Lecturer in Educational Leadership. Programme Director for the Masters in Educational Leadership and Learning at University of Edinburgh. Views my own.
Someone told me the other day that teachers/schools who serve communities w/high levels of trauma and poverty are the educational equivalent of doctors who work in intensive care. The sense of mission and urgency is the same. As is the importance of the term โcareโ.
I like that.
Some of our P7s complained to me in the corridor last week about special jobs in school.
I told them if they wanted to make change they had to ask for what they wanted...in writing.
They did.

Delighted to have been appointed Head Teacher of
@CraigourPark
So excited to meet the children, families and staff then starting an exciting new chapter for the school!
๐๐๐
Child: Mr Brack, that was a really good assembly today.
Me: Thanks! Thatโs kind of you.
Child: You should really do good ones more often!
๐๐๐
I love that in the end, the hero of
#TheNest
was the social worker who at first looked trampled down by the system but in the end achieved the best outcome through relentless, thankless hard work, relationship building and empathy for people in the most complex of circumstances.
A week ago I had never used Teams.
Four days ago my staff had never heard of Teams.
Today all of our classes, specialists and SFL staff have Teams ready to roll out online learning next week.
Amazing what we can achieve together. ๐๐๐
Big shout out to my fellow Hub Leaders and incredible staff teams who are providing vital care and learning for our NHS and emergency services in Edinburgh!
What a service to our city and nation.
#MadeforTheseTimes
Iโve created this tool to support our staff teamโs wellbeing at this time of crisis.
Happy to share. DM if you want the template emailed. ๐๐๐
While you are potentially home-schooling your children, if you need assistance with understanding something that has been assigned for your child, or some ideas to help them learn, just give me a shout.
Message me anything you may need, however small it may be.
Great to have our kids back today, mainly for their chat.
My favourite moment of the day was one of the P2s who came up to me and said โhello, you look familiar, whatโs your name again?โ

Itโs the weirdest
#SundayFeeling
ever? Who knows what this week holds but comforted by knowing I work with a strong team of committed people who will do their very best in challenging circumstances.
Pleased to share that I will be taking up a new challenge in 2018 as an Attainment Advisor for Education Scotland contributing to the national mission to close the poverty related attainment gap.
Been trying for days to think of a simple way to express how it feels to return to school.
This sums it up pretty well.
We have the opportunity to do better and reinvent what we do. Letโs not waste it.
#BackToSchool
In the second last week of a very complex and tough year for children and staff it was so brilliant to celebrate as a school family and feel such a strong sense of community, joy and togetherness.
Hope the rest of Scotland enjoyed seeing it on the news tonight!
Off on my first ever holiday in โschool timeโ since I started my secondment. Walk into Starbucks and the person serving is a former pupil who says โMr Brack, why are you not at work?โ

So good to be back with our kids today!
Highlight was a wee boy in P4 calling me over to say โMr Brack I knew youโd be back, I just felt it in my heartโ
๐๐
What a fantastic first day back at Brunstane for our children and families. So good to see our new P1 children so settled in their new class.
Thank you to all the parents/carers for making our children look so smart and be so ready to learn!
A great start to 2018/19! ๐๐
What a week!
Couldnโt be prouder of our team who in 5 days created an online school for 423 children, opened and staffed a hub for our NHS/emergency staff, called 20 kids and provided 22 food parcels for families!
One very proud, grateful & slightly tired Head Teacher tonight!
Delighted to have completed my first marathon today in my hometown.
Thank you so much to all those who donated to my chosen charity of The Scottish Huntingtonโs Association. Fantastic amount raised. ๐โโ๏ธ๐
Any final donations very welcome.
Walking through the playground today and I spot a child I hadnโt seen since returning.
Me: Hello! Itโs so good to see you. Havenโt seen you for ages.
Child: (Looks at me like Iโm crazy)
โMr Brack do you not know thereโs been a lockdown on...cause of coronaโ
Is there any better feeling after a busy week at work and only being one week post-inspection than being IDd for a bottle of wine in your weekly shop and seeing the look of surprise when the checkout person sees your real age!
Signing off after 3 amazing years as Head Teacher at Brunstane. So proud to have led such an amazing school community and to have achieved so much together.
Looking forward to my new role as an Attainment Advisor at Education Scotland in 2018.
I remember so clearly being in Primary 6 when
#Dunblane
happened.
I remember looking at the external doors of our gym hall at every assembly and PE lesson for months after
It changed school safety forever. That safety is the legacy of those irreplaceable children and Mrs Mayor
I love people and humanity in general.
BUT the fact that the only beer in the massive aisle in Tesco tonight is Corona makes me worry for us as a species.
Chuffed to bits to complete the 10K around Arthurโs Seat this morning in 52 mins- even more chuffed to raise ยฃ550 (so far) for the wonderful work of

Thanks to everyone for their support and kind donations. It is so appreciated.

Happy writing and have an amazing summer! โ๏ธโ๏ธโ๏ธ
Massive congratulations to the wonderful
@hive_ow
on being recognised in the
#PlatinumJubilee
honours with an MBE.
I canโt think of anyone more deserving of recognition for her tireless advocacy for and action to address the issue of wellbeing in education. ๐๐๐
Closing the door on the strangest day of my career by far.
Massive mix of sadness, apprehension and confusion tinged with the joy of how well our community has rallied around each other.
So letโs be hopeful and persevere!
Me last week: Once I go on holiday Iโm really good at relaxing.
Two days in: up at 6, ran 8 miles, three loads of washing, gutted the garden, cleared out two cupboards, cooked enough food to last the whole summer and itโs not even 3 oโclock.
First heard Pak Tee Ng say these words years ago but this quote has continuing relevance, particularly in a time of such significant educational flux

First half marathon since the โbefore timesโ! ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ๐โโ๏ธ
So good and there was such an uplifting atmosphere. Felt very covid-safe too. Thanks
@ScottishHalfMar
Will miss this view every Wednesday- last shift in the key worker hub. Thanks to all the fantastic colleagues Iโve met from 10 schools across the city and all the very resilient key worker children and families.
Fantastic to launch our first session on Anti-Racism and Diversity in the Profession for colleagues in Initial Teacher Education
@MorayHouse
today.
Looking forward to learning together over the course of the next year!
What strikes me most is the incredible support we received during the week. From parents handing in sweets to keep the staff going to other Edinburgh HTs arriving w/60 Krispy Kreme donuts or hand knitting us a lucky mascot to partners offering their services for free.

Thank you to the team of HMI from
@EducationScot
who have provided us with a very positive week of engagement. Thank you to all the learners, staff, parents and partners who contributed. Very proud of our school community this week. ๐๐๐
New research promoting the benefits of actively looking for new and interesting sights when walking reducing the impact of โpandemic malaiseโ on our health.

Massive thank you to
@GayleGgorman
@Columba1400
for a genuinely uplifting session this morning.
My takeaway was Gayleโs message of โletโs celebrate how a system flipped in a matter of days and use this as a catalyst for changeโ
I am running the Edinburgh Marathon this May for

You know youโre deep into the Christmas Crazy season in school when itโs 8pm and youโre standing in the biscuit aisle in Tesco mumbling aloud the names of your PSAs and counting on your fingers. ๐ฒ๐ ๐ปโ๏ธ
A bumper Harvest at Brunstane! Thank you SO MUCH to everyone who donated! Mr Brack and some P7s will be taking it down to Edinburgh North East foodbank tomorrow morning. ๐ฝ๐ฅ๐ ๐

Managed to go seventeen months through covid in schools and hubs with hundreds of kids and staff and then get contact traced one week short of being two weeks post double vaccination! ๐๐
Thanks to the mystery angel who dropped this off today to ease the isolation! ๐ค๐ค

When the network goes down all day so you have to hand write your feedback sheets for parent consultations and photocopy like itโs parents night in 1987.

So here it is... all 535 of our children received a Christmas Bag to take home today with food and Christmas treats for them and their family.
Massive thank you to Mrs Swan and Mrs Hay for pulling together the work of so many staff, parents and partners to make this happen! ๐
Now THIS is how to celebrate
#worldbookday19
No meaningless costumes that put unnecessary pressure on families and stigmatise kids but a real focus on developing a love of reading.
Really liked this idea from
@BoroughmuirHS
A whole day of parents coming together as a โclass for the dayโ and receiving first hand the learning and teaching their children receive.
Real, engaging, useful family learning. ๐๐๐
P3: Mr Brack can I ask you something?
Me: Of course
P3: Do you know God?
Me: I know about God
P3: Ah (looks disappointed for me) I do, and I know his name. (Walks away looking smug)
