Segregation in Dewsbury is staggering. The river Calder runs through the town. On the west bank the population is 1.3% White British, while on the east bank it's 92.4%. Some wards are a bit more mixed, but the river is the great dividing line. UK's version of 8 Mile in Detroit.

Say what you like about the Taliban, but they've definitely improved the aesthetics of the Afghan state. They've gone for the consistent theme of white with black trim for the national flag (featuring beautiful Islamic calligraphy), state emblem, and men's dress code.

It's incredible to see in visual form how badly the Central Powers fumbled the bag in WWI. They grinded for 4 years to reach their territorial peak, only for the war to end in their defeat less than 4 months later.

I can't remember the last time I thought about the late queen. How do people talk about her for more than 30 seconds? She did nothing, said nothing, as far as we know had no ideas of her own. It's like debating the merits of a chair leg or lamp shade. There's nothing there.

The incident happened on 1 May and he was questioned and released by police in New York that day. He's had 10 days to get out the country. Could have gone JFK to Dubai, direct flight, no visa required. But he stayed and gambled on the goodness of the system. A fool's gamble.

I haven't heard much about Venezuela this last couple of years so I checked up on its GDP figures, and holy shit... GDP in nominal terms (billions) 2022: Luxembourg $82.3 Venezuela $82.1 For context, it was $482 billion in 2014.
