Teachers and pastors: please don’t call what David did to Bathsheba “an adulterous affair.” While, yes, David committed adultery against his many wives, Bathsheba had no say. God did not blame her; the blame of the predation fell solely upon David. This was no mutual affair.

Dear #SBC18 There are 970 minutes of programming at your conference, of which 12 minutes are allowed to a woman. That’s a little over 1% of the voice, yet there are more than 55% of women in your congregations. WHY?

Perhaps one of the most perplexing parts of leaving a church is not being asked why. I get it. I understand it feels like gossip, but so few people are curious. I would love someone to be curious, not for uncovering dirt, but for understanding our pain and shouldering the story.

It’s not “ruining” a Christian leader’s life to expose the truth about their predation. It’s called love. Love of justice. Love of the victimized.

I have found that survivors, while they struggle to work through the heinous crime they’ve experienced, find it equally excruciating coming to terms with people who KNEW but did nothing. Bystanding (and not acting) is egregious and wrong. We are called to protect the innocent.

Let me be clear: To out a predator publicly IS NOT GOSSIP. It's justice. It's protecting more people from being harmed. Brave disclosure is the very essence of God whose heart ALWAYS bends to the vulnerable. To not speak up is sin. Let’s flip the narrative, folks.

Jesus's church doesn’t need leaders to preserve its reputation. He's more than capable of doing that. Remember He's always on the side of the widow, orphan, marginalized & abuse victim. If the church elevates reputation over the cries of the broken, it's broken itself.
