Today marks the start of a new chapter. After a transformative year at UCSC, I am excited to continue the tenure track journey at the University of California, Los Angeles as an Assistant Professor in the School of Education & Information Studies
@uclaseis
. Years ago my dream…
If you grew up low income, what’s the most middle class thing you do these days? I’ll go first, I get 90 minute massages every few weeks. Somehow getting massages feels like I made it😌
I refuse to normalize the killing of Black youth. Ryan Gainer deserved to live a full life. No amount of trainings can undo the anti-black racist foundations of our police force. Nor are they equipped to address the needs of our community members living with disabilities.
Ryan Gainer was 15, had autism, and was shot and killed by the San Bernardino Sheriff's Department because he was holding a garden tool.
Murdering a 15 year old autistic Black boy, experiencing a crisis, is enraging and another example of a rotten system that must be dismantled.
Your girl’s a PHD CANDIDATE!!!! This muxer...A first gen, teen (single) mom who crossed the border EVERYDAY to go to school with the dream of one day going to college is one step closer to being a DOCTORA!!!!

I’m going going, back back, to Cali Cali…
After 8 years, I am finally heading home! This fall I’m joining the brilliant faculty & students at the University of California, Santa Cruz as a tenure track Assistant Professor of Social Psychology. Profesora Muñiz has arrived🫶🏾(1/4)
Today I defended my dissertation surrounded by so many people I love. I am proud to say that I am a first gen, former teen mom, Black Latina from the borderlands who today earned her PhD! So many years of hard work, but you can now call me Dr. Muñiz💜
Writing a dissertation is HARD. Writing a dissertation during a pandemic is arguably HARDER. My entire dissertation writing experience has taken place during this pandemic. So unless you have something positive, encouraging or supportive to say I don’t want to hear it.
#ThankYou
When I was 16 & pregnant, I couldn’t have imagined the life I have now. Yet here I am, an almost doctor who this fall will be joining the Department of Educational Psychology as a Provost’s Early Career Postdoctoral Fellow
@UTAustin
! To my familia & loved ones, WE DID IT!✨
16 years ago I brought the light of my life into this world. I was only 16 and scared of what life had in store for us. People doubted us, judged us, & said cruel things along the way, but they didn’t know that for you I’d do ANYTHING. Happy 16th Birthday to My Baby Girl💜
After nearly 8 months of patiently waiting, I just found out my first solo-authored manuscript was ACCEPTED WITH MINOR REVISIONS!!! May this be a sign of what 2021 has in store for me! Starting the year off strong!

I’m three weeks into teaching my first class as an Assistant Professor & so far I am loving every minute of it. My students are incredible, they’re engaged, asking thoughtful questions and show up ready to learn. I’m living the life I always wanted for myself, truly a blessing.
I’ve been holding on to some great news in part because I’m still in disbelief...Yesterday, this muxer- first gen, former teen mom, Afro-Latina from the Borderlands was awarded the NAEd/Spencer Dissertation Fellowship!

I received my first two academic job rejections in the past week. I see these moments as redirections. I’m trusting the process and trusting that sooner or later I’ll land the position that’s right for me. Like Dory from Nemo, I’ll just keep swimming through this job market.
I have my first campus visit coming up in a week or so, what’s one thing you wish you would have known or prepared for prior to the visit! All advice or insights are welcomed. Thank you Twitter friends!
I just confirmed my defense date with my committee!This moment feels absolutely surreal. I knew I wanted to pursue a PhD by the time I was 22 and to now be in the final two months of this journey feels like a blessing. After 5.5 years, I can finally see the finish line.

Rather than being consumed by my email all day, I’ve started scheduling 20 min blocks (three times a day) where all I do is answer emails and there’s no turning back. Why didn’t I do this sooner?

I’m on the job market y’all! I turned in my first application earlier this week and I’m prepping to submit more in the coming days, weeks and months. Wish me luck! Navigating the job market is no joke, but I also trust that I’ll land somewhere that’s right for me & my family.
Good news alert: 1) I was selected for the 2020-2021 NYU Arts and Science Faculty First Look program AND 2) the CER Intensive Workshop at UC Berkeley to further develop my ethnographic skill set! Yay for good news in the time of COVID-19!

One of the highlights of

was gathering and breaking bread with these beautiful souls and powerhouse scholars. To think that this is just the beginning of our sisterhood🫶🏾 We’re coming for you tenure.

After a full week of new faculty events and meeting some of my new colleagues at

, I’m feeling hopeful and excited about what’s to come. I can’t wait to meet our students. Cheers to year 1 on the tenure track and the continued beauty of Santa Cruz.

I wish more people knew & understood how much joy & life young people are creating in the most dehumanizing of spaces. I’m cleaning a transcript from a focus group with 4 boys who were incarcerated at the time, & their joy & laughter defies carcerality & their dehumanization.
After two rounds of revisions, our
@JMarshall_Chi
paper “White Kids on the Block: On Race, Identity, and Criminality Among Incarcerated White Youth” was finally ACCEPTED by the
@SRAdolescence
Journal of Research on Adolescence! Can’t wait for this piece to be out in the world!
The UCSC Gaza Solidarity Encampment is up! I saw numerous of my students out there marching, setting up tents, and working security, and I can tell you that it means a lot to them to see us, as faculty, out there in solidarity with them. Show up for Palestine & your students!
Yesterday I celebrated my PhD graduation surrounded by so many people I love,mi familia, friends, femtors & mentors, my heart was on happiness overload. The end of an era, but the beginning of another as Dr. Muñiz! A goal I’ve been working towards for 10+ years finally complete✅
My daughter’s beautiful teacher was the teacher who was killed in Uvalde, TX. Eva (Ms Mireles) taught Gabby in elementary school. She was a beautiful person & dedicated teacher. She believed in Gabby & went above & beyond to teach her as you can see below. There are no words.
Submitted a new manuscript for publication✅ and I’m almost done with the revisions of another manuscript that received an R&R. I’m really out here being a scholar! That shits wild to think about sometimes.
I’m originally from San Ysidro, a small border town along the U.S/Mexico border. I am also a SY High School graduate & first gen high school & college graduate. This summer with your help I’m launching the San Ysidro Rising Scholar Award which will be given to a first gen (1/3)
After successfully defending my dissertation proposal I asked my committee members to take a selfie. This right here is my village! Thank you

To my Latinx community, don’t let the anti-black/ness & racist comments fly this holiday season. If you hear it, address & correct it. It’s the only way to disrupt & dismantle the deep rooted anti-blackness in our communities. We have work to do & it starts with our familias.
Today I presented at the 41st Annual Ethnography Forum at U Penn, had lunch with the brilliant

I turned 31 on the 31st and my family blessed me with a few of my favorite things: handmade charcuterie board courtesy of my kiddo & fiancé, mezcal, flowers, jewelry, and coconut cake. I’m hopeful 31 will be a year of growth, exploration & continued healing✨

I am teaching an College Prep Reading & Writing course through the Texas Prison Education Initiative at a local women’s prison and it has quickly become one of the highlights of my week. My students are brilliant & excited to learn. There’s not better feeling as an educator.
@JamieOQuinn1
Thank you Jamie for sharing. I work with incarcerated youth and too often as I drove away from the detention center I found myself in tears carrying the weight of their experiences, angry at all the adults who didn’t help them. I see and hear what you’re sharing 💜

I recommend doing a postdoc before doing a TT. I may be bias but doing a postdoc 1) helped me regain my love for writing after the diss, 2) allowed me to rest & renourish, & 3) better prepared me for the market. Not just any postdoc, the kind where you can do your own work.
Twitter friends! My colleague & I are excited to announce the launch of our new study focused on Latinx Families in Central Texas & their experiences with law enforcement agencies. We are currently recruiting families so if you know anyone plz share our flyer or Retweet! Gracias!
I’m loving the swag that just arrived in the mail. Thank you

I have so many people 2 thank for their unwavering support & encouragement throughout this process including

@sepehrvakil
, Dave Stovall, & Jim Spillane. Also all my friends and colleagues who read & offered feedback on multiple drafts & mock job talks & cheered me on.
I’ve started to make peace with the fact that my dissertation may not be what I envisioned and planned for all these years. The word ‘’mourning’ keeps coming to mind as I find ways to describe how I feel, but mourning also doesn’t feel right. Either way I’m sad about it.

Having to continuously tell my daughter about the various mass shootings is gut wrenching each and every time. How do we expect our kids to grow up feeling safe in a world where you can’t go to school, groceries stores, churches, movie theaters without the threat of gun violence?
Today I had the great pleasure of being the keynote speaker for the San Ysidro Women’s Club, an organization who 12 years ago awarded me a college scholarship. Afterward I treated myself to a California burrito, it felt fitting. Thank you for having me.

I woke up to the news that another unarmed young Black man, Amir Locke, was shot & killed by the Minnesota PD while he slept under a blanket on the couch. They barged in, no knock & startled him then fatally shot him. When will this end? When will our lives matter?

My heart goes out to the parents and families whose children were violently murdered just hours ago at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas. Our children deserve to be safe and cared for- no parent should have to experience what they’re feeling in this moment. No one is safe.
