Normalize NOT doing this: Me: Yeah! I want to be a surgeon, will take me about 9-10 years post grad to be complete with training! Person: Wow?! You know how old you’ll be when you’re finished, near 40?! Whether I’m training to be a surgeon or not, I’ll be almost 40 in 10 yrs

the second one 178/95. At this moment I knew I had developed preeclampsia with severe features and had NOT been previously taken seriously about my concerns. The doctors on call couldn’t believe the blood pressures were real and that possibly this could be from my anxiety.

After many hours of waiting in triage until my room was available my blood pressure was never rechecked. Finally I made it to my room on the floor and my nurse took my blood pressure after about a 6 hour span since the normal ones. My first blood pressure read was 176/ 100,

signs that the imminent danger of preeclampsia were near, and I was right. After getting the news of wanting to send me home, I called my personal OB and told her my concerns that I do NOT want to go home and I need to stay at the hospital for more monitoring and she agreed it

**My Birth Story, Long Post Alert, But Very Important Read** At my 38 week OB appointment my blood pressure was elevated to 140/100 and my urine dipstick revealed protein 3+. I do have history of controlled hypertension, but prior to this OB visit all of my BP had been normal.

that it was NOT worth the risk of gambling another week of waiting. My OB told me don’t leave and called over to the hospital and advocated I stay to the on-call OB attending. A few minutes later the on-call OB attending, a white female, came to talk to me and tried to convince

me that I didn’t need to be admitted even after voicing my concerns and mentioned a long wait time I would have for induction since I had no preeclampsia symptoms in which I said was perfectly fine as I wanted to make sure I and Sydney were safe. At this point for my concerns, I

The OB on call for the hospital (NOT my personal OB) advised I be discharged as everything was “fine” and we could hold off on induction of labor until 39 weeks. I had this gut feeling that although on paper clinically everything looked “fine” that my body was giving forewarning

My OB made her concerns of probable imminent preeclampsia and to head to L&D triage to be evaluated and most likely admitted for induction of labor. Fast forward after being evaluated in triage my BP had intermittently normalized, my workup labs were normal.

Yes. On National Doctor’s Day while going to see a consult in the ED a nurse mistook me for a custodian and asked for an item to clean up with. With my physician badge on around my neck and this nice pin the hospital gave us. Happy National Doctor’s Day. 🙄

I need to learn how to feel accomplished. When family and friends congratulate me I find myself saying, “I’m just..”statements. I think in medicine we’re always comparing ourselves to our peers and don’t realize how many amazing things we’ve done.

Ah, yes! I remember when I first saw @callie_mt at a Meharry AWS panel as a MS1. She was a Meharrian, trauma/burn surgeon, mother, and oh so kind. I had my first OR experience with her on a debridement and skin graft case. I was so nervous and excited at the same time. 1/2

I know it might not be big to most, but I successfully presented a patient on Trauma ICU rounds today. No interruptions, or “you have forgotten”, and no awkward pauses in between. I was smiling behind my mask when the senior and attending said it was well presented. 🙂

As matching is a stressful time for everyone and my heart breaks for those who did not match, I would ask applicants to not say things like “if I was an URiM or female I wouldn’t be in this position”. Everyone out here is doing their best, there is no need to blame others.

Not a preceptor asking the specialty I’m applying into and then his words verbatim, “Not a good choice in my opinion, have you checked the job market?!” Then he went on for like 5 mins about how it’s a poor choice and giving examples. I wish people would stop doing this.🙄

What I’ve really noticed here at my sub-I for the past two weeks, a supportive and teaching driven environment can really help you become confident and bloom. I’ve learned so much in so little time by people who honestly want the best for me. That’s solid. 🙂
