For those asking why they are not dropping water on the fire at Notre Dame, firefighting officials say that dumping water would likely destroy the stone structure.

Erotic pilgrim badge, Netherlands. This pewter badge dates to the late 14th/early 15th century and depicts a vulva dressed as a pilgrim. Such images were believed to lure evil spirits away from the pilgrim.

From Michel Aupetit, Archbishop of Paris: "To all priests in Paris: firefighters are still fighting to save the towers of Notre-Dame de Paris. The frame, the roof and the boom are consumed. Pray. If you wish, you can ring the bells of your churches to invite to prayer."

Once owned by King Henry VIII, a bizarre horned helmet and its grotesquely grinning mask topped by a pair of strange spectacles is one of the most intriguing and mystifying artefacts to have survived from Tudor England. Via Mediumaevum on Tumblr

So I just finished watching The King on Netflix ... let’s begin with historical accuracy. I’ll say it’s about 1% to 2% a realistic depiction of the events of Henry V’s reign. But I don’t watch movies to learn history - rather to be entertained and I really enjoyed it!

No deaths or injuries reported. The cathedral had closed to the public at 6:45 pm local time, and the fire started shortly afterwards. So luckily, very few people would have been in the cathedral as the flames spread.

Images from the Sketchbook of Villard de Honnecourt. He was probably a 13th-century carpenter living in France. Villard left us with over 250 illustrations of people, animals, objects and buildings. You can see the entire manuscript online - look for BNF Français 19093 #medieval
