The multifaceted ghosts!
Pirates came up against CTC away having not won in Cape Town since the club’s formation. With their top creator and trusted destroyer out, Jose’s men had to show versatility and prove they have more than one game changer in team.

Orlando Pirates thrashed Royal AM 4-0 but the score line did not fully tell the whole story. In fact the 1st half could have seen Royal AM leading 2-0. However it’s the 2nd half that really saw Pirates dominate and annihilate RAM. Why the contrasting halves?

There’s been a discourse on wether Sundowns is the only team that plays the highest line you’ll see in the PSL. Whilst that is debatable, here’s what a high line can do for you…
Also, Pirates need to quickly secure Mbatha before SSU changes their mind. Never seen such a powerful 8 in the PSL. Highly technical with immense running power.

I’ve said it many times during the previous season that they have to get this window right and it seems due diligence is being done.

Steve Barker’s Terroir!
Stellenbosch fc are slowly becoming a team to beat and this season has proved why they need to be taken serious. 21 games unbeaten, only 5 goals conceded since turn of the year and one of the youngest squads in the league.

Pirates fans have every reason to feel optimistic after the weekend showing against log leaders.
Not only did they wrestle a point after playing over 35mins with 10 men but they managed to outplay Sundowns.
THREAD!
Rewatching the 2nd semifinal. If you are going to spend R50 million on a midfielder, he needs to bring what this guy brings to that Sundowns team. Small frame but don’t let it fool you. An all phases player!
If Jose wins all his remaining games, it will see Pirates hit their highest point tally since the league winning 2011/2012 season. This means Pirates have a league winning coach on their hands, they just happen to be competing against the greatest team in PSL era.
20 - Since drawing 0-0 with Richards Bay in November 2023, Orlando Pirates have scored in 20 consecutive games in all competitions. Only under Gordon Igesund (22 games in 2000/01) have the Bucs gone on a longer scoring run in the same PSL season. Consistency.

Every Pirates player that won tonight was brought in after Jose started at Pitates. Everyone who wanted this man gone needs to look deep into themselves.
Give him the keys!
Sundowns might have hit Pirates 6-0 at some point but the recent losses to the buccaneers brings pain that supersedes that historical win. The next clash is going to be very personal. Sundowns from the top brass to the fans, is hurting.
Nobody knew Allende’s stats or Ribeiro or even Esquivil. Because extensive scouting was done that goes beyond goals and assists. This is how Chiefs and Pirates fell far behind Sundowns.
For a midfielder to score 18 goals and have eight assists in 25 games it's mind blowing. 🤯

ONLY Sundowns can play a line this high. Why? They have a very intimate relationship with the ball. Never seen a PSL club take good care of the ball like they do. Each pass perfectly weighted which reduces 80% of the work for the recipient. It’s beautiful
Anyway I hope the PSL saw the blueprint to beating Sundowns. Pretty much something similar to what Pirates did to them in the MTN8. I hope these two legs will be studied and end the monopoly.
Top 6 best CMs in the league. only Pirates player I’m putting my weight behind this coming season. So much potential in one body. He needs to do right by the ghosts and have the best season of his life.
THE BATTLE OF MBOMBELA
Mamelodi Sundowns is one of the best defensive teams on the continent and their formidability is aided by a solid team structure. The structure is aggressive, fluid and anchored by intelligent players. So How can Pirates unlock this formidable team?

This warm welcome KC coaches are receiving from the media is suspect. Wish Jose was extended the same courtesy when he arrived. Even after winning 4 trophies, media still takes no accountability for causing a stir and propelling the plumber comments. OP fans protected him.
When you have a player that can receive the ball anywhere on the pitch at any angle, you pay that R50 million. Marcelo Allende checks all the boxes of a central midfielder. Press resistant, pnp, can ride tackles, delicate passer and good ball carrier. Key player!
Kapinga to the right and immediately creates a chances for Mofokeng. Then immediately releases Rele again for the goal. Give Kapinga Love and patience. You have a gunslinger on your hands
Out of the 22 that played yesterday,a total of 9 players were in the matchday squad that lost 2-1 to Barcelona. 4 of those players started the match. Sevilla also played Pirates’ reserve team that had a 17 year old nobody’s ever heard of.
Sibisi wants his place back in the starting XI. He’s been impressive to watch from end of last season and this preseason. He’s at the maturity age, I can see why Pirates has faith in him. The fact that he lost his place in the XI and still maintained top professionalism 💯!
This looks like a simple run in to 15 points but add Caf and cup competitions, the whole picture changes.
It’s now or never. Pirates has to show grit and arrogance!

As much as the corrected decision was the right one, no team should hold this amount of power that it changes the referee’s decision. The 1st of June needs none of this. We just need two highly tactical minds solve it like two men. This game holds a lot of implications.
Pirates have a renewed problem in Sha. And one key issue that’s been causing Pirates problems is his movement. It’s hard to contain a mobile CF, especially the one who has good passers behind him. With Monyane playing high, how can Pirates solve this Sha puzzle?
The best double pivot the PSL has ever seen. They were never replaced. After Chansa and Manyisa, I don’t remember Pirates having a CM with a clean ball striking ability. A key attribute that has seen Sundowns win key games through Kekana and Mokoena.
The de-campaigning of Maela has to be the most ridiculous thing you will come across on the internet. A Pirates youth graduate, club captain and top professional who has dedicated himself to the Pirates badge and always availed himself when needed.
The goal came from sustained pressure aided by the high line. Sundowns kept recycling play in the MU 3rd. You don’t pass to move the ball, you pass to move the opposition. Zungu stood in one spot and a passing lane opened up. Top top coaching this. You have to admit.
Gilberto looks uncoordinated and unpredictable with his actions. That makes him very disorienting on the eye especially if you’re used to PSL’s symmetrical dribbling. Top traits! Add language barrier, it makes it interesting to see how his teammates will move in relation to him.
Questions of why the Preseason isn’t set up here in Africa. The weather in Europe right now will more or less be the same in SA when the season commences. This is important for conditioning especially given the intensity Pirates tends to play with. This is how you avoid injuries.
✈️ Orlando Pirates to Spain and Germany
MTN8 and Nedbank Cup champions Orlando Pirates are set to hold pre-season in Spain and Germany from early July.
Last time Pirates dismantled the 3 way coaching at Sundowns and caused a civil war. This time again Pirates sparks a divide within Sundowns fanbase. Some want Rulani gone, some want him to stay, posts are being deleted and Allende at the centre. The monopoly is at the end.
This first passage shows Sundowns losing the ball in MU 3rd before quickly winning it back. They recycle the attack and try again without moving out of their attacking position (opponent pinned). This is possible through key zones occupation.
Most Pirates fans are starting to feel the Sundowns pressure. Although they act like they don’t acknowledge Sundowns but subconsciously, it’s starting to get to them. So what they do is act like before Jose arrived, there was a standard and it dropped after his arrival.

Time for nation 🇿🇦 to get behind Sundowns! This one is bigger than any of us. Let the collective goal outweigh the club badge you represent. Good luck to coach Rulani and his army.
Pirates were 3-0 up at Half Time but things kicked off soon as they got to the changing room. as much as the team was performing, someone was not happy with an individual performance. If you can’t see any positives in that, I’m sorry.
Perks of having a Spaniard as your coach. Juego de Posición! No more than 2 players on the vertical line and no more than 3 on the horizontal line. Look at the coordinated movement creating passing lanes whilst freeing up a man against the press. Sundowns already mastered this.
As far as player quality goes, Sundowns is so far ahead of Pirates. And I want to believe Pirates’ fans acknowledge this too. What bridges the gap is Jose Riveiro. Pirates will have to do lots of out-of-possession drills to capitalise high turnovers. It’s going to be cinematic!
Ndah came on and immediately hit a diagonal ball with his weaker foot. He needs to start next match. I think Jose’s idea is Sesane and Ndah for LCB. Tricky
And when Dlamini came on, he didn’t play where they expected him to. You really have to take your hat off for Jose. You don’t show your cards from the jump. That’s a mind of a coach who knows his squad deficiencies. So he plays to its strengths instead of forcing tactics.
Also by that lineup, Rulani and his technical team predicted the Pirates lineup wrong. They really expected Dlamini to play. As far as game plans go, Jose is 1up.
Pirates has got a lot to do out of possession. 4 passes sliced them open cause everyone was not on the same wavelength. This goes back to their commitment in the press. Some players are still 2nd guessing their actions in unison.
Commitment and trust!
He’s not being totally honest. Pirates and Cape Town City pressed his team high up the pitch to Ronwen Williams. It was 1v1s all over the pitch. It doesn’t get more open than that. Golden Arrows just thought they could press Pirates with a midblock but they found out.
“I wish someone can play like Golden Arrows playing against Pirates, so open. [But] no-one plays against us like that and give us a chance to score seven or eight goals. Nobody does it.” 🎙 Rulani Mokwena.

Turned doubters into believers. Those that wanted him gone are now celebrating a cup double season. Those that doubted his credentials are now laughing at his jokes. When the going gets tough, bet on yourself!
José Luis Riveiro 🙌🏾
Pirates fans like to act like two good players can’t exist in the same position. After Tito came up, they started bashing Dlamini but now he’s balling next to Tito.
That match outlined the variety to this Pirates team and the fact that they won away to CTC without Ndah,Tito,Lebitso or Makhaula should tell you the whole team is starting to buy into Jose’s ideas. Now you can’t plan for a specific XI against them.

Looking at the past two games, it’s gonna be hard to prepare for Pirates from next season. 2nd half, two players switched sides and gaps started to open up.And it has to do with overloading the center.Everyone is fighting in that Pirates team. Hopefully they don’t lose the fire
Speaking to
@ThabisoMosia
, coach Jose says one of the reasons they are increasing the coaching staff is that for a long time too much focus was put on bringing in new players. Now they are bringing in staff that will improve players at Pirates.
Top leaders observe! In the midst of chaos and noise, Rele went to speak to Maela. Xoki tried to address Tito but ended up hot and losing his head. Timm went to diffuse the situation but ended up hot himself. Mind you all these are leaders but different qualities.
Although the overall performances have been questionable, I really admire the grit that Jose has instilled into this Pirates team. You can’t win them all in a pretty manner but get the job done. That template should be enough for African football next season.
For the next 4 matches, expect a chess match from the two coaches. Do not expect fixed line ups. This is however tricky for Jose because he’s playing for CAFCL whilst Rulani got matches to throw away.
If I’m Jose, this is how I set out my team tonight.
Not an honest take coach. You and your technical team got it all wrong. Or rather got outsmarted by your counterpart. There were two teams in that field, the one that won and the one that lost.
🎙️ Rulani Mokwena on the

final defeat:
“I still don’t know what happened, I honestly don’t what happened here... I don’t know how we lost this match, honestly I don’t know. We should’ve won the game – only one team on the pitch. But anyway, it’s football, isn’t it.”
This is right after a missed chance, they get to recycle the attack by circulating play and manufacturing new pathways. No rush of blood or hastiness, just pure belief in the system in place. The high line allows your team to sustain pressure and dominate key zones.
This one is my favourite. Notice how Allende makes a loose pass and MU gains possession to break on the counter. But notice how only 1 player makes forward runs. This is called acceptance. ‘What’s the point of attacking if the ball will end up back in our 3rd’. Mental edge!
Man City backline before the Arsenal match going over some fundamentals.
- Holding the line
- Adjusting body shape to the position of the ball.
- reducing space and time on the ball.
That 2nd goal Pirates conceded is everything you should not do when defending a transition.
South Africa isn’t ready for this one. SA’s top 2 clubs are about to give the nation a blockbuster. Football like you’ve never seen before. This one will set the tone for next season.

Here’s a solid striker and a goal poacher… This guy has been consistent for the last 3 seasons... Please don’t go outside the country looking for strikers who will panic in the middle of the season while there’s a League proven striker in our country!
I love me a good revival arch story. This one is one of them. Thabiso James Monyane! Ran the flank like his life depended on it. Had a hand in both goals and was the source of Pirates best chances. Pirates got the best of the same world!
I think it’s interesting how Pirates got game changing decisions go against them in successive matches. Soon as they get one questionable decision go their way, everyone from journalists to coaches want to jump in.

My biggest issue with Mbatha is that he caused an unnecessary scrutiny into his early career at Pirates. I’m not a fan of players who speak like they’ve arrived when they haven’t done anything. Keep your head low, put the work in and let the work call people lazy.
Micho and Rhulani had Pirates playing their best football in years, totally exciting stuff and very attacking. But nobody talks about those 2 seasons because they won nothing and couldn’t top Sundowns. That should tell you something…
This is why I suggested everyone logs off. Maela became a horrible player overnight. You need a long look into yourself if you think Maela’s a bad player. One of the best LBs in the country!

2 years and Jose has raked in R30 million. They need to back him up properly in the transfer window. The recruitment team needs to cross oceans if need be to find him what he needs. This thing of going to West Africa and coming back with an exotic name needs to end.
@ 19, Rele is already able to square his man up and apply pausa. Buying time on the ball so options can avail themselves. However he’s yet to learn how to beat his man using pausa. I trust Jose is already handling that. Generational!

Cape Town City FC 0-2 Orlando
Pirates cannot enter another season with a crippled build-up. The game is about flow and flow creates moments. This is how Spurs equalised last season, they kept getting transition after transition and eventually got the goal. Mosele needs to recover ASAP.
Also That last ditch tackle by Sesane! I hope he goes home and dream about it, internalise it and make it his source of strength. He’s got a lot to offer.
This is exciting. I don’t think the PSL has been this exciting in a really long time. We are witnessing the needle shift in real time. Performance analysts are gonna be the most sought after commodity in the SA landscape. It will no longer be exclusive to Dstv prem only.

La Pausa!
You can’t have a Spaniard as a coach and not have a player mastering La Pausa in that team. This is the ability to slow down the game and draw out defenders to create. A player with a ‘La Pausa’ always has an extra second on the ball.
@Lorenz_KO
This is what the PSL needs! Be competitive, push the limits! Say you’re the best and prove on the field. Ramovic’s team definitely walks the talk!
Sundowns B team already leading 2-0 against a team that beat Pirates. When I say this team is at least 3 years ahead of any other opponent in the league, it’s not PR.

There’s a reason why after a football match players shake hands. To leave everything that occurred during the match on the pitch. It’s called sportsmanship.
I’m hurt man. A diabolical call by the hierarchy to let go of Africa’s best coach. Whatever issues they had, surely there was a better solution. I feel really sorry for Sundowns fans.
