Lynching scholar here. Don’t watch the lynching. It shapes and forms you. We know that police violence is an inevitable and brutal element of the system. Yes, it is evil. Invest your time in the material and political support of your neighbor as resistance. Eat. Sleep. Love.

Historical hint: if someone refers to a "race riot" from 1880 to 1930, what they're referring to is a mass lynching in which some Black people defended themselves.

You know how I know we’re not a “Christian nation”? Because if Christians orchestrated widespread genocide and racialized chattel slavery, building their land and wealth on human death and exploitation…there would be a whole lot of enthusiastic repentance and reparation.

Capitalism is fundamentally about self-interest and ultimately hoping that the self-interest of others incidentally coincides with yours. Christianity is fundamentally about the denial of self-interest. Like…it’s not actually a debate. They’re different political economies.

Jesus didn’t spend a lot of his time and energy trying to convince the religious leaders that the blind were blind, that the poor were poor and that the oppressed were oppressed. He just set folks free. Go and do likewise.

"Laws can't save people. Only Jesus can!" MLK: It may be true that the law cannot change the heart, but it can restrain the heartless. It may be true that the law can’t make a man love me, but it can restrain him from lynching me, and I think that’s pretty important also.

Historical note: in 1880, James Webster Smith, the first Black cadet in West Point's history was found gagged, bound and beaten with his ears slit. The other cadets said he did it to himself. Also, Black people don't publicly hang themselves on trees. Not a thing. Ever.

When we refer to racialized chattel slavery as an unqualified evil from the root to the fruit, we are not "imposing a foreign moral standard to people outside of our time." We are repeating the words of those who suffered under it. "They were people of their time" won't cut it.
