A student of mine just completed an oral presentation on Kool G Rap’s lyrical narratives about the Luciano family and how they play into voyeuristic notions of Black and Italian masculinity as sold by corporate media organizations. 🤯
Happy to announce I’ve just accepted a Assistant Professor position at
@uofsc
in The School of Journalism and Mass Communication (
@uofsc_sjmc
@uofsc_cic
) focusing on Race and Media. 🍾
Jay-Z will have more millenials Googling and researching gentrification/real estate than ever before. The same way he had us thinking about starting familes in 2014, buying art in 2010, wearing button-ups in 2004, drinking Belvedere in 2001 and renting Range Rovers in 1998.
If you bring a bottle to the BBQ function but nobody cracks it open. Does possession revert back to the attendee or does the homeowner retain possession for use at a future function per BBQ Statute Code 54:4-9 ?
So excited to finally let people see what we've been working on. My FIRST producer credit combining two of the my favorite things in the world: hip-hop and the White Sox!
The goal was a rebrand, the outcome was iconic.
Fueled by hip-hop, the Sox ball cap is now a staple of music and fashion history.
COMING SOON: Fitted in Black |

I guess my thought is it hits harder as academia is holding on to ghosts that loom larger. There’s a widely accepted belief that Black ppl are just better at sports and entertainment and there’s no compensatory offering in academia besides hiring us to do DEI or AfAm Studies.
@ToiWeezy
I think this is where I realize social media should have a kiddie table. People in our cohort end up reading stuff that has less experience attached to it.
Just had a lovely conversation with a young woman on the T who told me that she listened to my music all the way through college and is now a graduate student at MIT. People really don’t understand how much moments like that mean to me.
Couldn’t have been more proud of the success of
@VicMensa
and
@chancetherapper
before, but this event in 🇬🇭 has me totally in admiration of their evolution into building unity for young Black folks within the diaspora.
Sitting
@MIT
watching
@LupeFiasco
teach about Homeboy Sandman is full circle to me. We went to
@Penn
together and spent many nights making records with
@godouble0
… the amount of talent we had in that apartment is mind boggling.
In many ways I am glad that Cam’ron and Mase brought OJ Simpson back into the zeitgeist and allowed him a bit of an outlet to remind us of how great of an athlete, personality and sports mind he truly was prior to the trial of the century.
Harvard owes me nothing.
It’s been an amazing experience to live and work in academic Hollywood. It is my hope that the relationships I have forged between myself and others will continue to grow and evolve over years as a potential faculty associate
@bkcharvard
.
“Black Twitter is like the Black dorm at a PWI – It has its own experiences, practices and discourse that support Black unity, but it operates and is sanctioned by a larger institution that is not necessarily structured to the best interests of Blk ppl.”
So, there’s a very interesting conflict between narratives occurring between music writers talking about hip-hop right now. On the one hand it’s “the ladies are most dominant and impactful” and on the other hand there’s “very soon rap wont be the most important genre anymore.”
Black girls aren't magic. Magic is an illusion.
Black women are leaders of men.
Black women are tech geniuses.
Black women are peacemakers.
Black women are engineers of society.
Black women can hold our attention without twerking.
Black women are weapons. G'nite.

Just found out I was awarded a Graduate Dissertation Award by the
@NU_SoC
. Loads of hard work went into it over the last two years so I am happy the work was received well by my peers and our faculty members.
@stargazerseye
I sent a private email telling her how much I was proud at her researching abilities and that it was uncharacteristic of a any undergrad student I have had in this particular course.
As an artist, being your own vendor means setting the price, controlling access, and keeping the lion’s share of the profits. As
@Yoh31
writes, it’s the modern equivalent of selling CDs out the trunk.
So I have had the blessing of being at
@UofSC
and collaborating with some amazing students to start a podcast with
@garnetmediagroup
. It will showcase conversations with journalists, scholars and media makers about all things Black folk in the creative industries. Stay tuned.
My Hip-Hop class this semester has been a dud. These students have some of the worst body language ever. It's hard to remain so excited about something while looking at a crowd of students moping.
Help my son to shine at The Art Institute of Chicago's summer art program. Please donate and share this cause. Every contribution matters. Thank you for being a part of his journey.
I’m going to start unfollowing bitter academics. I’ve chosen this path and you’re not helping me get where I need to go. Bless you on leaving it but there are people who also win. And they have joy within it…I need that algorithm.
@juttinthacut
True. Most Chicagoans move for career and weather but generally would prefer to stay if opportunity presents itself. That's the next best thing...
I defended and got three job offers in the last two months... during a global pandemic... I got rejected for at least 15 jobs last year, one of which was in my own hometown. Mentors helped me, panels helped me, conferences helped me....my family helped me... now I’m here. 🙏🏾
@fakeshoredrive
Hard to call him a bust...but....
Bump J was supposed to be our 50 cent
Some have called me a bust and I can't necessarily argue if you expected me to be Common by now...lol
Happy
@itsthereal
is documenting the story of the Blog Era through podcast. Salty they talked to 150 ppl that aren’t me. Lol…I think I have a legitimate claim.
I’m going to tell you something that will probably get me skewered on here…. I haven’t listened to a Beyonce album in its entirety in at least 15 years.
@JulissaMuniz13
It has probably been said before but makes sure you ask questions of them about their support for you that are just as thoughtful as the answers you give to them. You need to want to be there not just win the position. You are the prize.
If you’re under 50, calling yourself a Hip-Hop scholar and you have never a) performed at a open mic (in any capacity), b) written and performed 16 bars in a studio, c) DJ’d a party with vinyl or d) had a graffiti name… I’m very skeptical of you.
Me and
@Dee1music
earlier today at
@BKCHarvard
. This year’s Nas fellows are amazing but Dee is truly a special arbiter of the culture. Collaboration(s) soon come.
@theblogera
not too many ppl remember this mixtape (Will Rap for Food) or the fact that I was originally signed as a solo act by
@John_Monopoly
and
@hustleperiod
and his Hustle Period company before Rawkus came in.
It’s really funny how life works. As a child, it was always my dream to be a sports journalist. Now that I am actually teaching in a journalism school, I may actually get the opportunity to talk about sports every week as a part of my job. This could get very interesting.
If Hip-Hop really is my generation's jazz, I'll be able to sit in college classrooms for the rest of my life and tell stories about my interactions/collaboration with the masters of the art.
I had a feature done on me in high school for my baseball career and they asked me why I left De La Salle for Luther South. In the article, I said I didn’t like the all-boys setting. In reality, I hated the racism. I feel cowardly for not being honest when I had the platform.
Thank you to
@imLeor
for letting me share about my journey in becoming a media scholar. 🙏🏾 It’s the first real press I’ve done since starting my PhD.
Copy editing the article I have with
@nancybaym
and realizing that the 3 years it took to finish are actually worth the investment. It will be cited for at least 30.
@LuchiTheDesignr
I don’t know if this thread is more about being men poor or men finessing women into awkward situations to see if they can succeed in getting something out of them.
Highland Park is NOT an actual neighborhood of Chicago…But it is the suburb where Michael Jordan lived…and Kevin was left Home Alone. It’s also very far from what anyone from Chicago would consider Chicago. Even, Oak Park gets more love than them…
Happy to be able to announce that I’ll be spending the next school year as a part of the inaugural Rebooting Social Media cohort of visiting scholars at
@BKCHarvard
.
Murray Forman told me that if you study/write about Hip-Hop long enough, you’ll become a historian. Whether history is your discipline or not, you age out of being an expert on what teenagers think is cool and more an almanac of what your own generation felt was cool.
i swear the album excitement window keeps getting shorter and shorter. you used to get a week or so. maybe you'd get a day or two. but now i feel like by the end of release day people have already moved on...
One of my fondest memories of
@DJTIMBUCK2
was him coming to our album release party at SoBS, telling me the DJ sucked and that he would spin the rest of the party for free because I was fam. He then cursed me out for not asking him in the first place. Lol. That's Tim in nutshell.
I’ve been thinking over this idea of self-segregation on social media. I think the Chitlin Circuit and the Negro Leagues do have lessons we can learn from in terms of building an ecosystem around the vastness of Black creativity in digital spaces.
First day of semester memo: Teaching grad students this semester and I am utterly excited to tell them everything I wish I knew as a first year. This may be more of a therapy session for me but they were writing it all down feverishly. Small classes make for the best workshops.
