My first build series: the 5 string #kantele ! First, you will need a block of a light wood (pine, fir). These a 6x6x8 cm (2 2/8 x 2 3/8 x 3") blocks made from 3 pieces of pine. We start by cutting a 10° angle starting 2 cm/ 3/4" from the left on the line. #woodworking #woodart

It was the faces that did it for me: When I was EMS, their face turned from terror to hope. When I was PD, the entire family's face turned to fear. Couldn't take that.

We had a FINNISH patient tonight... an absolute first for me. He was sleeping most of my shift but I got to chat with him in my pidgin for a few minutes. "Terve! Mina olen Dean," made him smile. Exchanged mostly familial names/villages. I don't which of us was more shy.

Here's an almost uniquely Michigan thing: a Petoskey Stone. It's fossilized coral from the era when Michigan was a salty sea. If I dig around enough at my cabin, I can find a few. It's illegal to own more than 25 pounds of them.

A few towns I'm thinking of visiting during my trip to the Upper Peninsula: Tapiola, Republic, Nisula, Pori, Houghton-Hancock, Paavola, and Pelkie. Here's a restaurant in H-H I'm told has great pannukakku, per one of my ER Docs who has only had pannukakku there.

New episode of "The Mandalorian." They went to a planet called Kalevala. I had to rewind it twice and turn on subtitles to confirm it. The National Epic of Finland is now a Star Wars planet. Considering the arc they set up for Season 3, it's an amusing choice for a planet name.

If you need a side hustle, buy a cheap "watch repair kit" from Amazon, a bulk assortment of watch batteries (don't forget the 371s for Invictas), learn how to open casebacks and charge $10 to do the job. Just made $30 from a guy I met at the bar. Covered my tab and tip.

@onemegawatt Maybe in grayscale. I welcome you the bright colors of the Gákti (costume/heritage) of my reindeer herding ancestors indigenous to Nordic Europe thousands of years before Europeans. The bands of color in each stitch tell which tongue/"tribe" a Saami belongs to.

The Finns used to cycle months by Moons (kuu) in old history. November is "Marraskuu" which means "Death Moon". The trees, crops and flowers die now, only to be reborn in Toukokuu (Sowing Moon; aka May) in 2023.

Tangital rant (me being self loathing): I didn't make much money selling my kanteleet, but I was very, very happy making them. I was/am humbled so many actual Finns (living in the US) bought them, amongst others how found value in my work. I miss making them.

I do plan on making some puukko again this spring provided I can calibrate my forge temperature for "Kauhava" steel (80CrV2). What I'd really like to do is incorporate Petoskey Stones (a fossil only found in Michigan) into the handles. Finnish knife with a Michigan touch.

By some Grace, my little Inari-Finn mother woke up on her ventilator and nodded yes and no to questions from the medical staff just now before going back to sleep. No one ever doubted her Sisu, but this incredible.
