The weather is absolutely torrential in London tonight. I’ve never been a fan of the rain and I know it’s morbid but when the weather is like this at night I can’t help but turn my thoughts towards those with nowhere to go. Imagine being homeless in this.

Rachel Maclean has just said on #BBCQT that the government has legislated to prevent fire and rehire. That is utterly untrue and the government voted to prevent @BarryGardiner ’s Bill to stop fire and rehire last October.

Didn’t quite think I’d walk into work this morning to have a conversation with a former Prime Minister but there we are. Grateful to speak to Tony Blair about growing up under a Labour government and the difference for my brother and sister under the coalition onwards.

If you had stopped & spoken to him you might have understood the reasons in which he became homeless & advocated for change. Instead you were part of a government in which homelessness went up, planned to criminalise rough sleepers and are somehow blaming the Mayor of London.

I will be ok and people shouldn’t worry. We’re all a bit broken but it’s about how you piece yourself back together. Fingers crossed for good counselling, coping mechanisms and good friends. If I don’t come on your night out etc don’t take it personally, it’s baby steps for now

I’m going to head to bed now and after that seek out my local AA. Grateful to have a great boss who understands all too well the detrimental effect alcohol can have on somebody. Happy to chat to anyone else who struggles. Parliament can be a tricky place with regards to drink.

Sadly this isn’t uncommon. People soak sleeping bags, they urinate on them, set them on fire and beat the owner up. There is something very rotten and lacking in basic empathy about how homeless people are treated. People who have fallen on hard times seen as less than human.

Been at a festival all weekend and now apparently entering back into some truly ridiculous discourse around the “riots” The way I see it is having “legitimate concerns” about immigration is normally centred on housing or schools, not burning hotels down because you hate Muslims.

I have had to admit myself that I am an alcoholic, I always will be and the only way I can learn to cope is through abstinence based recovery and to not drink again. I need to do this for myself and for the benefit of those I love and care about and who love and care about me.

I don’t pour vodka on my corn flakes, I don’t wake up needing a drink, I use alcohol like most people to escape, but I don’t escape, it causes crippling anxiety and I can’t help but just feel like ending it all, I don’t like who I am when I drink and I imagine others don’t either

I then once again naively thought I was in a “better place” and was ok to drink again. The truth is, I am not in a better place, I am an alcoholic, in many ways a functioning alcoholic. I use alcohol like most people, as a form of escapism. It’s also a part of the culture at work

Close friends know I have struggled with alcohol for many years. I gave it up for a year around 5 years ago, I didn’t think I had an issue but that a short break had done me good. I then went to AA and admitted I had a problem and went clean for another 12 months.

We’ve had many ups and downs and didn’t speak for years, but I was pleased to show my Dad round Parliament today to try to give him some idea what his eldest lad does. He shook hands with the next Deputy PM @AngelaRayner and said he’s proud. I’ve learned that’s all that matters

I’ve just had my second sober Christmas and it’s been wonderful compared to previous years. I’m 450 days sober tomorrow and I never thought I’d see the day. If you ever want to talk in confidence about issues you might have with alcohol I’m always here for any of you.

5 years ago today I left my Masters degree after 3 months due to having no money and no financial support. I felt like it had all come tumbling down again. 5 years on I sat watching the words I wrote be spoken in the Palace of Westminster. Better days are always waiting

I told Gordon last year, as I told Tony Blair, my life didn’t turn out how I wanted at first but if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t have had a chance. I compare how I grew up with that of my younger siblings and it’s night and day. Forever grateful.
