Jung is doing mysticism. Lacan is properly mystical (as logic). Mysticism is a product of modernity and a reduction of the Real by locating it to cataphatic fixed affective gnosis. The mystical proper is about structures opening out onto that which disrupt those very structures.

The problem isn't a lack of reading but that modern life demands constant, exhausting reading due to the attention economy. In the humanities, heavy reading should be seen as a way to reclaim our attention and thus a spiritual activity.

Cowardice in academia is funny. Rather than tell people you don’t like their arguments/essays/ whatever, there is just this extremely middle class culture of cliques and ousting via a logic of affirmation. It results in a system where ‘ghosting’ is part of the system.

@JConeNDaZone @ImamBiden @kokoinkorea I see what you are saying but I think the opposite is true. I think we are absolutely ethically obligated to the other, the tragedy of modern life is the saturation of an ideology of selfishness and myopic solipsistic individualism.

@OrwellNGoode It’s just human desire. Read Lacan and Rene Girard. We desire what we can’t have, and when we get what we want, we don’t want it anymore. Moreover, we want others have.

Anglo analytic philosophers will be like ‘I’m going to write a whole work on metaphor and art’ And not mention Lacan, Ricoeur or Kristeva’. The real power of Anglo analytic philosophy comes from the systems and walls it puts up to stop conversation.

@delmonaco_joe @christapeterso Throwing a tantrum over spelling and grammar misses the central issue. Analytic philosophy absolutely seeks to validate itself by closely aligning with science, yet its approach to language is far from scientific. She’s right.

@UTD_Darri @tristehomo A lot of crushes don’t actually have a relation to the other, but merely to an idea of the other. When you do something that shatters the fantasy in the other, all feelings dissipate. It’s what Lacan called the non rapport.

Freudian analysis teaches we are responsible for our desires - insofar that they are our *repressed* desires - while also saying the ego is not master of our house. ‘Responsibility’ not anything like a moralist injunction to repress your feelings more!

We are pattern seeking creatures And we will reach for security, predictability and certainty before we reach for anything remotely resembling life. Psychoanalysis shows us that when it comes to not living, we are masters at convincing ourselves with bullshit.

We often hear that our ‘authentic self’ exists beyond the peculiar quirks, errors, and embarrassing peripheral actions. Psychoanalysis, on the other hand, challenges this idea. It directs our attention to those unsettling moments and asserts, "thou art there; assume your desire.’
