Folks wanted dogs that could clear crowds in front of a carriage, Dalmatians fit the bill. That's why they're associated with firefighting - clearing the road for firefighters.

@NateSilver538 IMO, the case for dropping Trump was always stronger on fundamentals: (1) Incumbency is widely accepted as an advantage, former office holder not so much. (2) Trump ran behind most Rs, Biden ran ahead of most Ds. (3) Specific R-alternates credibly more electable.
