Right now, children whose families rely on assistance can only attend child care during the exact hours their parents are working. It's disruptive to learning and harmful to families. Over 100 orgs and unions support the bill that would end this rule. Gov Hochul hasn't signed it.

Six months ago I could not have imagined the Governor of New York declaring that we must be on a path to universal child care. Very hopeful as we look to 2022.

Universal child care is on the mind of Gov. Kathy Hochul, based on her approval memo for legislation from @JabariBrisport and @sarahhartclark extending the #childcare availability task force. Could we learn more in state of the state or budget address in January?

🧵Last year, before chronic illness derailed things, several of us talked about a book club for a book I'd picked up, Neoliberalism and Early Childhood Education: Markets, Imaginaries and Governance. I've started a community to pick up where that left off!

It's been 10 years since I saw the harmful impacts of this policy for the first time in the classroom. I felt powerless then and never imagined that I'd be a part of the work to bring it to an end. I'm so proud of our campaign. We've accomplished so much together this year.

This weekend, @GovKathyHochul signed a bill to decouple child care subsidy payments from parents’ work hours, ending the outdated rule limiting families’ access to child care assistance to the exact hours when parents are working or in training. Our statement:

I'm so tired of tech and venture capital thinking that the problem is literally anything other than child care paying worse than 98% of jobs in the country.

Universal preschool for 3 and 4 year olds that occurs during school hours on school days is not universal child care. It is harmful to the cause of universal child care to equate the two.

Framing absence from work because of illness as a child care problem rather than a paid sick leave problem sure is a choice.

having a scope and colonoscopy at 31 wasn't cute but it was a huge relief when I was having really serious stomach pain for months to know that it was nothing life-threatening. Being less anxious about that made it easier to try to address the problem.

If you think child care is bad now, sit around and let private equity eat up all the struggling small child care programs and wait for the headlines like this in 5-10 years.

Patients receiving care at hospitals owned by private-equity firms experience more bloodstream and surgical site infections and fall more often, says a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

If this resonates with you, tell your member of Congress to make sure that child care is a priority in the next stimulus package:

I’ve been keeping an exciting secret that I’m finally ready to share: My first book, The Daycare Myth: What We Get Wrong About Early Care and Education (and What We Should Do About It), will be published this fall by @TCPress at @Columbia University. Focused on the disconnect
