Tonight, I got to hear my moms staff tell her how much her leadership has meant in their lives. Over 90 teachers & staff members came. It was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. I am so grateful for this moment & for the legacy my mom is leaving in all of these educators.

My mom, my mentor, my best friend, my champion rang the bell today. Her chemo treatment is over and she will have a scan at the end of July to make sure she’s all clear. So thankful to know this warrior and learn from her constant fight and joy.

The Board of Trustees approved the hiring of Kristina Woody to be the principal of Mendez Elementary. Mrs. Woody will transition from her position as Attendance Coordinator with SMCISD to become the Mendez principal. Woody joins Mendez with 9 years of school district experience.

Yesterday, I complimented a 2nd grader for reading. Today, he ran to tell me he finished the 122 pgs of his book last night. We talked about his interests & I handed him a brand new book to start. He started reading immediately. What we take the time to notice matters.

A new tradition is starting on Monday. Our 4th grade girl empowerment tea party will be time where girls get to build girls up! I cannot be more excited to see their faces and hear their stories. Thank you @MrsDanielleMurr for making this vision come to life.

The part I am the proudest of is that we did it the right way. We put play & enrichment back into the day. We focused on Tier 1 instruction and make the first time the best time. We flipped intervention to K-2 to make sure 💯 are reading by 3rd. Only going up with this team! 🙌🏽

Méndez was rated an 85 this morning by TEA. We are so proud of what our Strikers have accomplished during a pandemic. Our school moved up 13 points from the last TEA rating. Strikers are brilliant and we are here to tell the world! 🙌🏽

Today I took a full 30 minute lunch and put the “principaling” away to just be a mom. I’m so proud of this kid & I just love him so much. I am so thankful to be a Striker mom. I have endless gratitude for all the staff that surround him & everyone of our kids every day.

We have relocated to New Braunfels. This was my last year at @TanglewoodMS and as a member of @TeamHISD . I am thankful for the 9 years I have spent in this district and the people that have invested in my life. I am filled with gratitude and sending all my HISD family ❤️!

A @houstonpolice officer stopped by our school this afternoon to ask about our school zone. He wanted to make sure officers were where we needed them. He talked to our kids and they thought it was the coolest thing ever. Thank you for being a role model @TanglewoodMS

Six years ago we all graduated from our Ed. Leadership Masters cohort with HISD. We were brought together to do the hard work of making schools great for kids. When I think about where we all are now & what we have already accomplished..it’s truly incredible. Love you all always!

Tonight I made sure I was home in time to eat dinner with my family, have time to play with my boys, read stories, and put them to sleep. Educators- We are known to work 24/7, especially in times like this. Make sure to set boundaries. Balance is important. #StrikeAsOne

Tonight after a great PTO event, I got in my Car to drive home. Just when I thought it couldn’t get any better… I see this book walk made by our librarian Ms. Clift. It is in both English and Spanish and allows families to walk on the sidewalk and read a story together. 💜💜

Every Year our beloved Mr. Rudy decorates our Halls. He is retiring this week and we decided to Decorate the Halls for him this year. Mendez is better because of Rudy’s dedication to our campus as a custodian, leader, kindness ambassador, and friend. We ❤️ you Rudy!

One tradition that I learned from @TanglewoodMS was to always have flowers at the front of meetings. Staff members grab a flower to give to a colleague, and tell them why they are grateful for them. It is now a rhythm here @MendezKids1st . This family is something special. 💜

Yes! Flip the intervention model. Stop pulling “bubble kids” only in the upper grades, and let’s make intervention actually about intervening as early as possible. Better yet.. lets invest and improve in Tier 1 instruction and turn intervention into enrichment.

Something special is going on when teachers can have a REAL conversation about what’s best for kids. They disagree & push each other, but leave knowing they are creating solutions that are best for kids. Adults that put KIDS before adults. That’s what I am looking for.

I’ve never understood the comment “You can only care about kids or teachers” Taking care of teachers IS taking care of kids. The best thing I can do for kids is hire, retain and value the most effective teachers to put in front of them. Teachers ARE the game changers for kids.

I remember being a teacher and just constantly working to break barriers to achievement for my kids. Being a Principal is working to break barriers for teachers to ensure they can do the work for their kids. When we support teachers & build systems, we raise achievement for kids.

Super thankful to be at the Dripping Springs musical festival with my mom. One of the songwriters is an ovarian cancer fighter. As my mom prepares to start this fight again, we are TEAL WARRIOR strong. My mom is a warrior, and I am here for it.

Its the first time that I did no work on break. I was 💯 present with my family, binged Yellowstone, shopped with my mom, read books… This past 3 years has been hard on us all, & we must do a better job of resting. I commit to lead in a way that believes that for all of us.

As I end my day, I am reminded of how very far we have come. We live & breathe Dual Language. We own it. It’s who we are. Tonight in our library SMCISD parents are learning English, & down the hall SMCISD staff are learning Spanish from our DL teacher. This is Méndez. ❤️

“Hire people who know more than you.” It’s been a week back at work with our team and I already feel this 10000000 percent. Today we found a root cause to a performance area that I could have never found alone. We also made an attack plan for 23-24 to fix it. This team yall. 🔥

Can we just take a moment to give it up to the kindergarteners? I have watched 5 year olds adapt to wearing a mask every day, learn how to space out in a hallway, and wash their hands way more than they ever thought possible! Kids are the best.

Ms. Godina has stepped into the Secretary Role and has had to learn 1000 different jobs all at one time. She continues to amaze me with her grit, dedication to kids, and commitment to learn everything she possibly can. Long days and even nights.. shes been there! Thankful!

I love this picture. I had to make Norma and Rudy stop working and come get a root beer float after school. They didn’t want to stop cleaning and keeping us all safe. I can feel the joy in this picture, and they deserve to feel all the joy. They are my hero’s.

This Principal is shutting down the computer, the phone, and anything else work related for a week to spend intentional time with family. Its time to practice what I preach when it comes to self care. It’s hard to do, but family first. “Make the main things, the main things.” 💜

We sent our Lead Custodian off to a promotion at @SMHS_SMCISD today w flowers, affirmation, & hugs. I couldn’t be happier for Valarie. She has taught me SO much about leadership. I am better for knowing her. Take care of our girl @denishapresley . The high school is in good hands!
