Just survived given a hour-long lesson on #rewilding with 40 inquisitive and enthusiastic 8-9 year olds. I gave them activities for their next lesson and sent them home with stuff to do and things for their parents to read. Hats off to teachers. I couldn't do their job.

The 6 rules of re(al)Wilding: #5 . Work towards a continuum of landscapes. We cannot rewild everywhere/everything. We need a continuum & mosaic of land uses/types from urban to non-intervention wild(er)ness where we can step back entirely & let nature be natural & self-willed.

3 things stand out in this letter: 1) The arrogant primacy of the human 2) No attempt to address the causes of any predator-prey imbalance (i.e. no mention of human modification of land use in favour of livestock and game) 3) whiff of using SBS/SOS as an ecological smoke screen

The #StateOfNature 2023 report makes for sobering reading. While the causes are many, we need to reverse habitat loss to halt declines and create more space (and time) for wild nature to recover. How? #rewilding has to be one answer, with focus on re(al)wilding wherever possible.

The 6 rules of re(al)wilding: #3 Natural succession should be the Favourable Conservation Status (FCS) for #rewilding projects. Nature isn't fully natural when held in stasis at a predefined stage of succession by continual human intervention and interference.
