We need to talk about what it is really like to become a mother. So I’m delighted to say that my ordinary experience of ordinary motherhood has been given a 3.5k word extract in the magazine of today’s Sunday Times 😱

His family was gutted by the Holocaust, his teenage son Eddie died of meningitis and in the first wave of Covid he spent 40 days on a ventilator. And yet

is so very alive.
I reviewed his book Getting Better for

Some day I will be sitting outside, late at night and far from home, with a glass of wine and a book. The air will be warm and there will be moths at the lamp and bats in the sky and in the distance I will hear a pack of children, giddy with freedom, shouting in the dark

Me: Ok you’ll like this joke. Why shouldn’t you let Elsa hold your balloon?
Daughter: Because she doesn’t like balloons?
Me: Remember Elsa’s big song.
Her: Because she might freeze the balloon.
Me: Because she’ll...
Her: Freeze the balloon and then it will pop.
New baby started screaming on the bus so the whole lower deck sang a lullaby until he went back to sleep JUST KIDDING EVERYONE LOATHED ME AND IT WAS AWFUL.
weird how the inside of my sanitary pad is printed with a little heart, rather than the phrase 'let every drop be matched a thousandfold with the blood of mine enemies'

Worry about funding cuts & closure of libraries.
Worry about a climate that makes survival all but impossible for many independent bookshops.
Worry about the lack of space & funding for books in schools.
But please, PLEASE, don't worry about the costumes.
Me: I am thoughtful, dispassionate and not easily swayed.
Also me: [on finding two wrapped sweets in with my contact lens order] This tremendous company shall have my loyalty until death.
*deep breath* I wrote about BBC One’s new drama Ridley Road, and the difficulties of playing and casting Jewish characters, for

@Baddiel
for pointing out the importance of having the conversation. And do watch the show. It’s great.
A tiny wave hello from our new baby boy.
After a day and a night in intensive care and another night in special care he's finally with us on the ward. Hope to come home soon. Thank you, wonderful wonderful NHS.
Daughter’s Covid bubble has just popped. That’s it for this school year. No sports day, no celebrations, no proper goodbyes. Kids all weeping. I know it’s small, in the grand scheme, but for them it’s huge and I just feel dreadful for them all.
@LissaKEvans
I semi-accidentally drank a bottle of wine on a full dose of motion sickness pills a couple of weeks ago and had the best night’s sleep in years. (I do see this is not a long, or even short term solution.)
Thing is, obviously this is the very extreme end. But any time a bloke says in interview (and they say it a lot) ‘I could never do what my wife does’ that’s the socially acceptable version of this. And it drives me INSANE
Twitter! I've got to name a bad male character. Anyone want to give me a - fairly unassuming - first name of someone you don't like? (No one famous or with a weird name.)

Had a row with my daughter earlier over whether someone had knocked at the door. I said the noise was just me clattering in kitchen. To prove it I opened the front door and shouted THERE’S NO ONE HERE right in the face of the small woman from next door who’d come to get a parcel.
For those asking, the swimsuits are from Batoko. They are a small Uk company that recycles plastic waste into swimsuits. Do get on their mailing list for discounts and sample sales!

Hey, fun game! The Gringotts exhibition on the Harry Potter studio tour opens tomorrow. I’ve hidden the press shot among three anti Semitic cartoons published in Nazi Germany. See if you can spot it!!
Me at 5.30am: I just want to go back to sleep. But I guess if I’m awake I could use the time to think out some work?
My brain: Yay! ok let’s list every mistake you ever made starting in 1985
Me: WHAT
My brain: OK 1983
Back in 2020 the brilliant

Here’s a thing. (I’ve had some wine.) Seven years ago I was on the post natal ward after a really really shitty birth and I read all your tweets about
#Eurovision
and they cheered me up NO END. I always think of that night, every year. 💞
To the woman who just stopped me in M&S to tell me I really ought to do something about my crying baby and that it's just cruel isn't it, now there are two of us crying! So well done you!
