For those who think kids should be exposed to ‘germs’, a useful article:
“Almost no virus is protective against allergic disease or other immune diseases. In fact, viral infections mostly either contribute to the dev;t of those diseases or worsen them.”
It’s interesting that we talk about minimum wage & the poverty line but never discuss maximum income or limits to wealth? Why do we allow people to become rich enough to buy every level of govt & indeed bring down civilizations? And yes, that’s actually happening
The left's failure on Covid is, of all of the left's failures of the last few years, one of the most disturbing to me.
It's a horrifying confirmation of just how empty the left's talk about concern for workers & those less privileged & abled is. Silence on a libertarian hell.
Again! A relative went to a friend's in-person funeral in Vancouver 8 days ago. Many who attended caught Covid. She was the only person in an N95 (didn't eat or drink). This is the 2nd superspreader event she has attended, & both times remained unscathed, thx to N95.

Just FYI, we are in the middle of a major Covid wave right now. I'm surrounded by people with positive Covid tests. If you have "cold" symptoms you should check. With every Covid infection your chance of Covid goes up, even if your symptoms are "mild," & you can pass it to others
Heart disease and stroke are 33% higher than expected, vs. before the pandemic
Public health isn't going to tell you this, but actuaries will.
Also note the other main two causes of excess deaths have also been linked to Covid: respiratory infections & diabetes
#bcpoli
#cdnpoli
For ages 50-64, deaths involving cardiovascular diseases such as heart disease and stroke were 33% higher than expected.
Other causes with significant excess deaths at ages 50-64 were acute respiratory infections (43% excess) and diabetes (35% excess).
There's an intense debate underway: is the disordering of the immune system after Covid (Long Covid & more) permanent or not? Too early to prove 100% definitively, but see this 18-year-followup of SARS1 survivors.
More than *half* still show damage.
Day 12 of hospital-acquired Covid. This thing is not "mild." The lung congestion feels very close to pneumonia (I've had pneumonia so I know). Crippling exhaustion. BC public health is criminally negligent for downplaying this virus esp given Long Covid. PS got a booster in April

Hi
@CBCSunday
, I was hopeful when I heard you start your show with 'We thought we'd have a break from Covid this summer but we find ourselves in a 7th wave thanks to the BA.5 variant." Then you said 'we'll be joined by renowned virologist Angela Rasmussen," who minimizes Covid...
Repeating because I can't believe what's going on: the health system is crumbling around us, but we're not masking in classrooms, transit and public spaces even though it's 100% proven to reduce Covid levels and reduce the crisis in our medical system. Why?
#bcpoli
@KarinaZeidler
And to anyone, left or otherwise, who imagines the pandemic is over despite this impressive collection of stats that it is now more deadly than it has ever been and disabling millions, I can't help you.

I'm just curious what most British Columbians think is causing BC Ferries to keep cancelling multiple sailings, Air Canada to cancel 9500 flights this summer, & ER waits of up to 16 hrs?
Obvs not something that could be prevented by an indoor mask rule, eh

Hey people:
An elderly family member doesn't feel comfortable asking a few dinner guests to rapid test when they arrive. She asked me if I'd come over early & run a fun rapid test station (cocktail while you await results) so she doesn't have to. So I will.
Such a good idea.
Why weren't Vancouver's roads salted? We had plenty of warning. Black ice everywhere, and check out this line of stranded buses.
Friend just now on Ken Sim failing at another core service: "Slipping and sliding on the ice is swagger"
#vanpoli
Just heard that at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital, Covid cases just doubled overnight - and that's before all the test results are in. They expect it to go higher.
We now also have immune-escaping variants rising exponentially in N. America. Where is the mask mandate?
#bcpoli
For one thing, the union move't got its very start on occupational health and safety issues.
Also, interesting read:
"Sewer Socialists of the 1900s knew how to make healthy cities (we can learn a lot from them)" by

I’m a rural BC hospital taking an elderly relative to ER. No masks on staff & visitors but aggressive efforts to make everyone sanitize their hands, despite the fact that the diseases helping to crash the health system are airborne. We are truly living in an age of disinformation
@IPACCanada
And... we both got Covid. The hospital is the only place we've been indoors. My relative got it (probably when unmasked HCWs treated her after taking her mask off) and then I got it from her. Well done, BC health system. You made an elderly patient sicker than she already was.
My elderly family member, whom I kept free of Covid for 3+ years but who finally caught in in an unmasked BC hospital last week, is very sick on Day 9. Rapid test still shows a bright red line. For health issues she can't take Paxlovid. She's in a rage at you,
@adriandix
.
#bcpoli
Well, a relative's cataract surgery was just cancelled. The surgeon called & the entire nursing team has Covid (theory is they share an unmasked break room). There's no replacement team, & she can't be rescheduled until nursing team tests neg & the surgical backlog is dealt with.
A friend's whole family has Covid. They're on Days 10, 8 & 2, all still testing +. The mom on Day 10 is a HCW who was orig told by her workplace to go back after 5 days, tho still + & sick. One of her sick colleagues had a + test on Day 15, & her workplace *accused her of lying.*
Viruses aren't like calisthenics for your immune system. They're more like smoking, drinking & a concussion for your immune system.
Viruses are linked to serious autoimmune diseases:
Epstein Barr (->mono) -> MS
Covid -> diabetes
ME/CFS, more
Genital warts -> cancer
Etc
!!!
From a BC doctor just now when I asked why so many doctors are finally speaking out this week:

It is because measles vanished for so long that people have forgotten how deadly it is? Is it because it has a funny name, or has red spots?
It is a severe disease that can lead to hospitalization & long-term complications - developmental disability, neurological conditions, &..

Let's just call this "it's okay to go back to work after 5 days of Covid!" thing what it is:
1. Arbitrary and unscientific
2. A punitive labour practice
3. A strategy that inevitably increases infection in the community & makes workplaces unsafe.

Doctor I know:
"I was called in to cover a doc sick with COVID today. While here I learned I have to cover a different doc tmrw, also sick w/ COVID. I just treated a little girl with pneumonia secondary to COVID. Meanwhile I keep hearing on the news etc about COVID being gone"
It feels surreal - Twilight Zone-level surreal - that a majority of British Columbians are v upset about the collapse of our medical system (long ED waits, hospitals closed), while a majority of BCers also feel the pandemic is over.
Guess Covid had nothing to do with it?
#bcpoli
Almost exactly a year ago I learned of 3 superspreaders in restaurants, incl. a family party that infected many of my relatives. I tweeted about it & Jody Vance, who had just told a large radio audience that restaurants were safer than home for Xmas dinner (bec plexi), jumped in.
I am completely surrounded by close friends - who are all very careful - getting Covid for the first time in the pandemic. We are seriously in the thick of it. Everyone blithely going around maskless in indoor public spaces - would you jump off a cliff if the PHO told you to?
Just so we're clear, "personal responsibility" isn't public health. It's some form of private health. It's what you'd get if Ayn Rand ran BC "public" health.

Just with my mother in a Van hospital ER for 6 hours (she's ok). 6 hours for an 80+yo is not OK. An hour of it she was stashed in a tiny room with obvious Covid patient, & the ER was *packed* with those. Staff all v nice but not a single nurse, doc or HCW in an N95. WTF.

Still in shock that a BC journalist, when asking the acting premier why the BC govt wasn't more prepared for the

#bcpoli
Just to summarize, Vancouver is about to elect as mayor a man who couldn't name the provincial or federal housing minister when asked, who runs a predatory business, has as his quasi-patron a billionaire who loves Ayn Rand, & is involved with the creepy Landmark thing.

"They are now making it difficult to test people in hospital - they're refusing to authorize PCR tests on people who become symptomatic. There's a NAAT PCR machine in ED but inpatient can't use it without special authorization.."
Another spreader event in my extended family. A guest at a small dinner party asymptomatically infected 4 others. Everyone said they didn't need to test beforehand as "we're all careful." I don't understand people's resistance to self-testing before entering another's house.

The Govt of Canada's recent report on Long Covid contains stark facts you've never heard from Bonnie Henry & Adrian Dix.

@CBCSunday
Who at
@CBCSunday
chose Angela Rasmussen for a CBC show with an audience this large? Is this your way of chasing a false "middle" in the Covid discussion? There's science & there's denial - it's not your job to find some "middle" between these.
It is no doubt a more difficult task than ever for journalists as certain ID MDs and virologists have built an enterprise downplaying the science and real world evidence, and precautionary principle. They are consistently wrong and shouldn’t be platformed.
@frozen
So first, newscaster dude says 'less severe' which she didn't even say & she doesn't correct him, and meanwhile both of them ignore the fact that more transmissible means this thing is far more severe for our health system, as we already found out with Omicron. WTF is going on?
@IPACCanada
And even though I'm in one of the highest risk groups, I can't access Paxlovid from the system that sickened us, even though people my age can access it all over Canada and the developed world - while BC restricts it the most.
So children are disposable too?
The lack of reaction to the paediatric crisis in BC is chilling.
Does no one find it odd that unlike in Ontario, no doctor from BC's Children's Hospital has called for protections for children, like masks generally or at least in schools?
#bcpoli
@CBCSunday
CBC recently improved its reporting on Covid, or so we thought, by admitting that as many as 50% of cases can lead to
#longcovid
, but then you choose as your experts people who controversially downplay the known risks of repeated infection. Why?
BC had to throw out about 700,000 vaccine doses.
BC paid Penny Ballem $760,000 to run BC's botched & inexplicably delayed vaccine rollout.
Perhaps if Ballem repaid us a dollar for every dose she threw out, we'd be about even.
Colossal waste and mismanagement.

This is both unscientific and dangerous. It minimizes Covid risk without taking any responsibility for the consequence of readers feeling newly lackadaisical about Covid, predictably getting infected & then helping crash our health systems. The article should be retracted.
BC parents:
BC health agencies originally said 2 kids died of flu. Then admitted it was from secondary bacterial infections.
But when kids die of secondary bacterial infections with Covid, these aren't counted as Covid deaths.
Q: So why do they call these flu deaths?

Oh come on. Regardless of how anyone feels about Butts right now, that was an invasive, cheap paparazzi level stunt. How about doing actual journalism.
We can pretend everything is fine and it's okay to catch Covid 10x but it's a bit like denying climate change. Doesn't have a lot to do with the developing scientific consensus.
BC media letting the far-right call the NDP "radical" (ha!) unchallenged puts the lie to its claims of "balance." That's how media helps move the Overton window right.
