The massive doors of Saint John Lateran are over 2,000 years old. They are so perfectly balanced, it takes only one guy to open and close them. But they are a bit squeaky.
This is an unedited photo I took in the Garden of Gethsemane a few weeks ago and posted this morning. People keep telling me they see the face of Christ.
Here’s a relic you probably don’t know about… Mary’s Veil.
Twice a year, once on the Feast of the Assumption (August 15th) and once on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception (December 8th), the Basilica of Saint Francis in Assisi displays Mary’s veil.
A gift to Mary
Took my group to open the Vatican Museums. Surprised them with my friend Melissa praying the Ave Maria for us in the Sistine Chapel. For any grumps, I had permission, my group was alone, and, like the key holder said, it is a chapel after all. Apologies for the shaky video.
A reminder that today is the one day of the year you can see Veronica’s Veil. Displayed for only 60 seconds following today’s Station Mass in Saint Peter’s Basilica. Arrive by 4 PM if you want a seat.
Welcome to all the new Catholics!!!
This was me the night I became Catholic, 30 years ago.
I wore really baggy clothes, Docs, and a leather tie.
I woke up on Easter Sunday with mono.
Now I live right next to the Vatican and help people explore Catholic Rome.
Today is the feast of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, martyred at Auschwitz when he offered his life for another. This is his chapel at the monastery he founded just outside Warsaw, Poland. I was surprisingly very taken by this chapel. It’s dark, the ceiling is low, the floor is creaky,
Tears in my eyes seeing an Italian procession after all these months. The Carmelite church is in the neighborhood, so they come down our street once a year. Then, usually, there’s a big watermelon party after Mass. Why watermelon? It’s in season and cheap, I guess.
The Dormition, Burial, and Assumption of the Blessed Mother
Tradition says that after Jesus ascended into Heaven, John the Evangelist and the Blessed Mother lived in Ephesus, Turkey.
You can visit the house today.
There’s no question that Mary and John lived here, but there
I went to all four Taylor Swift shows in Paris.
Night one I bought the day of the show and sat in the 8th row in the lower level, right on the diamond. Under €200
Night two I bought 90 minutes before she went on and had VIP floor. €98
Night three was bought a day early and
Pope John Paul II visited the guy who shot him.
Pope Benedict had a private audience with the woman who tackled him (twice).
Pope Francis greets the woman who nearly pulled him over.
Every day people ask me how they can meet the Holy Father...
A first for me. Going into the tiny chapel built over where Saint John the Evangelist was boiled in oil (he wasn’t harmed and so exiled to Greece). I think it’s only open for about 4 minutes a year.
While pagan idol worship is being promoted/tolerated/defended at the Papal Mass going on right now in Saint Peter’s Basilica, this is the scene at Rome’s Traditional Latin Mass. Standing room only, overflowing outside.
Rome is full. Stay home. This is the line for Saint Peter’s Basilica at 7 AM today. The last few months have been getting more and more crowded. Each day busier than I’ve experienced in twenty years. I imagine it will somehow continue to get worse until the end of 2025.
THE CHURCHES OF ROME HAVE REOPENED
Prayers work. Thank you to everyone who stormed heaven these last 17 hours.
Wonder if this is what the Holy Father was referencing in his homily this morning.
Today is the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross. Here is the largest relic of the True Cross. It’s located in Rome at the basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme. Most pilgrimage groups skip this church, you should not.
It may come as a shock to some US bishops, but this is from today’s Latin Mass at my TLM parish here in Rome, where Mass in the Extraordinary Form is still very much allowed under the Bishop of Rome.
I spent the better part of the afternoon at the monastery where Pope Benedict lived for nearly a decade. I got to pray at the foot of his body several times today, at one point for half an hour. Incredible.

For some relics, one needs to ring a bell, knock on a door, or use a secret password/handshake. To venerate the tomb of Saint Catherine, one must walk up to the main altar, go behind it, and then crawl below it. Formerly open only on her feast, it’s been open daily for months.
I’ve attended occasional daily Mass for years. This Christmas I decided to do all I could to make it every single day — there’s really no excuse living in Rome. Today makes 51 in a row. So I thought I’d make it official and share the journey with you. The Tomb of St. Francis.
For those asking, no public Masses means no Mass open to the public. So priests can celebrate, of course. But we will not be able to walk into a church and go to Mass.
No Mass. Until April 3rd. In Rome.
Palm Sunday is April 5th.
UNDERGROUND ROME, let’s do this.
The world’s first carved Nativity Scene. Carved by Arnolfo di Cambio in the late 13th century, shortly after Saint Francis came up with the concept of the nativity in 1223. This nativity is on display in Santa Maria Maggiore in Rome.
It’s the feast of St. Monica. Her tomb is in the church of Sant’Agostino above Piazza Navona in Rome. It’s one of the most requested stops on my pilgrimages. The church is built with travertine from the colosseum, has a Caravaggio, a Raphael, a Bernini, and the Madonna del Parto.
The devil is afraid of Holy Water. Unfortunately, most Holy Water fonts in Rome, like this one in Saint Paul Outside the Walls, have been dry for over two years.
A year ago today I posted this video of the 2,000 year old doors of Saint John Lateran closing.
It’s currently at 86 million views on Facebook, “only” one million views on Instagram.
As always, the comments were super fun 🙄 but the best part was, for some reason, it made
Some more pics of that DJ priest at his day job. Lovely vestments, solid procession, properly using a thurible, sharing ad orientem clips of young vocations.
A moment of heavenly bliss from this morning’s Solemn TLM in Rome — where we are already wearing purple, by the way.
Enjoy and let me know if you’d like more content like this.
A full church today as students from the University of Dallas joined us for Mass. Rome is still closed to most visitors and tourists, but it is possible for approved reasons, including study abroad programs. This is the Divine Mercy Shrine, Santo Spirito in Sassia.
It’s difficult to believe the rest of the article when the opening sentence is a lie.
This is how I see Cardinal Burke most days strolling down my street in Rome.

Such an interesting perspective from last night. If you know the basilica, look at how close the baldacchino and the back wall looks. That’s over two football fields away from the pope!
Today is the Feast of the Chair and Saint Peter gets dressed up for the occasion. If you are in Rome, be sure to visit St. Peter’s Basilica today. If you are not in Rome today, be sure to retweet this picture so that Saint Peter didn’t get all dressed up for nothing.
