Yes, ya girl has been PROMOTED!!!*
...*early* ๐๐พโโ๏ธ๐ช๐พ
Celebration thread alert! ๐จ
I have been promoted to FULL PROFESSOR!๐
Less than 3% of all medical school faculty are Black. In 2023, according to the AAMC, there were *35 TOTAL* Black women Full Professors in OBGYN - and much less in my specialty of Gynecologic Oncology. 1/
Let's start a thread on Black investigators funded by the NIH to do *health equity* work in Black communities.
They may not have 4 R01s, but I'd love to uplift advice for jr faculty that is not drenched in White privilege.
I'll start:
@Eugenia_South
@IssakaMD
@DrLaPrincess
We almost lost a subspecialty trained, NIH funded, brilliant Black doctor because we reproduce racist mediocrity in medical schools every day and reinforce racist incompetence in our profit driven healthcare systems.
2/
Black women in academic medicine, we get to have tired, burn-it-all-down days. I'm grateful to all of you who normalize this regularly
#onhere
.
I shall continue to bring the ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ.
8/end
To be a Black woman in academic medicine is to be in the system, to fight against the system, to be a shield for others from the harms of the system, while trying desperately to make change and stay whole.
5/
And yes her life is just as valuable without all of those accolades, yet it was her own training that saved her life. She would have been sent home to DIE.
3/
And no, don't DM for details bc y'all don't need them. We've heard enough stories. We already know how this happens, over and over and over. We don't need any more 'disparities porn.'
4/
Ultimately, I'm still here because I know I am damn good at my job. I know myself and my team do vital work to help Black women in our lane and it sustains me.
Because I actually like papers, and grants, and learners, and all that jazz...
But I'm tired. I'm tired too.
7/
The root of overwhelm is scarcity. ๐ฌ
You said โyesโ even though you didnโt have the time or the energy... because you think the opportunity will pass you by.
This is a LIE. ๐๐พโโ๏ธ
There will always be more opportunities.
Always. ๐
On my schedule this morning was to dig in to more (amazing!) scholarship on structural racism and gyn health in prep for my next grant application cycle.
But the subtle disconnection required to consume research that investigates your own oppression is gone today.
6/
There is nothing mild about Omicron. Nothing mild about the total upheaval caused by isolation, losing childcare, being unable to work, etc. Not to mention the fatigue. Ugh.
I excavated a moment of deep vulnerability for this piece with
#CharlesRThomas
.
I hope the medical and surgical subspecialties listen...and take action.

I want you to understand that when you walk into that EDI meeting talking about โimplicit bias,โ this is why we look at you like youโre not fucking serious.

Yes. โDisappointingโ is generous. Publishing this level of ignorance about a topic with decades of research and experts who abound is willful harm. Itโs asserting the comfort of these men over actual facts. By a scientific journal. Unbelievable.
I'm grateful today for an amazing feature in the
@SeattleMet
. I truly love what I do, and as a faithful follower of systems and structure - sometimes I forget how much I am actually doing.
Thank you ๐๐พ
My dream one day is that anyone who seeks to do race-based research in health must be educated in the social and historical construction of race. That is all.
I have a friend who is trying to support her trainee who, in turn, is currently in an EPIC battle with another mentor to retain 1st author position on her work. Iโm wonderingโฆif you care so much about being 1st author, WHY ARE YOU MENTORING PEOPLE? Get out of that game, chief.
The Black faculty, trainees, and staff of my department had our own meeting today. Wasn't sure how it would go.
2 hrs later: tears, laughter, and many shared stories of hurt. Realizing our commonalities, fortifying ourselves for the weeks ahead.
So needed. ๐โ๐พ
Congratulations to Dr. Kemi Doll, Associate Professor of OBGYN in our Gynecologic Oncology division, for being awarded the Victoriaโs Secret Global Fund for Womenโs Cancers Rising Innovator Research Grant! Learn more about the award at

Black women in medicine:
Every time you feel like crying, do it. Holding in the grief, the rage, the torment will not serve - itโs corrosive.
Your rest has been bought and paid for over generations.
You donโt owe anyone anything.
.
A town hall meeting where you watch Black people cry and be anguished for a forum of White faces while making NO concrete comments about the blatant racism in your own institution...is the epitome of liberal racism.
Black women, you don't have to participate. โ๏ธ๐พ๐
To all of my Black girls in medicine out there - in school, in training, on the grind - just trying to be stellar amidst suffocating institutional racism and the abject ignorance of many of your 'teachers':
I see you.
I love you.
You are not alone.
Keep going. ๐๐พ๐
A thread on imposter syndrome and departmental exploitation...
So, Iโm 100% on board with knowing our self-worth and kicking imposter syndrome to the curb. But I donโt think we talk enough about the structures that perpetuate these insidious beliefs that we are not enough. 1/5

This cannot be your headline.
This has to be a joke.
All that โlistening and learningโ yโall were doing last summer....
Right. ๐
If more people spent time in the inboxes of any of us who do equity work as our primary focus, y'all may understand better why our boundaries are so high.
The consistent nature of requests for the LOOK of equity over the SUBSTANCE of equity never ceases to amaze me.
Incredibly proud of Dr. Kemi Doll on her appointment as
@UWMedicine
Director of URM Faculty Development! Thank you Dr.
@KemiDoll
, for your unrelenting pursuit of excellence and support of URM individuals within academic medicine.
To Leaders in Academic Medicine,
After you champion diversity and equity, be ready for the tough work of inclusion. That means when your only, near-only, F.O.D. hire starts pointing out problems with your dear faculty or staff - LISTEN. 1/

Also I am entering Day 3 of supporting my son through virtual Kindergarten. ๐
It is impossible to overstate how significant the challenge is for faculty who are working parents of littles.
Leaders - take all of your leeway and understanding, and triple it.

A thread from a Black woman who is staying in academic medicineโฆ1/
The whole thing is poetry.
A *thorough* professional dragging AND a gratitude letter, a message of solidarity AND a reclamation of personal peace.
A full dose of โlet me remind you who I am.โ
Perfection. ๐๐พ๐๐๐พ
I have stopped trying to squeeze *anything* into those 4-8 minutes before the next meeting or phone call or work session starts.
Now I just breathe. Drink more water. Let thoughts settle.
And trust that my schedule works the way I created it to work.
Happy Tuesday!
THRILLED to announce that the Doll Lab Group is now:

If you have a URM Woman faculty at your institution...
With the audacity to want to be an R01 independently funded investigator...
Against ๐๐พthese๐๐พ odds...
What *actions* are you taking to support them?
If you are oscillating between rage-writing and being generally useless you are not alone. (This commentary I'm working on is going to be ๐ฅ though...)
The harder it is to say, the more clearly we must express it.
1. Be honest with yourself first.
2. Be clear, instead of "nice."
3. Learn from the response.
4. It's ok to disappoint people.

Launching 2023 with 2 grant funding notices is a great way to start the year!
Celebrating and planning over at the Doll Lab...
Let's Go!
๐๐พ๐๐พ๐๐พ
You cannot always โniceโ your way into receiving what you deserve. You cannot always โteam playerโ yourself into getting what you need.
Sometimes you have to demand.
Strategically.
#MondayMotivation
Your institution does not determine your worth.
You are worthy, period.
And you alone define your *value.*
You own it.
You protect it.
You execute on it.
That is why you are here.
#MondayMotivation
The amount of self-reflection & self-management required to move successfully as a Black woman in academia often means we are conversing with people who, in comparison, have barely scratched the surface of any level of self-awareness.
It's the mismatch that is so exhausting.
Reading ObGyn residency applications....
We must be doing something right because these students are serving straight FIRE๐ฅ๐ฅ๐ฅ in these personal statements.
Iโm here for it. โ๐พ๐๐พ
In case no one else tells you this week,
You are enough.
You belong here.
You have nothing to prove.
Now - carry on doing exactly what you came here to do. ๐๐พ
#MondayMotivation
Remember that you have a choice.
You have a choice to keep ๐๐พโโ๏ธoverworking๐๐พโโ๏ธ in order to perform 'enough' to feel secure
- ย or - ย
to *choose the challenge* of optimizing your career so you work ๐ฉ๐พโ๐ปmeaningfully๐ฉ๐พโ๐ป and enjoy your success.
Choose wisely.
#MondayMotivation
If you are a health equity researcher, don't ever ever EVER apologize for your boundaries. EVER.
Ask pointed questions about what they want from you.
Ask pointed questions about who is included.
Ask "who all gon' be there" in so many words.
1/
You donโt have to achieve โwork/life balanceโ by settling for an average career.
Settling is burnout in slow motion.
You get to be STELLAR.
You get to have a career of IMPACT.
Thatโs exactly what we came here to do. ๐โ๐พ

Sometimes โdifficultโ means you require respect, clarity, and actions that align with intentions.
Be difficult.

I want every Black woman in academic medicine to take a full day to reflect on what you *really* want for *your* career. How would your work environment change to support that?
I want you to dream up what youโve always deserved.
Now is the time.
We need your dreams. ๐โ๐พ
One thing you have to be ready for as an investigator in racial equity is that you will see the same data presented over and over and over as โnew.โ
The problem is that this reinforces the idea that the description of collinear characteristics is novel. Itโs not.

Trust yourself.

We are enough, we earned our positions, and our contributions are valuable. โ๐พ๐ 5/end
Anyone else been duped into peer reviewing a trash essay on race bc they used the right words in the title?
I just wasted my time on a "Be nicer when we talk about racism, because we are scaring our allies away" piece.
People are dying, but you, know be 'nicer.' ๐

If you have emailed a Black faculty member to give a talk sometime in the last month, please be patient. Our inboxes are insane right now....
Also note that some of us were booking 9-12 mo in advance before all of this started. ๐
Gotta pace ourselves. ๐๐พ
Black women in academic medicine.

I just wrote and deleted 3 tweets.
I need to stay censored today.
I'll just say that it is incredible the extent to which academic medicine will re-invest, over and over and over, in the look of a thing over the substance of a thing.
