I’ve only gone and rowed an ocean!! We stormed across the seas in an incredible 40 days, 11 hours and 25 minutes. We arrived at the perfect moment too - sundown on a Friday night! We are

and we are so proud of ourselves. £53k raised & counting.
My son just asked me what a cougar was, and I said “an older woman who likes younger men as boyfriends”.
He said, “I meant the animal”
I’ve been a tabloid journalist too long.
I’ve known Kath for 30 years. She is not transphobic and this is the most appalling witch-hunt. If Kath loses her job, where do we go from here?

Love this story - the boy who met Meghan Markle and hit the headlines when he said she was beautiful is off to Cambridge. In fact all those kids on that school twitter account are making me feel a bit teary.

It was my son’s best friend’s birthday so I thought where would two ten years like to go? Obvious answer? The cemetery! Inspired by reading

Rachel - I walked into the OUBC boathouse at Wallingford the other day and saw all the Blue Boat crew plaques on the wall. “Ooh where’s mine,” I thought. Guess what?! Only the men have plaques. Apparently this is being corrected, I was told. But still - WHY.
Nothing like asking people to buy a paper to bring out the Harry and Meghan trolls, whose main message seems to be that the death of journalism is preferable to a privileged couple having their privileged lives questioned every now and again.
Since he was fired, Phillip Schofield has done set up pics with his 85 yr old mum, put out a statement accusing others of holding a grudge and now done chats with the Sun and the Beeb. These simply aren’t the actions of someone who wants to stay out of the news cycle.
Wish I could credit someone with this “Have a W

It has been a while but I do have a PERSONAL NEWS klaxon (and it is personal, not professional). Recently I wrote about The Mothership - the crew of mums rowing across the Atlantic. Well, one of them dropped out, and I have stepped in. Yes, I’m doing the

My uncle died last night, a month after my aunt. Just short of their 65th wedding anniversary. He held on for her cremation and then left us. Here he is with my mum and aunt. They are all gone now. I’m heartbroken.
Just found this pic of my favourite ever

It’s been an emotional day all round - three years since my sculling partner Teresa was diagnosed with bowel cancer, and today we won Gold in the WD2x. Deservedly she got a mention in today’s write up!
Lightning never strikes twice - unless you were at the British Rowing Masters Championships today! 🏆
Bright sunshine amidst the rain brought out plenty of smiles on the medal pontoon after a great, if eventful, day of racing.
Today's report 👇
Like bloody clockwork. I don’t like to criticise fellow journalists but is it possible for news organisations to move on from the “he seemed like a nice guy” trope? Show some bloody responsibility. Two dead women every week. This week three - probably more.
Can we once and for all dispense with this tedious "But he always took the bins out and said hello" commentary, as if there was a contradiction here that needed explaining.
Violent men ARE "nice guys".
They're nice to everyone but the women they abuse. That's the whole point.
Whatever your position on this issue, all

members who voted do need to know the result of the vote, or failing that, the date of when we will be told the result of the vote. Otherwise why ask us to vote in the first place?

Twenty years ago my Aussie flatmate Sarah had a raucous birthday bash. Enter Frenchman Fred, fairly late on in proceedings. Here we are celebrating two decades and two kids together at Nest in Hackney last night.
I’ve interviewed three women about their mesh surgery this week. It’s so shocking. Again we go back to women not being listened to. Told their symptoms are in their head. Not given adequate post-natal care. Denied c-sections if they were needed. Miracle cures over physio etc...
I went to Spain with no job in 1995 and got one, my husband came here with no job in 1999 and got one. Freedom of movement was an amazing thing. My children are the lucky ones who will still have it. An awful thing to take away from UK citizens
#freedomofmovement
After many years of campaigning, I am delighted the Immigration Bill which will end free movement on 31st December has today passed through Parliament.
We are delivering on the will of the British people.
My parents had exactly the same birthday. They would have been 89 today. I’ve probably posted this pic before, but honestly, it brings me so much joy when I look at it. True love. To Ronnie and June, much missed.
Stories, stories, stories: I need some incredible real life stories for the nationals. Triumph over tragedy, amazing DIY home makeovers, mums doing amazing (or controversial!) things etc. I’m all ears! Please email lebby

A 45 min power walk in Finsbury Park this am got slightly more surreal when I saw an elderly couple with a two metre long pole they’d constructed poking people to remind them to keep apart.
Go to France in my own car, perfectly safely, to stay in my own house, but end up on the red list? Or stay here on Plague Island, and catch the Delta variant just popping down the road to the shops. Decisions, decisions. What a bloody shit show.
Macron yesterday: “The health system won’t hold unless there is an economy to support it, but nothing is more important than human life. We could do nothing and adopt the idea of herd immunity ... in the short term this would mean... possibly 400,000 deaths.”
I interviewed Captain Tom’s daughter before Xmas. She told me how ageist and sexist it was for trolls to assume she was making her dad do things he didn’t want to do. Barbados was top of his bucket list and it was legal to go when they did. Some of the comments on here are vile.
1/ We're increasing the support to the self-employed from 40% of trading profits to 80% for November.
SEISS is calculated over 3 months so this increases the total grant from 40% to 55% of trading profits for November to January and the max grant increases to £5,160.

Our industry needs massive support. Please listen to Neil and add a paper or mag to your essential shopping list. The equivalent online sites will struggle too without the print revenue.
#buyapaper
The newspaper industry is in massive trouble. Ad spend has plummeted and many journalists are being ‘furloughed’ or just fired. Reporting is vital in our society - arguably now more than ever. If you’re passing a shop on your walk today, please

Just want to share, as my daughter fleeces me out of pots of cash for next week’s “prom” that I really hate the word prom. It is a total Americanism. Proms have nothing to do with us. Bring back the sixth form dance/disco!

I love this period for one week every four years when suddenly the whole country’s focus swivels to rowing! It’s a great sport all year round guys - get involved!

While we are all inside, there has never been a better time to subscribe to a mag or newspaper. Journalists are working their arses off to bring you breaking news, practical advice, recipes and fun stuff and print publications will need your support.
We’ve said goodbye to the sunshine and are now back in the UK. I cried on the plane so the readjustment process to normal life looks like it might take a while!! But anytime I feel like riding the waves again I just have to close my eyes and dream.

I’ve been getting used to this view again for a few weeks as I’m back at Lower Thames St - with a new role as CEO of the Health Lottery, focusing on the stories of good causes funded thanks to our players. Exciting to be back in an office in the heart of the City!
A morning no make up selfie. Just over four weeks until I embark on the challenge of a lifetime, aged 50. Just time to get a bit more training in!

Half way through Dry January and as usual when I give up booze, I haven’t lost any weight, I don’t suddenly have the skin of a 16 year old and I don’t leap out of bed completely refreshed in the morning. I just don’t have a hangover some mornings. That’s it.

Last night I met a new neighbour, who’s moved into my brother’s old house, due to a delivery mix up. We were both wearing old rowing tops. The perfect meet cute if I was 25 and single. Then I turned around and remembered I had a hot water bottle stuck down the back of my jeans.
We got our entire 1994

While everyone else was glued to the TV, I had to go rowing! Racing tomorrow at

with my sister
@AnnabelEyres
for the first time ever, in a crew of US/UK Olympians (bar me!). My dad would love it.
New stats out today show what a devastating impact Long Covid is having on survivors of the virus. I spoke to
@JasmineHayer
about her battle for a diagnosis and her project Hidden Voices, which tells the stories of Long Haulers like her:

It sounds fantastic Rachel. Here is a pic of my grandmother rowing in a regatta in Pune, India pre WWI. We’re all standing on the shoulders of these giants - women who strived to compete and be taken seriously.
Winner in the 2x at Poplar. Fourth out of five in the singles - nearly caught the masters E lady with her 13 second head start but not quite. Teresa zoomed past me at some point! But very happy considering that’s my first 2000m multi lane singles race ever!!
Had a rare but effective mum moment today when I forced a bunch of teens going to their prom/school disco to eat a bunch of bagels and suddenly realised they were all starving but prepared to drink through. Hopefully my intervention proves useful! Here is my gorgeous daughter
Agreed. While I’ve been lucky to have been able to carry on earning, it was quite something to realise that after 30 years of being a good citizen, I had no back up but myself. Simply unacceptable that so many have fallen through the cracks.

It’s my last day as CEO of The Health Lottery. I loved leading its transformation, launching the new website & subs product, telling the stories of the people whose lives we transformed & handing over large cheques! Off to find my next adventure, be it land, sea or river-based!
Perhaps in 2021 we can see an end to sympathetic headlines about those poor men who have inconveniently had their lives ruined by murdering women. Spector, Pistorius et al

The teen did an Easter presentation: “why you should allow me the mini fridge in my bedroom”. Presumably so so she can stay in her room for 24hrs a day rather than just 22.
So
@RishiSunak
says it’s a deliberate policy decision to exclude the excluded? We don’t earn 200k p.a, Rishi. I’m “newly” self-employed (Nov 2018) and therefore there is no support system for me. Why is that a deliberate policy decision?

Really sad news about Shane Warne. Am no cricket expert but from a showbiz journo perspective he gave us one of the best stories ever when he started dating Liz Hurley. The most unexpected but wonderful couple for a while.
Last night on dry land for six or so weeks. You can follow my adventures on

Another momentous achievement for 2022 - I have written my first book, a memoir for a wonderful 92 year old sailor and surgeon. Needs a final proofread and will have more edits, but am sending to the family this week. Have just collated it all into one doc. More champagne?!
My cousin unearthed this pic of my aunt, who I’ve always been told I look like. This is like looking at a pic of me, put through some sort of incredible 1950s makeover. My mum probably made that dress too.
Editors’ incredibly long threads to freelancers on what makes a good pitch can be summed up like this. Good idea which only you can write? Commission! Good idea which anyone can write? Possible commission but does need a good pitch. Bad idea? No commission! The end.
Funny to think that this time last year, on my 50th, I had no idea I was going to row an ocean later that year. This is what 50 looked like - I wonder what 51 will bring?
I’m missing my friend Miranda today. We bonded when Wills married Kate, planned our Diamond Jubilee street party, and this pic is Harry & Meghan’s wedding day. She died of bowel cancer 2 years ago this week. It’s why these moments are special - as much about community as Queen.
This epic thing happened - we won the dead heat by two foot. Not far enough for a free start but a moral victory and a once in a lifetime (I hope!) battle
#theboatrace
I’ve deserved it. Made it to the final, came 5th, vast improvement on last year, no disasters, racing against former world champ gold medallists, as is the way in masters rowing. Onwards and upwards!
