My contribution to The Discourse ™️is that reading math is a skill, and you can't expect your first or second-year undergrads to just know it without ever being taught. If you expect them to "do the reading before class", you have to AT THE VERY LEAST teach them how to do it.

I think students should be able to withdraw from a course whenever they want. Just because you planned on giving it your best and then, possibly due to unforseen circumstances, you couldn't, shouldn't mean that now you have to suffer till the end and have it affect your grade.

My secret to reading (especially advanced) math textbooks is to Google the theorem and read proofs written by friendlier people before coming back and reading the text. So people who put their lecture notes up online, thank you for your service to all of us.

You guys think this is tweet is bad (it is) let me tell you about the man i met this weekend who tried his best to get me to say that teaching algebra to his 8th grader was useless. He had it against expanding formulas like (x+y)*(2x+3y) “WHEN WOULD THEY EVER NEED IT?” he asked.

Idea for an adaptive weather app: at the end of every day it asks "were you cold today?" and "did you wear a jacket today?" and then matches this info to that days weather to predict if you need a jacket the next day.

Someone I met once asked me if I know "group theory" after learning that I do mathematics. I was surprised and said yeah! They then proceeded to talk to me about the behaviour of people in groups vs as individuals for the next half hour and I was in too deep to change course.

Do you speak a language that you can't read? It seems like most South Asians have this experience. For example, I speak and understand Hindi but I can't read the script. OTOH, I've never heard someone say this about a European language. Is this common here?

@howie_hua My 5th-grade teacher was teaching us about long division & she wanted to give us exercises where there was no remainder. I asked what do I do if it keeps going (i.e. there is a remainder) & she told me to ask her later & then taught me about decimals "in private" aka at my desk.
