9 years ago today I arrived in the UK. I was 18, did not speak English very well & started university. Last year I finished a PhD, got British citizenship & this year I became the first Romanian born County Councillor. What a difference almost a decade makes! #MigrantStories

So I posted a 15 second TikTok video saying I am the first Romanian Labour County Councillor. Woke up with it getting over 55,000 views and over 600 comments, at least 200 racists and xenophobic comments, including one who said they’ll complain officially to Labour. Go on mate.

Dear @michaelgove , I applied for settled status because I had to. It is very simple: if I did not apply, this Government would have made me unlawfully resident in the UK and I would have lost my job and home. Please stop pretending we liked applying to stay in our home.

Countless times I knock on doors and ask if someone is registered to vote and they say "No, I'm not British". In England, British, Irish, Commonwealth & EU citizens can vote in the local elections on 5 May. Please share. I also did not know I can vote when I came to the UK.

On my 24th bday I got a rejection letter for my permanent residence. But I didn’t have to “go back”, got settled status later & became British. But that moment is what got me involved in politics, opposing the hostile environment & “dreams” like this:

I wonder when the Government will realise that migration isn’t a “tap” (to use Patel’s phrase) we can “turn on and off” as we please. People need rights for the UK to be an attractive option. People need to want to come.

I have British-Romanian dual citizenship. Hilarious how some comments tell me I am not "really British" questioning whether I have a British passport, while others say I am not "really Romanian". You cannot win either side. Folks, it is not a debate, it is fact, on paper.

All that higher salary thresholds do is to ignore skills shortages, prevent migrants’ family reunion rights and reduce migrants’ existence to a narrow economic lens. It’s as if people in Government don’t know how much the average person, even in highly qualified jobs, earn.

I am tired of being lectured by people who have no lived experience of migration or helping migrants. I sleep very little so I can help more people. I spoke to 100s if not thousands of people about their rights. I spoke to people today who have not applied. Have some empathy.

That’s me 11 years ago today, I was 18 & moved to the UK from Romania. Could not have imagined that I’ll get a PhD, become a local councillor, a British citizen, co-found @MigrantDemos & spend so much time on buses 😂 Things that are worth doing are almost always challenging.

I honestly had enough of justifying my existence to people whose only “advantage” is literally randomly be born in another country than me. Why cannot we treat each other as equal residents in local communities. The world would be a better place.

Let’s get one fact right as people seemed confused: EU citizens did not have 5 years to “fill in the form”, the scheme was open to the public in March 2019. Having a pandemic half this time did not help people who could not renew their IDs or who needed face to face support.

I am not a stranger to racist and xenophobic comments, but the volume of it is huge. I sometimes wonder if a British citizen became a Councillor in Romania whether they will get the same reaction on social media. Oh well. Will do some fun troll replies later.

Me at 18, about to come to the UK: At 27, I’ll have 3 kids, a 5 bedroom house and eat out every day Me at 27, in the UK: At 37, maybe I’ll afford childcare, I will never own a house in Cambridge and I’ll continue to shop at Tescos, but hey, I have a PhD & I’m a Councillor
