We often overcomplicate reports.
Here is my one-page report format. It is slightly different for each year group. A template for every year group is available free to download.
*YEAR 6 TEACHERS/MATHS LEADS*
FREE resource breaking down the language that has been repeated in the past maths SATs papers.
Introduces a term with advice, then asks pupils to use this advice to solve a question using that same term.

Job interview this year. Few candidates. Taught a lesson same time as another candidate. Observers were in my lesson for maybe 3/30 mins. Odd. Turns out another candidate had taught the *exact* same lesson as me. My lesson, that I put on TES. Interviewer didn't believe me 🤣
Year 6 teachers and maths leads
I've analysed all the maths language used in the maths SATs papers and provided tips for children to use to help them comprehend the questions better

***OFSTED DEEP DIVE***
I've uploaded the list of questions I compiled around a reading deep dive. It includes question for subject leads, questions around phonics and questions children could be asked. Hope it is of use to someone.
I visit a lot of schools to look at phonics provision.
Would people on here find it useful if I wrote some threads about best practice that I have observed?
Our school recently invested in these (only £6) and they make planning much quicker/easier. Allows you to see progression of knowledge they should already have and where they will go after your class all in one portable flipbook
For start of topic/lesson I just check this
YEAR 6 TEACHERS (and KS2 TEACHERS generally)
I've compiled a list of FREE maths resources and where to find them to help in preparing for the SATs (includes both arithmetic and problem solving/reasoning)

YEAR 6 TEACHERS AND MATHS LEADS
A FREE child-friendly PowerPoint explaining the language used in the KS2 Maths SATs that can be used in class this week for revision!
For anybody worried about how many YR 6 GD writers they have - on a call today, in which I spoke to 10 separate Y6 teachers, everybody said they had either 0 or 1. So, don't panic.
SUBJECT LEADERS!
Below I've attached two pictures of questions I compiled off the internet for questions you should have answers for in case pesky OFSTED come knocking. Should help you to prepare for any meeting you have with them!
Many schools use ClassDojo or an equivalent to message parents daily - why not use this tool for retrieval practice?
e.g. "Today, we learnt about classification in science. Ask your child what a mammal is. In English, we looked at verbs. Ask you child to tell you three verbs."
Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 teachers
I made a revision pack of all the spellings rules from Years 3 - 6. It was initially made for SATs revision but all 4 year groups could find it useful
*YEAR 6 TEACHERS/ENGLISH LEADS*
Grammar revision pack full of definitions, examples and test tips for pupils!

Special thanks to

for advice and proofing.
Requests on Teacher Facebook be like:
'Has anyone got a two week planning sequence on the Mayans linked to the topic 'time travel' and the year 6 evolution science unit that includes poetry and interpretative dance? Struggling to find anything. Thanks in advance'
I'm so bored of seeing these vids. Hugs, high fives, unique handshakes etc. This is a waste of learning time and you don't value children through one minor interaction. You value children throughout the entire day through all your conversations and actions.
***SATs TIP***
Download your current year 6's marked test scripts from the NCA tools website to use as modelled examples for next year's class (works especially well for reading and test technique generally).
YEAR 6 TEACHERS!
I made an arithmetic paper with errors in it. Some answers are correct and demonstrate fluency; some are right, but don't. Best used with partners discussing the errors and what was fluent.
Comes with guidance and answers.
Using Worked Examples in the Classroom:
- what they are
- why we should use them
- how to gradually remove the scaffold using them
A task design thread 🧵
I was tasked with re-designing our medium term plans to make them more in line with the new OFSTED education framework
This is what I came up with using Great Fire of London as a topic example - one A3 sized plan
Will upload to TES if anyone finds it useful!
Many argue that doing past papers has little use.
However, when it comes to the Y6 Maths Reasoning Papers, I think there is *some* use.
There are a lot of question types that have been repeated over the years. Plenty of examples can be found below.

YEAR 6 TEACHERS
I've posted a whole sheet of examples of how to include formality and informality in writing for children in year 6 - aimed at those aspiring for a greater depth level but accessible for all.

Unless you've been in year 6, don't criticise the amount of testing teachers do.
You have to assess 4 years worth of curriculum content, as well as ensure it is revisited frequently enough for all children to retain it.
I'm all ears to a viable alternative (there isn't one).
Here's a peek at the blog I'm currently working on. It's an in-depth analysis of language used in KS2 Maths SATs papers to help with classroom practice. Would anyone be interested in reading this when it is finished?
This excerpt below is about the term 'correct' in the tests.
Here it is - an analysis of the language used in the KS2 Maths SATs reasoning papers. Feel free to share it as you please. Downloadable link at the top of the blogpost.
Here is an example of the spelling resources I make for my Year 6 class. I give it to children as a double-sided sheet, which they have 30 mins to complete normally. Would people be interested in these?
I'm building a list of teaching strategies that encourage higher levels of participation and thinking from pupils.
What would you add to this list?
- No opt out
- Cold calling
- Mini whiteboards
- Build Upon
- Track the speaker
- All hands up
Thanks in advance!
RE: Reports
I use the previous year's and simply tweak names and individual comments here and there to make it more personal to that child.
Takes me roughly 2 hours to do the whole class.
NB: I don't care if you disagree with this thinking. And neither does my headteacher.
Just wanted to share something I consider good practice from our school - nothing groundbreaking but worth sharing if it helps anyone. It can be done in any subject, but we have an RE class book where we put shorter tasks or post-it note reflections.
Would anyone find a collection of GD writing examples to be useful? As in, a collection beside the exemplificaitons materials to look at. I could compile writing from my GD chn from last year that were moderated at GD
Once the 2019 SATs were officially marked, I downloaded the 5 highest scorers for reading in my class from the Assessment Gateway. They may be useful for discussing with your Y6 class what makes a correct or incorrect answer. I can share them online if people want them?
YEAR 6 TEACHERS -
For Monday morning, I've uploaded a FREE PowerPoint for quick, last-minute revision.
It's in a short, bullet-point format to test retrieval, rather than be extensive. Feel free to edit to add in your own tips and hints!
Found this really cool website for geography. You can type in a country and see it's true size by dragging it over other countries and seeing how they compare!
Below is Australia over Europe

'Literacy across the curriculum'.
This needs to become more about reading a variety of texts across different subjects - not writing a newspaper report about the Romans.
***THREAD***
Questions an OFSTED inspector may ask you as a middle leader (about your leadership and those who lead you)
*These are all questions/topics I was asked about in a recent visit by an OFSTED inspector working as a consultant to the school*
YEAR 6 TEACHERS
I've uploaded a free Word Class revision PowerPoint to TES. It explains the word class with tips and then has following slides of SATs questions on that word class. I've attached photos and the link below.

Most effective thing in helping to achieve 100% in maths last year?
This daily early morning work grid that focused on class weaknesses
Each day I would simply change the questions and children would answer wherever they could on the page or on the back of it
You have been a loyal servant. But alas, our school is moving into the 21st century and using electronic registers next year. Your services are no longer needed. Goodbye, my friend.
What if we just called spelling Phonics all the way to Year 6? (With the approach towards spelling obviously being phonics-based).
Would mean KS2 teachers are trained appropriately in teaching of phonics and that phonics teaching is considered beyond PSC more.

I don't see the issue with teaching the inequality signs (>) as crocodile mouths. As long as it is clear where the bigger value is placed, why does it matter that it is referred to as a hungry crocodile?

He has made an editable word document of a Year 6 Arithmetic test identical to the KS2 SATs paper from 2018 (so has all the new question formats too - e.g. 1,005,300 = 1,000,000 + ______ +300)

Met a northern teacher on the weekend. He said he applied for a teaching role where there were 97 applicants. Is this experience true for anybody else up north?
From the training I had around OFSTED today, an 'outstanding' grade seems like an absolute fantasy.
There is no way trying to achieve that does not increase workload. And saying we should have already been doing it all because the curriculum came out years ago is a load of BS.
Year 6 teachers - these are perfect for short and sharp reading revision. Can't believe I've only found them this late!
Superb work
