prime minister
Always a good day
@Hinchingbrooke
@NWAnglia
when you welcome back identical twins born prematurely and 15 years ago - to discover they are bigger than you and are interested in doing medicine
All the best for the future girls - there are no limits to your ambition!!
1/ I have been touched by the images of desperation coming from Afghanistan over the last week and whilst the Combined Authority has no authority over resettlement for Afghan refugees there are things we can do to proactively support the call of resettlement.
Great to spend time with Darren Roe, Managing Director of
@Stagecoach_East
today, working co-operatively to improve public transport around the region.
@johnelworthy
@MayorJPalmer
Currently a case of physican heal thyself with slow breathing to slow the tachycardia.....Pulse is higher than normal John . Thanks for asking
My reply-Big steps for Combined Authority at Wednesday Board+important decisions for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough.
But big story?Cllr Wayne Fitzgerald’s surprise u-turn and the impact of last-minute backtracking on strategic transport matters.
All the best for the weekend
A polling station, a doctor and a defibrillator....
Voted - now to jump start the future of Greater Cambridgeshire
- others can provide a different headline
#COP26
here I come! 🛤️ Last time I was here was to catch an overnight sleeper to Fort William for my first wedding anniversary. Great to be travelling by
#train
; looking forward to the journey as well as the destination.
It has been great to attend the launch of the ZEBRA buses for Cambridge in Duxford today. This is a landmark moment for our bus network, and these 30 electric vehicles are marking a turning point for public transport in our region
Downing Street tomorrow at 7 am - Metro Mayors front and centre of Keir Starmers new Labour UK Government- talking to
@chrismannbbc
on BBC Cambridgeshire at 11.00am today . Feeling very positive about the future and looking forward to working with all new

While the legal requirement to wear a mask has been lifted, I ask everyone who is able to continue to wear a mask on our buses and trains, and in public spaces.

@AidanVdeW
Thank you Aidan - the 3Cs of compassion, cooperation and community will be at the heart of all our work across Greater Cambridgeshire and yes I too look forward to working with you and all political parties - we are a Combined Authority for all
Proud to have been involved in bringing 30 new electric buses to Cambridge. As a doctor, I want to see healthier
#airquality
and
#zeroemission
buses have proven to have an immediate impact.
Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Combined Authority
This is what should underpin every public policy decision -
@MichaelMarmot
‘s work is essential reading for all , and both inspired and changed the way I saw how to do better politics- inspired the 3 Cs - compassion, cooperation and community
This magisterial piece makes me wonder: is "cost of living crisis" strong enough to describe what is happening in the UK? Are we instead at risk of, as
@MichaelMarmot
calls it, "a humanitarian calamity in one of the richest countries in the world"?
Mayor for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough claims 2022 record -biggest UK land based height differential in a week wearing his St Neots colours .

Any challengers?
A little Mayoral diversion today Shippea Hill train station here in Cambridgeshire - a previous holder of the least-used railway station in 2014/15 (with 22 passengers) and 2015/16 (12 passengers). 2018/19 - a positive bustling 432 - hidden gem Cambs
Using the car is currently the only option for residents in many of our rural communities. I want to be able to offer the people of Cambs and Peterborough a connected public transport service. That work starts here with the introduction of this six-month trial in West Hunts.
To keep our businesses open, and avoid more lockdowns, I will wear a mask. On public transport, I will wear a mask. To keep my colleagues and patients safe, I will wear a mask. I ask you all to join me.
Congratulations to everyone involved in the successful construction of

@greateranglia
It was an honour to open the new station today, which has created lasting value for this community and its future generations.
100 days since being officially inaugurated as Mayor.. 🤯
It's been a wonderful beginning to my administration. I have learnt so much from the people I have met; I'm excited about the future, and how we at the Combined Authority can deliver and truly make a positive impact..
Not the best night to be waiting for the bus but to be fair a warm bus and friendly driver on the
@GoWhippet

gets me to St Neots on time - 1 less car journey , good value £2 and tonight I can have a drink . Yes there remain huge challenges but it changes one journey at a time
Learnt a huge amount from
@RNIB
and local residents . Hugely humbling to hear testimony from local residents of their lived experiences with visual impairment .
#SaveOurTicketOffices
Thanks so much to
@NikJohnsonCA
for visiting Ely train station today to meet campaigners.
They explained to Dr Johnson why it's important that ticket offices stay open, and showed how inaccessible ticket machines are for blind and partially sighted people.
@BethRigby
@BethRigby
glad you’ve picked up on this . It’s evidence of sequential change here in Cambridgeshire - we’re doing things differently -3Cs - compassion, cooperation and community. Come and visit - a warm Metro Mayor welcome awaits
Launching the Mayoral campaign in St Neots at the Farmers Market in the sun today.
bit rough about the edges and definitely need a haircut. ( St Neots - a good place to get a cut if they weren’t all shut )
smiling but good to discuss the campaign for Mayoral elections
Cambridge- an amazing city in an amazing county . Any future plans for economic development have to include the meaningful voice of all the communities across the whole area .
@CambsPboroCA
we are currently reviewing the announcements made by Michael Gove this morning
A stunning result in North West Cambridgeshire as
@sam_carling_
unseats
@ShaileshVara
by just 39 votes. At 22, Sam will be one of the youngest MPs in the new Parliament, if not the youngest.
To those willing to stand and take part in democratic process -my respect . Successful or not - that you were willing to take the plunge ,for first time or re-election, you held up a democratic process hard won which is an intrinsic value of civility and civic pride
#Together
Last week I met with former Home Secretary Charles Clarke for a fantastic discussion about
#education
; it was great to receive such a warm welcome from him, and to talk about his experience and advice.
Government backtracks and our ticket offices have been saved - Really really good news -
a win for the community ,
a win for campaigning ,
a win for the Metro Mayors -
the power of speaking together
Wishing
@LabourAlexB
all the very best for tonight’s hustings at
#Huntingdon
Town Hall . On home turf tonight - A local resident- lives 2 minutes from the venue! - A fantastic opportunity to see just how good a local MP she will be for the community.
Grab-a-jab - CoVid vaccination walk in clinic at POSH stadium, London Road . Down the town centre drumming up business , not every day you get on a bus and drive into the middle of Peterborough
As Mayor of Cambridgeshire & Peterborough, I stand with
@SadiqKhan
and
@AndyBurnhamGM
in their encouragement to continue to wear masks on public transport and in crowded places. I ask everyone who is able to continue to wear a mask on our buses and trains, and in public spaces.
Great catch up with
@AndyBurnhamGM
whilst up in his neck of the woods yesterday. Very useful chat about public transport,
#cooperation
between the authorities and of course... football.
Thank you to the thousands of unpaid

I will stand with the NHS and I stand for the 3 Cs of compassion, cooperation and community
Compassion will always win but we need the cooperation of our communities.
would be grateful if
@metpoliceuk
could please investigate.
Please RT if you agree.
Conspiracy theorist, anti-vaxxer and struck-off nurse Kate Shemirani is here literally threatening NHS doctors with the noose.
I believe she is inciting hatred and would be grateful
@metpoliceuk
if you could please investigate.
Please RT if you agree.
Now outside Key Theatre- Whistle stop tour of Peterborough- leafleting comes easy when you’ve been out campaigning before - Fantastic to be doing it to help push up the CoVid first and second vaccination rates

“ For what is Chatteris “ - go and have a listen who will not be disappointed
Delighted to meet with the new Director of Public Health for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, Jyoti Atri this afternoon. I shared my ambitions for public health to be at the cornerstone of my administration and I hope to work closely with her to make this happen.
Fascinated and humbled to visit

Very best of luck to all those Cambridgeshire and Peterborough students picking up A-level results today and GCSE results Thursday. Covid has brought huge uncertainty and stress at such an important time for young lives. (1/3)
