@neilhimself Ah, I remember him well, ten feet tall, he was, we had to knock out the lintels above the bookshop doorway just to fit him inside for a signing, and the fires in his eyes made all the books smoulder, alarming the local fire brigade.

I still remember buying these every month, was becoming ever more enchanted with @neilhimself et al's Sandman, but Midsummer Night's Dream is where I fell irrevocably in love with the series. Stories within stories, myth within myth, & Charles' glorious artwork. Perfect.

Disaster, a fab arts venue with multiple spaces & studio space for all sorts. Have done book events here, recorded podcasts, enjoyed art shows, stage performances, comics festivals. Dreadful to lose all of this...

@neilhimself @GreatDismal 70s and 80s my primary and secondary schools both had the very old desks with inkwells and the lift-up lids, and a rich history of layers of words carved into the wood. Wood never replaced, just re-varnished each summer, preserving the graffiti in amber

@helengrantsays @hellotorifletch When I was at college in early 90s the younger students were into a 70s revival, thought themselves very daring. Friend who was a lecturer looked at them one days & said "you know that's pretty tame compared to some of what we actually wore in the 70s". They were so deflated.

@ProfFrancesca Some people on phone are in a bubble where they clearly believe nobody else can hear them. On bus a woman had similar loud, speaker-on conversation all about intimate details of her mother's health status. Whole bus could hear, her mother would have been mortified if she knew!

@AOC when I was a kid in the 70s my mum & most others I knew worked, at least part time, to help the family make ends meet, & somehow still took care of the kids, meals, washing & generally were the heart of the family. Mums are superheroes.
