about Sampanthan's legacy and his utter failure in fulfilling his role as a Tamil leader - the reason for the almost apathetic response to his death in Tamil circles.
Growing up in the 80s as Eelam Tamil refugees in rural Germany, our only connection to Tamil popular culture was Tamil Nadu’s movie industry. My parents had to go to this uncle’s house in another village, from which he ran a VHS racket to get movies and cassettes lol.
British Tamils have projected the Tamil national flower and remembrance messages onto Westminster palace, the British Houses of Parliament, on the eve of Maaveerar Naal, the Tamil National Remembrance Day

05.05.1976: 44 years ago, 21 year old Veluppillai Prabhakaran founded the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam to liberate the Tamil people from Sri Lankan state oppression
LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran's 12 year old son Balachandran was captured and executed by the Sri Lankan army 13 years ago. Sri Lanka’s def sec Kamal Gunaratna himself is thought to have pulled the trigger, on the orders of Gotabaya Rajapaksa
SPB was a legend for many reasons. His songs gave some solace and a connection to Tamil art, while Eelam Tamils were subjected to oppression and displacement. By lending his voice to Eelam liberation songs, he cemented the special place he occupied in Eelam Tamil lives

Thrilled to announce my first published paper, co-authored with
@kcroninfurman
- a case-study on the LTTE's rise to become the dominant Tamil movement in the 1980s.
Sinhalese who are cheering this on - there are a few statues and monuments celebrating the genocide and its perpetrators in various locations across the North-East. Please feel free to go and tear them down. I have a list if you need
The moment a statue of slave trader Edward Colston toppled into Bristol’s harbour. ‘It’s what he deserves. I’ve been waiting all my life for this moment’ someone told me in the moments after.
The surprise and shock amongst Sinhalese about this sort of footage is interesting. Tamil journalists and papers, have covered these sort of incidents for years and this is shared widely on SM. Yet it was always ignored/covered up in the south. Will that change now, is the q.
At our wedding last Monday, Kirthika wore the same sari her mum wore at her own wedding in Navatkiri in June 1987. Her mum says because the Sri Lankan army was shelling the area, they conducted the wedding at night with white flags flying..

Sri Lanka is a racist country, both institutionally and societally. Sinhala supremacy has been the leading ideology amongst the majority for 71 years - killing over 100,000 Tamils. For Tamils, independence from the UK only meant subservience to Sinhalese
My strongest condemnation of the torching of the PM Mr.Ranil W’s house .
The Aragalaya does not need violence to achieve it’s goal of sending away a Bad government and establishing a viable,People’s have shown extreme maturity and restraint until now.
Eelam Tamils and Tamil Nadu Tamils should get together and make our own version of the Muralidharan biopic and provide a factual account of how his acceptance and support of Sinhala supremacy was THE most significant aspect of his career - talent alone isn’t enough in Sri Lanka
Tamils went to this Gota Go Home rally in Melbourne, sharing information about the forthcoming Mullivaikkal genocide remembrance. They we’re mocked, abused and had their leaflets ripped up

We always hear the stories about the Sinhala saviours..where are the Sinhala perpetrators? Hundreds took part in these genocidal acts. Many of those would now be in there 60s and 70s and still living freely, going about their day in Colombo.
⬛️Remembering Black July 40 years on
Today marks 40 years since the horrors of the anti-Tamil pogrom of 1983, when thousands of Tamils were killed by Sinhala mobs backed by the then UNP government and state forces.
As Eelam Tamils prepare to mark the 11th anniversary of the end of the war on May 18,
@instagram
has blocked the
#tamileelam
hashtag. Amidst covid restrictions, many Tamils across the world were planning virtual commemorations. This is censorship - no doubt due to mass reporting
Once again Tamils are suffering consequences for decisions they didn’t make and votes they didn’t cast. This is where the demands for autonomy and then a separate state came from.
GGG will take a decisive turn this week. It’ll either stand in solidarity Tamils remembering genocide and speak up against the militarised oppression that’s ongoing. Or it won’t.
The censorship by
@instagram
of Tamil posts, including art and news, is absolutely ridiculous. Initially they banned anything with the flag or photos of cadres, now even posts of art about resistance to the (still genocidal) state are flagged, such as this one by

Terrible that messages blaming “Islamic extremism” are already circulating. Before people unfamiliar with Sri Lanka jump to conclusions - the country has a long history of attacks against Christian targets by the Buddhist majority - most recent just a few days ago.

Amidst all the (very justified and very overdue) outrage against Gota amongst the Sinhala people, it is very hard not to be astonished that his worst crimes, atrocities against Tamils, do not get mentioned. He committed his by far worst acts in 2009.

As Tamils handed out flyers they were harassed and subjected to racist abuse with at least one man tearing up their flyers – all of which was caught on camera this week.

No it isn’t. They just displaced refugees because of their bigotry. They have been attacking Christians for years. They’ve been attacking Muslims for years. They committed genocide against Tamils. Don’t create your BS feel good videos just so you can promote some fake ideal

to withdraw from 800, as he doesn’t want him to get “affected” by the negative publicity. His statement still fails to acknowledge and dismisses the legitimate concerns. For VJS to QT it, rather than make his own statement is a cop out.
Every year we see the huge efforts the Tamil people in the NE go through, amidst threats and intimidation by the military, to commemorate those that died fighting for the LTTE.
It’s that time of the year!

Sri Lanka is a racist country - institutionally & societally. Sinhala supremacy has been the leading ideology for 72 years - killing over 100k Tamils. For Tamils, independence from GB only meant subservience to the Sinhalese
On Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day we remember the lives lost, the families torn apart, and the enduring resilience of the Tamil people.
May this day remind us of our responsibility to stand against injustice and work towards a world where everyone can live in peace and freedom.
We were the 1st generation growing up in Germany. And for many Eelam Tamils in the diaspora, Ilayaraja’s music defined that era of forced displacement. From hearing it on the radio in Jaffna, to getting bootleg tapes from Nathan mama in Mettingen. His music travelled with us.
Black July is also important because once again, but this time on a much larger scale, the North-East became a haven for tens of thousands of Tamils. This reiterated the claim to the Tamil homeland. The Sri Lankan state itself literally shipped them there.
The lion and the bow leaves are the main problem. Remove that and have a constitution that reflects that flag - equal, decentralised, with each nation/community/region able to determine their affairs, and they may be on to something.
And as problematic as the Tamil cinema industry is..for many of us growing up isolated in villages, that was all we had in terms of a connection to the Tamil people outside our immediate families. So I want to pay tribute to those artists who gave us that - especially Ilayaraja
Police harassing a Tamil business owner in Vavuniya for putting up red&yellow flags. The Tamil man questioned the state’s hypocrisy of allowing the JVP and the military to commemorate, but not Tamils. He also asks why none of the several police that attended could speak Tamil.
Just to restate the obvious, but any news story on Gota’s downfall that doesn’t mention his overseeing of mass atrocities against Tamils during the war misses the main reason why he was so popular amongst the Sinhalese (until relatively recently)
The Sri Lankan state has AGAIN vandalised a Tamil genocide memorial, this time the one at
#Mullivaikkal
, on the first night of the Remembrance Week. Particularly cruel, just ahead of Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day on May 18.
All young Sri Lankans I know, when they leave the country, I ask why leave the country.?
Top 2 reasons:
1) Better salaries ( no surprise )
2) To get away from parent/family/social pressure.
Let that sink in.
Oh look it’s the new (but old) Sri Lankan flag, sans the token “minority” representation stripes, which were used as a fig leaf to cover up the flag’s racism for 70 years.
When I say Tamil I mean Tamil, I don’t mean “Sri Lankan”, I don’t mean “South Indian”.
When we speak about our food in Tamil we say “தமிழ் உணவு/சாப்பாடு - Thamizh saapadu”, not “தென்னிந்திய” or “ஶ்ரீ்லங்கா உணவு”
It’s not an accident when others try to fit you in those categories
The mayor of the Tamil cultural capital Jaffna was arrested on charges of ‘ideological reconstruction and support of the LTTE.’ This is a serious escalation in SL’s steadily increasing repression of Tamils. Mani is the most prominent Tamil figure to be arrested in recent years
Twice a year, on Nov 27 and on May 18, the strength of support for the Tamil liberation struggle becomes particularly apparent. And twice a year around those two dates, we see those opposed to the Tamil nationalist project pipe up with some expired hot-takes.
This is also why Tamils are so insistent on accountability for the crimes the military committed, including sexual violence. How scary it is to have anyone act like this, but especially someone heavily armed. Disgusting
“Tamil” and “Hindu” aren’t interchangeable. The tamil message says “tamil” and the English says “Hindu” - why? It’s the most important Tamil (not Hindu) festival. It’s not even contentious. It’s so basic.

Why Tamils reject the Sri Lankan flag:
“The lion representing the majority community holds a sword, representing bravery, facing stripes, denoting minorities. The beastly flag represents a fundamental fact: To be a Sinhalese Buddhist has long outranked being Sri Lankan.” 🇱🇰
“To be a Sinhalese Buddhist has long outranked being Sri Lankan,” writes Neil DeVotta. Here’s the story of how ethnocracy fueled Sri Lanka’s economic crisis:
This is incredibly beautiful.

Many also hoped the Sri Lankan state could be reformed, but the past 12 years (without the LTTE to blame) indicate that India and the co-chairs were wrong in thinking the LTTE was the main obstacle to a settlement. Sri Lanka still isn’t a reliable partner to India.
Norway mediated, many hoped the LTTE could be reformed.
India wasn’t convinced: as one former official told me “we were willing to give it a chance but did not hold our breath; Prabhakaran was part of the problem.”
3 years later the deal was in ruin, by 2007 war ravaging 🇱🇰
