It’s sad, but not surprised. The 5 stellar Pacific Islander med students I knew recently
1 didn’t match
1 dropped out MS1, applied 2x
1 matched last rank
1 failed step
1 SOAPed out of dream specialty
I barely graduated. I don’t have imposter syndrome. I KNOW I don’t belong here
1/ Let's look at racial and ethnic identity:
1 in 20 of Black and Hispanic students leave medical school
1 in 10 (‼️) of American Indian/Alaska Native, Hawaiian Native/other Pacific Islander leave medical school

My Native Hawaiian parents taught me to cherish our natural resources & respect our birthplace. Especially our oceans. As a fisherman, my dad tried to teach me his fishing practices. I can only hope I may pass down some of his knowledge one day.
