My graduation on 10 April @ beautiful Coventry Cathedral. Pure fluke that my sari matched robe colours. Title "Choosing their own partners: South Asian women's lived experiences and responses to intimate partner and familial violence. Thnx to all who helped me on my PhD journeyโค๏ธ

Just got home to these beautiful gifts + so it prompts me to tell the world why I have received them. I was awarded my doctorate this week in South Asian women's exps of choosing their own partners + subsequent exps of domestic violence. I'm now Dr Sandhu!
I'm proud to announce that I have submitted my application to become the next Labour MP for Coventry East.๐ฅ
As a local councillor, I've already beaten the Tories &
increased my majority by 700%
Let's rebuild our communities, our economy and our country.

I'm proud to announce my appointment as Cabinet Member for Education and Skills at Coventry City Council. It is an honour to work with our schools, colleges and universities to put our children and young people at the heart of all we do.
Just catching up with Twitter. Well I WON! I am
@UKLabour

councillor for Earlsdon ward Coventry. A Tory stronghold for 20 years. Humbled by the win. Thanks to

You know Labour does have some good news. Last Thursday
@AntforLabour
won in Earlsdon ward, Coventry, with a 50% turnout + 3rd consecutive win for Labour over the Tories in Earlsdon. I won in 2018, removing their 22 year solid Tory rule in the ward.
@becky_gittins
won in 2019.๐น
I finally feel vindicated. After all these yrs doing research on austerity + showing how it disproportionately impacts BME women, Philip Alston, UN Special Rapporteur on extreme poverty + human rights agrees + cites our work Intersecting Inequalities
UN rapporteur says the government are pretty unconcerned with state of poverty and destiution amongst our communities. How damning is that? I thought a government worked for its people not against them, subjecting then to hardship and misery.
"Open your eyes - there is very real poverty out there."
UN Special Rapporteur Philip Alston says there are people in the UK "living in destitution" and that "government people haven't been out in the field to see what the real circumstances are."
Very proud to be nominated by Community to stand for selection as Labour MP for Coventry East.
Their tireless work supporting workers through industry transitions really resonates with my work with unions when I was a computer scientist in Coventryโs telecomms industry.
Have you been affected by the Windrush Scandal or know someone who has? Do you want to be part of my university study which I'm doing so we don't forget this episode? Do you want to find out more about my research + my values + ethics as a researcher? If so then please DM me.

Out campaigning with

100s turned out in Coventry yesterday. FT says Boris Johnson "has set a dangerous precedent". To those who seek to subvert democracy, does it end here suspending parliament or is it the beginning? What's next banning public protests? We can't let them get away with this.
Interviewed by
@bbcmtd
this morning, expressing my concern for South Asian women and their families. At the core of this story on radioactive isotopes in chapatis fed to South Asian women in our city in 1960s is the issue of consent + the unheard voices of the women + families.
Spoke on the debate on the climate crisis at
#Lab22
, the need to understand and plan for diversity and inclusion in the green agenda.
Let's understand and include the different backgrounds and realities of people's lives.
For me, Diwali's symbolism of "victory of light over darkness, good over evil" is more significant than ever this year as many families face huge food, energy, and mortgage bills.
Let's hope for the good of our country we move into lightness very soon.

When an opposition councillor said the impact of Covid-19 was no more, I couldn't sit on the side-lines.
I had to speak up for our teaching professionals who worked so hard during the pandemic + are still facing huge challenges.
Here's how I defended our teachers. ๐
This means so much to me because it not only reinforces the message that contributions made by women in particular from my heritage must not be lost but also the immense sense of identity and pride I feel of being both British and of Indian heritage.

This woman speaks for many, not only today but also the many this country has ignored and abandoned over the decades. People whom, like she said, have only ever contributed to this country and our society. We need to stand in solidarity with her. Raise her voice!
This woman is incredible and her reality is shared by millions.

I've paid a high price due to honour+ shame. So I get where

Two years ago, Salma Yaqoob ran against me in Bradford West, a campaign that drove me to feeling suicidal. Now she wants to run for West Midlands Metro Mayor.

If you don't have time or inclination to read the myriad reports highlighting institutional racism incl Macpherson report, Lammy Review, Windrush report then just read + take account of what this woman says because she has lived through the worst of it. ๐๐ฝ
This is shocking. How can Britain be a force for good in the world with such revelations!
Thanks
@PreetKGillMP
for continuing to highlight Johal"s cause.
The revelation that it was information passed from Britain to India that led to Johalโs arrest is concerning. Boris Johnson was foreign secretary at the time. The sign-off on the transfer of such information could only have been given by him.
@seyiakiwowo
Well said. Again it's a case of blame the victim. I guess Tony Blair has not bothered to find out what has happened to the windrush survivors. And he was the Labour party leader and prime minister.
