My biggest surprise is its ability to find zero days in lots of working code and its ability to rhyme to make great song lyrics. I am sure there's more. There are other surprises still but they're somewhat advantageous to Playground right now. That's how big of a deal it is.

Something I've been wondering about proprietary foundation models. Like someone breaks into a data centre and takes a GPU that has the weights running inference on them. It's just a file. Then like that attacker has your $100m+ training right. Feels a bit asymmetric.

Deployment context matters a lot when thinking about security. Many papers (not just adv example papers) suggest cool algorithmic attacks on ML but focus on constrained problems that don’t transfer to real systems due to unrealistic assumptions about attacker-controlled assets.

Memory corruption issues are the root cause for roughly 70% of vulnerabilities. This is stuff like use-after-frees, buffer overflows, race conditions. To exploit memory corruption you need to know something about the program state on the machine and use it. LLMs can't do that yet

1 Secure Boot: technically this was added in the A100 series, but they've made it even more aggressive for the H100. Secure Boot checks that the firmware running on the device is the same firmware that NVIDIA distributed with it

2 Hardware encryption: they implemented AES 256 in hardware so that all communication to and from the CPU can be encrypted in-flight. this stops anybody from hijacking the signal via side channel so they can't copy all the data as you send it to the GPU

when you get a cloud instance with a GPU on any of the basic clouds you can envision a "hole" in the standard VM that allows your software to directly interact with the GPU across PCI. this is nice for usability but also means that you can also technically fry that GPU remotely

In 6th grade I was in an advanced math class but would finish early. I would pretend to go to the bathroom but sneak down the hall to the bomb shelter closet to try to pick the lock because it sounded mysterious. I was eventually successful but discovered it was just storage 😒

To everyone excitedly dunking on AI-based malware detection rn: you should know this kind of attack is not actually new - @dlowd proposed this back in 2004 as a technique for fooling spam filters and @biggiobattista has work from 2015 showing that you can poison feature selection

They expertly demonstrate why you should never put a browser on the same network as CAN Bus :P You need physical access once and then can run the attack remote - also note that you can do the injection without root!

@sampullara @alexgraveley I’m specifically debunking the claim that stealing a single GPU out of a data center used for training/inference is a useful exercise (this was an elaborate subtweet lol). the human factor is always the easiest - anybody who disputes that simply doesn’t grok how security works :)
