I’m nearly 35, married, and last night my mom called to ask if I have a plan should I get pregnant. I don’t live in Texas, I live in Ohio. She remembers before Roe. She knows what’s coming. We all do. It’s horrific.
@TheTattooedProf
I just gave an exam and told students I can’t stop them from using books or anything, but if they use an outside source, I expect it to be properly cited. And you know what? They all cited what they used. I’m fine with this. Learning doesn’t mean memorization
Let’s teach waitlisted students to ask dept chairs for more sections to be opened instead of asking their contingent faculty to let more students into a capped course.
Dear job applications: please stop asking for a resume/CV and then make me manually put in all of my work experience in. You're not reading it anyways.
My email is not filled with rejections. My email is filled with notifications of cancelled searches. Don’t tell me how “it’s always been a bad market.” It went from “slim chance” to “no chance” at a job in....days.

Hi. I bet you 100% of people have succeeded despite the shitty women. It’s not that these women “don’t like” others, it’s their behaviors. Also: just scroll by if you don’t agree with something, that’s cool too.
Today I had an article accepted for publication, and it's the first based on my dissertation. The reviewer had the kindest words regarding how I addressed their suggested revisions. This is how peer review should be.

Whether or not you like it, abortion is deeply rooted in history, American and not. Pre-industrial societies have ALWAYS practiced abortion.
Criminalizing abortion restricts access to SAFE medical care. Women and girls will die. How's that for

Department chair: "Can you teach this one class in the Fall?" Me: "I am unable to accept anything less than FT work in the Fall." It felt nice to tell him that.
#HireMe
It may not be 75 articles, but why can’t we ever talk about what it takes to sit on the market for multiple years? There’s sacrifices to be made to keep searching for the FT and TT faculty position. Why keep publishing if there’s just no real return?
Gave every single extension I could, yet I still have 2 students asking to pass despite it taking them a month to reply to emails. I hate to do it but I have to- I can’t accept your 2 month over due midterm 4 hours before grading is due.
I had a guest speaker start to mansplain women’s history to me in my First Year Seminar today but a male student in the front row stopped him with a hearty “hey you do know she also teaches women’s history,right?” It was great.
12 yo said she no longer wants to be a WWII historian bc there aren’t jobs and the ones historians do get don’t pay. Simultaneously proud and offended. She’s not wrong.
I have my first deaf student and interpreters joining class this summer- I’m excited! Any tips for making activities inclusive? I want summer to be EXTRA awesome for ALL of my students.
SO EXCITED to announce that in the New Year, I will be joining the team at
@Wondrium
as an Academic Recruiter. I'll be around in academia, just in a different way!

I'm super excited for this amazing opportunity!
I gave in and ordered my full regalia. No grad ceremony or TT job for me, but an important keepsake (though it took multiple family
@members
convincing me that it’s worth doing)
Journal article published and I was sent hard copies. I showed it to kiddo and she gave me a big hug and said "YOURE FAMOUS!!!" She's far more excited than I am, but I'll take the hug. Totally worth that.

Hybrid classes are not new. What you mean to say is that as a TT prof, you're upset that you're forced to now teach in the less than ideal teaching model that adjuncts have been paid pennies FOR YEARS to teach. There, I said it.
I'm going to piggyback on Dr.
@skwithycombe
and do a short thread about how our beloved "natural" childbirth is based on "primitive" culture's birthing ideas. 1/
But white, “modern” women? The narrative claims they’ve lost touch with those “ancient” roots and need all the help they can get, and they should get it. Medical, economic, and political aid has primarily benefited white mothers and their babies. 21/
My dad is 80. Has emphysema, diabetes, and Lewy body dementia. He’s on oxygen on a good day. My step mom just texted me he has COVID and is in the hospital.
I earned my MA online, and all you haters looked down on it. But now that you have to teach online, suddenly online classes can be rigorous and good in their own way? Mmmkk.
@oldenoughtosay
My neighborhood (on a mountain, everyone has acreage), had 5 airBnBs and the HOA used community funds to get a lawyer to handle the problem (they forced the former owner of my house out). The anger at meetings about Air BnB makes me LOL every time
I watched my kid nearly not survive birth, then watched her stop breathing multiple times, and lived in the hospital for 92 days with her. I’ve been to hell and back ensuring that kid is healthy. You do not get to sacrifice her on the altar of the economy. Fuck all the way off.
I got a PhD so that I could write the book I needed when I was 21 and pregnant. Every time I sit down to write, I get scared. What if it's not good enough. What if it's not what I planned. What if I cant get the words out. What if.
I just emailed my dissertation to my committee. I hope the formatting goes through okay (sometimes it converts incorrectly from Mac to Windows). Cross your fingers, and let's schedule!!!

I have one particular student who is an exceptionally good head nodder via zoom- I took the time to email them and say THANK YOU, YOU THE REAL MVP. Body language means EVEN MORE via Zoom.

It’s almost like I’m not acutely aware of my fertility Bc my mom taught me the SCIENCE behind MY body, but like I’ve never Timed a conception. Grrr
Wanting to revamp my medical humanities course- what is your favorite bio/memoir about anything health related, including about being a health professional? Yes. This is a broad request. Thanks!
Husband thinks I have some ridiculous fears. I am irrationally afraid of instapots and very fast ceiling fans.
What are some of your quirky fears? Tell me I'm not alone!
@moorehn
I had to restock some things this week, got fish, peanut butter and coffee, checked stores for deals, and still spent $170 for this weeks meals for our family of 3
Pleased to announce that I've accepted a new job as SCIENCE WRITER at

!!!! I'm so excited to take my skills as a historian of medicine to a team that is working hard to make important research accessible to the communities it impacts.
I was so nervous to bring Kid to the conference...but that all went away when we were warmly welcomed by fabulous people. I hope you each know how much it means to us/me, because without that kind of support, I wouldn’t make it through all this.

Saw a video that said we should give veterans a purpose again and put them in front of schools. No. Veterans have a purpose, and it’s to live their lives. They didn’t see the depths of hell to come home and make schools war zones. Guns are the problem; adding more isn’t helping.
I made my husband an eye appt. They called for insurance info. The lady was confused that I hold the policy and my husband is a dependent on my account. This is consistently annoying.
My brother graduated with his BA yesterday- he started before 9/11. He’s had 6 kids, an entire army career deployed away to places I can’t tell you, and a whole bunch of other obstacles—But he did it.
Random act of kindness for the week: pick 3 students in each class to send an unprompted, supportive or encouraging email. Students need it just as much as we do. (Do a different 3 another week!)
#Twitterstorians
It's only week one and I've already heard "wow, I've never had a professor care like you do" MANY TIMES. WTAF is going on that students are blown away by basic understanding and kindness?
I hesitate to say this, but whatever, I’m excited. Kiddo got into her top choice private school for next academic year and I AM SO SO PROUD. This girl works so hard and had overcome so much more than she even recognizes.
Today I got ^actually fully dressed^ and have a final interview. I'd which is the bigger deal: I'm wearing hard pants and make up, or having a third round interview!
Stop telling PHD candidates to “take a year and publish” after defending. It’s intensely privileged to be able to “just take any job” and “just spend a year focused on publishing.” Thanks for coming to my Ted Talk.

Alright, reusing my women’s studies syllabus for the summer. The world is on fire and I need to arm these students with the knowledge to battle. What are your favorite readings related to women’s issues? Any and all!

“Thanks for your application to our school. We’ve reviewed your application, and your PhD and ten years teaching experience just isn’t a good fit to teach here at our small school. We hope you find a suitable position.” Seriously, Chad, just say it. 🙄🙄
Stop saying that graduate students need to be aware of "non-ac" or "alt-ac" career possibilities.
Graduate students need to be aware of different career paths, period.
Calling it "alt-ac" doesn't help anyone.

, unite! Please cross your fingers and send good vibes for tomorrow. I really, really hope to be able to give you all good news in the coming weeks!
There is NO REASON that short term fellowships, or really any research fellowship, should REQUIRE residency. Let me come for a couple days a week, or a few days when I can. People have families, kids, responsibilities and cannot just leave for months.
