Yesterday, I was sworn in for my term on the Fairfax County School Board. I took my oath of office on Homegoing, a novel about slavery, which is a frequent target of book bans across the country. We owe it to our students to teach accurate, complete, and contextual history.

We didn’t have these, we had dot matrix lists at my schools. What I do remember is kids being shamed and racking up lunch debt because their parents were struggling. That’s wrong. My day 1 promise is a budget item eliminating all lunch debt in FCPS, and phasing out lunch fees.

I grew up in the deep south. Small towns are being torn apart by gun violence, and the gun fetish perpetuated by @Jason_Aldean creates more victims. No one is seizing your grandpa’s hand-me-down peashooter, but we do expect commonsense background checks and licensing.

Learning about human suffering is inherently uncomfortable to anyone with a conscious. Stamping out lessons on our racial history, because of discomfort, is not the solution. The solution is to meet it head on, learn, grow, and come together.
