🚨 CHANGE: After holding a hand up throughout that Rachel Reeves press conference and even being told by a civil servant "she has a list and you aren't on it" ... Rachel Reeves broke from the list and granted a question to the only hand in the room. A new dawn has ... ?
This story is nuts ...
Liz Truss was warned BY HER OWN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS that the Australian and New Zealand trade deals would COST BRITISH JOBS.
But the Department for International Trade kept it a secret and insisted the deals were amazing.
UK’s Liz Truss was warned of blow to food sector under Australia and New Zealand trade deals.
Data obtained by POLITICO shows economic toll on farmers known before key post-Brexit trade talks began.
🚨 MPs who were at the 1922 committee tell me Truss was accused by blue collar Conservative Robert Halfon of "trashing the last 10 years of conservatism".
NEW: Just announced in the Commons. The government is NOT scheduling a debate on the UK-Australia trade deal before the ratification deadline on 21 July.
Parliamentary scrutiny at its best.
Shots fired! Mordaunt in the Commons — with AMT sitting just down the bench: "I'm amazed to find myself here this morning given my reported work ethic."
Interesting vid someone sent me ... Conservative Desmond Swayne in the super safe New Forest West seat but facing huge anger at a hustings over the sewage issue. He defends his voting record but audience cheers when he's told off for calling questioner a "shrinking violet"
SCOOP (because no-one else cares):
Conservative MP Laurence Robertson has been sacked from his unpaid job as a trade envoy to Angola and Zambia after he rebelled against the government on COVID rules last night.
And herein lies the problem: see this WhatsApp from a senior No.10 aide.
CCHQ didn't like me describing their gender focus as a "culture war" tactic last night.
Seems questions are for hacks who write about issues in ways the Tories approve of. Not ideal for press freedom.
In the v small room for Health Sec Victoria Atkins press conference on gender attacks on Labour this morning. Not a lot of people there. Me in the front row. I had a hand up the whole time through the Q&A (as always.) Atkins ignored it and stuck to her list.
BREAKING: Labour MP Jim MacMahon concedes defeat in the Hartlepool by-election. Tells
@SkyNews
: "It's pretty clear from the way the ballots are landing that we are not close to winning this despite our best endeavors."
OBR reckons freeports are basically pointless. "We have assumed that the main effect of the freeports will be to alter the location rather than the volume of economic activity." The spending watchdog says any benefits will be so small they will be hard to measure.
In the v small room for Health Sec Victoria Atkins press conference on gender attacks on Labour this morning. Not a lot of people there. Me in the front row. I had a hand up the whole time through the Q&A (as always.) Atkins ignored it and stuck to her list.
NEW: Win for the UK as US says its unilateral override bill of the protocol will NOT damage its current trade dialogues with Washington.
Asked if it will be a hinderance to the talks or chances of future trade deal, White House spox said: "I don't believe it will be."
Another dig from Mordaunt? "For my own part, every single time the international trade cttee or other body of this House has asked me to go before it I have. I think that is the attitude of the ministerial team & we will continue to do that."
(AMT no-showed 8 requests from ITC)
EXCLUSIVE: The U.K. will use "shock and awe" tactics based on behavioral science to spur businesses and the public to prepare for the end of the Brexit transition period.
I just spotted Theresa May telling fellow Tory MPs to stop making fun of Jeremy Corbyn for his green tie - because it's in tribute to Grenfell victims.
#PMQs
Latest pic of Keir Starmer pretending no one had their hand up to ask a question - at his No10 press conference this morning.
Chancellor Rachel Reeves isn't afraid to take questions from reporters not on the list aides give ministers in advance. What is the PM worried about?
A friend just sent me this. I don't mind not getting a question but I keep a hand up the entire time in silent protest at aides acting as gatekeepers to asking questions at press conferences. It's a measure of press control
Cabinet Office minister Penny Mordaunt tells the European Scrutiny Committee it is not the job of the Joint Committee to determine which goods are "at risk" of ending up in RoI. She said it is for the trade talks. But the NI Protocol states it's a Joint Cttee job. 🤔
Halfon argued Truss was undoing progress like rises in the minimum wage, tax cuts for lower earners and work on apprenticeships etc with her tax cuts for the rich and uncapping banker bonuses.
🚨 NEW: Biden snubs Global Britain.
Washington REJECTS the offer from
@annietrev
for negotiations on steel tariffs in Jan.
U.S. Commerce spokesperson: "While Secretary Raimondo appreciates the kind invitation, she’s not in a position to travel to London in-person at this time."
Keir Starmer does the same thing. I've been waging a silent campaign against it ... mine is usually the only hand up in the room for the entire Q&A. I know there's no chance of getting a question because I no longer bother to text aides in advance asking for one.
Hearing Liam Byrne is having a go at Keir Starmer at PLP tonight. Accusing Labour of having no national policy, polling, comms, staff support or attack plan to help him in his West Mids bid.
Can't get over how bonkers this is. Uxbridge MP makes a big song and dance about needing a fish and chip shop in Uxbridge ... but literally voted against an application for a fish and chip shop in Uxbridge in 2019. It's all there in the council meeting minutes
Steve was in attendance at the Hillingdon Council planning meeting in which they heard an application for a fish and chip shop in Uxbridge town centre.
He voted against it.
You'd think there are better ways to respond to Piers Morgan than repeating the same thing over and over without addressing the question ... or boycotting his show.
‘Given the level of failure during your reign have you offered your resignation to the PM?’ -
@piersmorgan
‘My one focus is making sure we deliver the best for our children.’ - Gavin Williamson
Piers says the Minister has been a catastrophe and should ‘own it’.
@UKpoliticsPL
Thanks so much! But change doesn't happen until politicians even give up the pre-determined list of questioners, or at least take a few questions from hands in the room as well.
Jeremy Corbyn definitely starting to sound more like a People's Vote campaigner.
Tells Commons: "Whatever Brexit plan the new Tory leader comes up with, after three long years of failure they should have the confidence to go back to the people on a deal agreed by Parliament."
NEW: Deputy Labour leader Angela Rayner responds to Rishi Sunak being probed by the Commons watchdog:
"If Rishi Sunak has got nothing to hide, he should commit to publishing the register before May's elections so the public can see for themselves."
🚨🚨🚨OK I'm hearing from numerous sources now that there will be a reshuffle starting after PMQs. Sackings first and Cabinet appointed this PM. Then the rest of the appointments over the next two days.
Caveat: I might be wrong. But watch this space.
Another guy called 'Tyler the Creator' said he wanted to thank someone who made it so he "couldn't come to this country five years ago. I know she's at home pissed off: Theresa May."
#Brits2020
And a personal note on this (apologies) ...
I wrote a first draft of this piece in June after the (literal) Matt Hancock affair. But a couple of days later I took six weeks off work for mental health issues.
From the excellent

Britain likes to think of itself as whiter than white when it comes to corruption ... but the actions of the current government have dented that reputation.
🚨 Trade Minister Conor Burns tells a Cons conference fringe event Kemi Badenoch "is the future of our party" and she gets the need to "move beyond Instagram posts about free trade agreements."
🗳️ THE DEFINITIVE ACCOUNT: How the Sunak election campaign melted down in six disastrous weeks
I spoke to 40+ people for the inside track on both campaigns over the past six weeks. This is the result.
Trying to get a question from Laura Trott right now. She's just going through the pre-prepared list. I'm in the second row. No chance she can't see my hand
Robertson had told colleagues whips were threatening him with the sack and that the threats had emboldened him to stick two fingers up at Boris Johnson. (h/t

Govt minister Lord Agnew drops a bomb at Treasury committee on Brexit readiness: "There has been a head-in-the-sand approach by traders." Two Brexit false alarms, covid and now a recession have not helped. He warns traders they "really must engage in a more energetic way."
EXCLUSIVE: The total bill for golden goodbyes during the chaotic Theresa May regime: almost £850,000.
Payouts were made to senior figures who are now back in government under Boris Johnson. Also to ministers who quit amid scandals. Plus numerous aides.
Doesn't bode well for the Tories that top aides to the Chancellor and Chairman reckon now is the time to quit and find other jobs.
The former is in charge of "the plan" which is said to be "working" while the latter is in charge of the CCHQ ground campaign for the election.
Source close to Tory rebels: "No10 have responded by removing the whip from two former chancellors, a former lord chancellor and Winston Churchill’s grandson. What has has happened to the Conservative Party?"
Campaigner
@JolyonMaugham
from the

said the list revealed “the vast financial rewards you could reap if you had a minister looking out for your interests."
Britain latest:
Hold a sword in a Zelda-esque ritual and you can become PM.
Make a rational decision that shredding thousands of laws in 100 days might not be a great idea and you can't become PM.
@Jack_Blanchard_
@POLITICOEurope
Cleverly says he was wincing during the Labour conference and thought: "Please make it stop."
Blanchard: "You did make it stop by losing in the Supreme Court."
Lewis told whips he would vote for Grayling, I'm told. Rumour has it he was shaking when he turned up to ISC meeting to vote in the chair. Source: "He knew exactly what he was doing, he's clearly been plotting this for some time with the Labour whips and the SNP member."
As per, mine was the sole hand up at the
@Keir_Starmer
press conference in Farnborough this AM. He ignored it & stuck to his list of hacks aides gave him beforehand.
The list regime = less diversity of thought, more press control from No.10 & no hope for smaller media outlets.
Sounds like the "anti-growth coalition" is the new "establishment" for Liz Truss. A melting pot of all those who don't agree with her who are lurking in the shadows or plotting on the BBC and on liberal podcasts to foil her plans.
It's quite amusing TBH keeping a hand up for sometimes 20-odd minutes (often the *only* hand in the room) while politicians pretend not to see it and run through a pre-determined list of reporters. But this is *not* about *me* getting a question. It's about general press control
Labour Party has promised no FTA with China due to human rights concerns but isn't afraid to take Chinese lobbying cash - selling it ad space in the Labour conference guide.
Monti (aged 8) wrote to me asking if Father Christmas will be able to deliver presents this year 🎅🎁🎄
I've had lots of letters about this, so I have spoken with experts and can assure you that Father Christmas will be packing his sleigh and delivering presents this Christmas!
I interviewed
@KateOsamor
and she said all this headline-making stuff to me. Now she and Labour are trying to argue she was somehow misrepresented. (An attempt at a thread follows)
Former Downing Street Director of Comms Lee Cain on Boris Johnson's handling of the pandemic: "It was the wrong crisis for this prime minister's skills set."
Four publicity "bursts" are planned ...
July & August: "Nudge" or "shove" people to take action
September to November: "Shock and awe"
December & January: "Loss avoidance"
January 2021 onward: "new opportunities"
The term, more often used to describe a military strategy of overwhelming force and closely associated with the Iraq war, is contained in a document setting out the government's communications plan.
Grayling was No. 10's pick for the job and he was expected to win the chairmanship no problems. The government put a majority of Conservatives on the committee to make it happen. But Lewis scuppered their plans.
Downing Street clearly not happy he colluded with Labour Party and SNP MPs aganist Conservative plan to vote Chris Grayling in as chair of the Intelligence and Security Committee.
MPs also challenged him on his new plan to ditch the 2017/19 manifestos (ie the 10 pledges from his leadership campaign). Starmer read out a pre-written speech beforehand.
Liz Truss hints that groups with "vested interests" must be argued down in support of free trade ... suggests we should stop being concerned about imported products not being made to our standards. 🚨
Minister admits post-Brexit border infrastructure that cost hundreds of millions of pounds is now "redundant" after the government ditched plans for animal and plant health checks. 🫠
This afternoon I met with
@Jacob_Rees_Mogg
and his team regarding
@portsmouthport
. We’ve had unprecedented government investment in both freight and passenger facilities, and the port welcomes the new operating model. We’ll work to find new opportunities for redundant facilities.
As per
@tnewtondunn
: he nominated himself after being told he had all four Labour/SNP votes. Grayling nominated himself yesterday not expecting a challenge.
Quite a mini coup. Of the 9 members of the ISC, I'm told the vote was 5-4 in favour of Lewis. Lewis nominated himself this afternoon, having been told he had all four Labour/SNP votes, stunning Grayling, who nominated himself yesterday and didn't expect any challenges.
Mini-scoop in this profile: Mordaunt critics in the trade department are pointing to new documents released this week showing she did ZERO overseas travel for her job as trade minister in the first quarter of 2022.
The plan forms part of a £4.5 million advertising deal (unearthed through the
@Tussell_UK
government procurement database) with ad firm MullenLowe London - which has also been working on communications around the coronavirus pandemic.
THE POINT IS to be another voice sending this well-worn message to other people: If you’re feeling bad you don’t have to suffer alone. Talk to people, get support from work, get help and help yourself.
NEW: BBC announces raft of election programming, including a head to head between Boris Johnson and Jeremy Corbyn and a seven-way debate with party leaders
Great that this guidance is being updated - and lots of sensible sounding advice in there.
One thing I would note: Just as we need to break the stigma around mental health we need to break the stigma around medicating for it where appropriate.
Um ...
Harman was referring to the previous government. The one run by Boris Johnson.
She checked with the govt when her Tweets first came to light in June 2022. Boris Johnson was PM.
The govt told her it had confidence in her and she should continue.
Harmans speech was very revealing and effectively threw No10 under a bus.
It implied, that despite the fact that she had already tweeted in advance of the hearings that Johnson was guilty, that she had the full backing of the PM and therefore the Gov to chair the committee.
