@abi_carey A large number of women are survivors of sexual violence. It's good practice to ask women, therefore, about their preferences. A lot of research, including my own, highlights this as important. As for men, I see no reason not to ask. But this is a false equivalence.

Proud to be wearing this today. I've lived in Scotland for over 12 years, raised a family here and now work for the NHS here as a nurse. Very proud to be a Queen's Nurse and wear the @QNI_Scotland thistle ๐Ÿด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ณ๓ ฃ๓ ด๓ ฟ

Here's to 2023 being the year of #FairPayforNursing & getting our NHS back on track. As demands continue through winter in an understaffed & underresourced NHS, risks mount & more people are failed. All of this is a political choice. But nurses are pushing back. #NurseStrike

โ€œItโ€™s utterly disgraceful that he [Barclay] would prefer to use money to challenge nurses than to pay them, at a time when those nurses are struggling to pay their bills. He is using public funding, patientsโ€™ money, to challenge nurses through the court.โ€

What Brand is essentially saying is that five unconnected women with whom he claims to have had consensual sex... Are now part of a mainstream media conspiracy plot against him? Is that really more believable to people than the banal reality of how common rape and assault is?

Nearly half of nurses in England are planning to quit or thinking about it. 90% come into work when sick due to guilt over staffing levels. A majority say they are burned out and many struggle to make ends meet. Nursing is in crisis.

Actually, we do precisely this in the VAWG sector under sch 9 (part 1) of the Equality Act 2010 The act allows for exclusions that are a proportionate means to achieve a legitimate aim We can exclude all men, on this basis, from working with survivors of sexual violence 1/8

Nicola Sturgeon's core point from today's Q&A, on the trans prisons row - "there is no other group in society where we accept that the actions of an individual somehow forms a justification for taking away rights from the whole group, or not according rights to that group"

Completed my first revalidation. What an incredible first 3 years it has been! Despite many challenges including a pandemic, switching to home ed for my youngest - I've managed to complete an MSc, progress to Band 7 & co-author several papers. Here's to many more years ahead!

This is an insult to the knowledge, skill and experience of both doctors and nurses. Why wait for a GP appt or sit for hours in A&E when you could just.. Self-refer based on doing a bit of googling. Amazing. What could possibly go wrong? #FairPayforNursing #BMADoctorsVoteYes

Female nurses die by suicide more than any other healthcare professional & the numbers are increasing. Research is needed to understand why but we could begin by looking at the high rates of sexual violence & domestic abuse they experience. #WorldSuicidePreventionDay2023

Nurses are applauded the loudest when they stay "in their place". The "good girls" of nursing espouse that we don't need degrees, that there should be no ANPs or nurse consultants. The applause is to drown out the "naughty girls" & keep our 90% female profession subordinate.

This week I submitted my final masters assignment. Doing this full time as an NQN was already tough going before throwing in kids off school, youngest child with a learning disability and working in a global pandemic... Most proud of myself I've ever been. Time for a rest!

Nursing is a fantastic career, but it's not valued or paid fairly. Nurses are the vast majority of Band 5s. Over 60% experience sexual harassment. Female nurse suicide rates are higher than any other HCP. We don't need more routes into nursing. We need systemic change.

Latest UCAS data shows applications for nursing degrees has collapsed by 26% in two years. Why do you think a career as a nurse is becoming less popular? How can nursing appeal to more students?

Gaslighting isn't limited to 1:1 interactions. Collective gaslighting is when some members of a group harass, mistreat & abuse a person while the rest of the group collude by denying it happens & minimising/justifying it. It can happen in personal or professional groups.

Health & social care staff will no longer accept skirting around the issue of pay. None of these things are a substitute for fair pay. Few of these are achievable without adequate staff, who continue to leave due to poor pay & conditions. #FairPayforNursing #EnoughlsEnough

My beautiful grandmother died this morning, my last surviving grandparent. Her home was a 2nd home to me growing up. I spend most weekends there, called in after school... I was there when they announced the death of Diana & we stood & watched 9/11 unfold on the news together.

Are nurses going to be furious that doctors were given a better pay offer? No, of course not. Doctors should be paid fairly. Are nurses going to be furious that the government value them less than doctors? Sure, why wouldn't they?
