Years ago I did try to include a disabled character in a book but was advised that it was "a bit contrived". There was "no reason for the character to be disabled"; it wasn't "relevant" to the plot. I was pretty perplexed... why couldn't a disabled character just "be"?

How was 2019 for me? On a personal/family level, a GIF showing us tied to a runaway rollercoaster, in the dark, juggling piranhas would pretty much sum it up. But there HAVE been sweet spots; like my book launch for #LittleBirdFlies back in January, complete with BAGPIPER. #YESSS

@LindsayGalvin Reading this thread and nodding madly. Our household = two writers, so there are often months-long periods of 'living on vapours' as Miranda @wurdsmyth so perfectly puts it. In one of those now. *grips seat, white knuckles*

@WardrobeBooks So many well-known authors feel privileged to write for dyslexia-friendly @BarringtonStoke ... they do language edits on all their texts & choose easy read fonts & even use tinted paper. They are passionate about what they do & their books work equally well for struggling readers.

@lizduckchong One spring, age 14, I went to school every day carrying a single daffodil. Must have looked SO pretentious, but my hopeful teen head was full of art, music and fluff. I think I still carry an invisible daffodil with me every single day. Long live hopeful fluff & stuff.

At yesterday's school writing workshop - based around my evacuee novel 'Catching Falling Stars' - a boy looked up at me in awe as I helped him with his writing and said, "Were YOU evacuated, miss?" Yes, sonny, I AM 87... #er

A thought on #virtualauthorvisits ... I reckoned they wouldn't be as much fun as in-person #schoolvisits . But after doing a few, I realise they ARE different, but actually feel more intimate in a way. And I really enjoyed them for that reason! Who knew? @AuthorsAloudUK

@Alexrjpaterson @philipreeve1 I’ve been obsessed with this series since I was a kid! Have you got to the bit when Ma (I think?) goes out to the barn to feed the livestock in a blizzard, and can’t find her way back to the house? A few missteps & it would be open prairie & hypothermia…😬🥶

Any #londonschools fancy a half-day AUTHOR VISIT from me in NOVEMBER/DECEMBER? I've had to postpone a few (paid) invitations from further afield this term; family illness=sticking close to home for now. But I'm missing working with students & 'local' half-days are def. doable!
