Let’s be clear on something: PEOPLE chose to commit these heinous acts. PEOPLE attacked and injured a player, official and cameraman. PEOPLE used the game to enact violence. The players didn’t. Our League didn’t. Football didn’t. Condemn these PEOPLE but do not crucify the sport.

Trust that the irony of this isn’t lost on me, but after covering four AL Grand Finals, my all-time favourite happened to be in 2016 between Adelaide United and Western Sydney. Even though it was played at a non-football stadium in Adelaide Oval, the atmosphere was unbelievable.

Not sure what the overall consensus is amongst fans but if I bought a member’s ticket at a football club that I love for a season that’s just started & I’ve watched 70% of staff being stood down & players receiving pay cuts to keep their club alive, I’m NOT asking for a refund.

We’ve seen clubs on receiving end of poor decisions time and time again but the point of the VAR is to ensure that doesn’t happen. The technology is not to blame, the interpretation is. As far as I am concerned, the VAR has been a failure this season.

On this day four years ago, Croatia defeated Denmark on penalties to progress to the quarterfinals. The beautiful game hit home on so many levels at this tournament. I remember calling my mum and dad and we were all in tears when we qualified for the final. Unforgettable ❤️
