Thanks to the active participation and engagement of all participants, our Conservation Genomics workshop at
#ICCB2023
in Rwanda was a great success!
For those who weren't able to attend, we've made all resources, incl. a test dataset, available here:
Just before the end of the year, we got another paper out! 🎉🎉🎉
It was a rather long process, capturing the thoughts and experiences from all coauthors, addressing how we can do a better job integrating molecular tools into biodiversity conservation:
🧵
Context: there are two semi tame rhinos at the field station in Sauraha, Nepal. During the heat of the day, they love hanging out in the hallways and are horribly in the way of the everyday activities going on in the offices 😅
@ChaiBiskoot29
I was lucky to be a member of Tracy's committee, but it wasn't until I read her article in Science that I understood how inspirational her path has been:
Hi, I'm a wildlife biologist. You may know me from my greatest hits including, "No, I really do not want to hug a lion (or any other wildlife)", "No, I'm not fond of pet cats, especially not the environmental havoc they cause" and "Thanks, but it's no vacation, it's field work".
Hi, I’m a climate scientist. You may know me from my greatest hits including, “No, it’s not a natural cycle,” “Yes, I know it’s been warmer before (and the only reason YOU know is because we scientists told you so),” and “Just because it’s on YouTube doesn’t mean it’s true.”
My former university,
@UniLeiden
, is the oldest university in the Netherlands and has a lot of traditions. For example, when you obtain a MSc or PhD degree you're allowed to write your name on the wall of the Sweatroom. A short thread: 1/5

Shortly after my defense, a friend texted me in all caps to tell me that he actually saw somebody reading my thesis in the train. Like, a real person, reading it, in the wild! I still cannot believe it.
After several trips to the south, I finally made in to the mountains of Nepal 🇳🇵! Stunning views in Upper Mustang, with the Tibetan plateau behind me. We're walking to Lo Manthang tomorrow.
We're planning to organize a 2-day training course on Conservation Genomics, at
#ICCB
in Rwanda. We particularly like to encourage those colleagues who may not have frequent opportunities to participate in such courses. Registration will start soon (through the ICCB website).
@JulesBass6
Yes, but also help your mentees to find their voice, don't "just" rewrite the manuscript. Not implying that this is what is happening here, of course, but I see it often and find it very discouraging and a sign of poor mentorship.
To start the new year off well, we got another paper published! 🎉🎉🎉
We explore the evolutionary history of African bushpigs and their mysterious presence on Madagascar. The study was a team effort, with multiple collaborators, and co-led by
@renzobalb
,
@AnnaBruniche
and me. 🧵

When I landed a postdoc position directly after my PhD, my grandmother said, with clear disappointment in her voice: "you're STILL at the University??" and proceeded accusing me of being afraid of living a real life (presumably she meant finding a husband & having kids, idk).
@hikingwithshawn
To be honest, I find it rude if people play their music in any public space (what makes you think I would want to listen to your music??), but in nature it particularly annoys me.
If you're interested in hearing how we can use
#genomics
to map
#biodiversity
patterns and make this relevant for
#conservation
, consider attending my talk in AD4 (Conservation Planning & Prioritization) today at 16:15.
Will be talking about African mammals! 🦒🦁🧬
#ICCB2023
Registration is open for our 2-day training course on Conservation Genomics, at
#ICCB
!
Note: for the first 2 weeks, registration will be open for our African colleagues only, then the course will open up for all. Participation = free for LIC!
Please RT!
I'm really bad at making announcements and completely forgot who I told this to already, but I'm very excited to join the
@HellerRasmus
lab at
@uni_copenhagen
starting on Monday!
Looking forward to moving to Denmark as soon as the COVID situation allows!
🎉🎉🎉 New paper! 🎉🎉🎉
Check out our paper in
@EvolAppJournal
, in which we assess the current knowledge on the distribution of genetic diversity in the lion & how we can use this to inform conservation decisions such as translocations. 🦁🧬🌍
Very eventful 2 weeks in beautiful
#Rwanda
, with a conservation genomics workshop, an international conference
#ICCB2023
, and some great field trips (including a somewhat close encounter with some elephants 🐘😬). Now on my way back home...
1 January: the most stressful day of the year. Because my dad starts a new bird list and will get very excited over each blackbird and each magpie because "it's the first this year!"...
New paper on human-carnivore conflict in Senegal. This region is severly understudied, and this work by Mallé Gueye fills an important knowledge gap.
Conflicts between large carnivores and local pastoralists around Niokolo Koba National Park, Senegal
If there is one thing I've learned from running Conservation Genomics workshops, it's that after a busy day with tons of information, pizza and a cold beer/soda does wonders to keep the mood high! Looking forward to Day 2!

After one of my proposals was rejected for using a threatened flagship species because "you should use a model organism" (the proposal had a focus on conservation genomics, but OK), I'm just looking at this thread like
After our initial call to improve genetic diversity targets and indicators in the post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework (), we now published a response on how to include effective population size (Ne):
Important discussion!
@sciencewithtyus
The kakapo: an endemic, chubby, flightless parrot from New Zealand, which was almost driven to extinction, but with a lot of TLC is now slowly doing a bit better. Interesting because of: endemism, island effects, risk of invasive species on native biodiversity, super cute!

Very happy this is out!
While traditional methods of studying diets tend to overestimate the contribution of large prey species, diet metabarcoding can pick up smaller species and species for which it is difficult to identify the remains morphologically.
We encountered this beautiful male on our way back to camp in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. We followed him for a few minutes, as he strolled on the road in front of our car, patrolling and marking his territory.

The long flight will be put to good use, to hash out the final details for our Conservation Genomics workshop (ID: 9)! Looking forward to meeting everybody and doing some hands on work on 🐆 genomics!

This quote always resonated with me: "if physicists had to model
electrons that behaved differently when they were hungry,
they would probably be not much ahead of ecologists…”. - CAS Hall.
Lion spotted in Sena Oura, Chad! Years ago,

supported a project covering Cameroon's Bouba Ndjida NP and the connection to Sena Oura NP on the Chad side. Good news that lions are still around!

Also, there are plenty of questions which don't require WGS. I sometimes see perfectly fine manuscripts being rejected because it's "just" microsats. If it's sound and answers the question, publish it!
Our paper "Asymmetrical gene flow in five co-distributed syngnathids explained by ocean currents and rafting propensity" just went online. Check it out here:

Search committees reveal a lot. I once filled in for a colleague last minute, dropped lab work & spent the entire evening reading+assessing materials from ~70 candidates. When I came to the committee meeting the next day, the HR guy looked at me and said: "Ah, the token member".
The plan for the weekend: focus, finish my analyses, submit at least one manuscript.
How it's going: went for a run, cleaned the entire apartment, did laundry, repotted several plants, went to 3 stores trying to find a new stylus for my pickup, and made a hanging herb garden.
A few days ago, in Kathmandu, we celebrated Tibetan New Year. Yesterday, we saw our first wild tiger. It looks like the Year of the Tiger is off to a good start!

Heb je wel eens een regenboog gezien? Rood zit boven, buitenste ring. Dat komt doordat de golflengte van rood licht het grootste is. Niks NWO agenda, maar gewoon 2e klas natuurkunde... 🌈
One of the things I cannot get used to in English, is the diversity of collective nouns for animals. I knew about a gaggle of geese, and a parliament of owls. But a gulp of cormorants? A bellowing of bullfinches?? A flamboyance of flamingoes???

Two bird guides, four mammal guides, and two bottles of gin. Sounds like the team is ready for the field!
Looking forward to visiting Uganda 🇺🇬 for the first time, meeting collaborators and chatting about local biodiversity! 🦁🐗🐘🦒

This was nine years ago already! It was my first trip to Nepal, and I was impressed by the private natural history collections and interesting family histories associated with them. Jokingly I asked our host if he would mind if I'd take some DNA samples.
Update on the moving situation. The poor, skinny guy who walked my 20+ moving boxes up to the third floor and suspected I may have a lot of books in them was right. And I left the heavy ones back home!
@mosquito_chaser
Most of them involve aardvark burrows... Or low hanging tree branches taking off the entire roof (with luggage) of our car. Or a combination of both. More driver malfunctions than vehicle malfunctions, to be honest though...

I once read that what was regarded as the butterfly biodiversity hotspot in the Netherlands was later found out to be the residential area of a retired butterfly enthousiast who just spent an enormous amount of time in the field and reporting his sightings... 😅
I've been camera trapping the backyard in Germany for 3.5 years now. I knew there had to be some pups, but this is the first time I got them on camera! 🤩
Thanks to the most bitter and unconstructive opinion piece I've ever read, published for whatever reason by
@WSJ
, I decided to add my academic title to my Twitter profile.
By the way... "kiddo"??? Wtf?
What a horrible news to read. I have great memories of our visit to Brazil and the tight collaborations with Brazilian colleagues & friends. It's amazing to see the top level research from those institutions. We can only hope that things will change soon. Hang in there! 💪
The Brazilian congress just approved a NINETY-TWO percent cut to the federal science funding. The remaining budget now is...ten million dollars. For the 9th largest economy in the world. I have no words.
Completely unexpected, our friend and colleague,

Wow. I'm sorry to hear that he failed to understand biology, even though he apparently really tried to memorize it (lol). But probably I'm even more sorry that he failed to understand women and education, too.
IUCN Red Listing does not accurately reflect status of lions & cheetah. Major problem: regional differences, like populations going up in intensively managed parks in southern Africa, while (the other subspecies) going locally extinct in Western Africa.
It's always exciting to come across new data sources with some relevance to your work. ACLED has an impressive database of human-human conflicts, which may impact wildlife conservation in the region. I made some maps, showing human conflict and lion range.
#StichtingLeo
As a big cat/wildlife biologist, I cannot stress enough how much I dislike the ridiculous number of free ranging domestic cats and the impact they have on their environment. 😿
