This event isn’t getting enough attention. Estimated 3.4 BILLION 💴 JUST IN CORN losses. That doesn’t even include all the other structural damage and power outages. Such a sad event and one that will show up on grocery stores soon.

In just minutes, Monday's derecho caused damage to 10 million acres of Iowa farms. Billions of dollars is estimated to have been lost from the destruction of the state's corn crop.
This has been the busiest 48 hours of my career. Surveyed the most intense tornado damage I’ve ever seen today in

What happened to the 8, 12, 20+ inch snow forecast you ask? We never were forecasting anywhere near those amounts. That’s why you stick the experts, not the people playing them on social media.
#stlwx
Accumulating snow will move into Nrn portions of the area THU AM & spread SE across the region. 2-6" of snow is expected, with most of that snow falling in few hour period at any given location. Strong gusty winds will produce blowing/drifting snow conditions.

I got an early birthday gift this year! Gabby and I are over-the-moon with our new daughter, Oakley Lynn Deitsch (6 pounds and 10 ounces). She was even welcomed by an incredible sunset on her first day here with us (after I showed her the clouds first, obviously). ❤️
I am very excited and incredibly humbled to announce that I have accepted a job as the Warning Coordination Meteorologist (WCM) in St. Louis. A huge shoutout to all my coworkers and mentors I’ve met along the way, as this was only possible because of you!
Time to rant - One of my biggest NWS pet peeves is CWA-centric graphics. Why do we as an agency use them!? CWA boundaries mean NOTHING to anyone but us. Coordinate with your neighbors and make a nice, consistent forecast! Weather doesn’t stop at county borders.
In discussions with residents, it sounded like many took shelter, especially when a Tornado Emergency was issued. This was very good to hear as an NWS employee! 🙌

I am just so proud of our office
@NWSStLouis
for their work on the tornado outbreak last night. Timely warnings and effective communication undoubtedly saved lives. We have such an incredible, dedicated staff and it really showed through last night!
Growing increasingly concerned we are going to jump quickly into severe weather season in the next 7-14 days. Good thing next week is severe weather preparedness week in MO and IL!
#PrepareNow
It is time to stop issuing Special Weather Statements for thunderstorms. Cannot believe a product we started that was supposed to last one year when we went from 3/4” hail to 1” hail is still being issued. Can’t update them. Can’t keep them consistent. Time to end!
I want to extend my sincere gratitude to the meteorologists, broadcasters, and the National Weather Service for their service during Friday’s tornadoes. Their outstanding work helped save lives and keep our communities safe.
I’m sick of hearing about the “GFS” and the “Euro” and we are still a week away from this storm. Reason

the winter sucks. In today’s world of ensemble forecasting, there is zero reason a deterministic model should ever be shown this far out. Well other than getting clicks..
Another significant day, another NWSChat failure. This continues to be embarrassing for all of us
@NWS
and our partners are just as frustrated as we all are. This needs to be fixed!!
I am BEGGING. Please get NWS chat the funding it needs to fix the stability issues. It is failing right now with multiple Tornado warnings across the country. This is how emergency managers, broadcast meteorologists, & NWS meteorologists communicate life saving critical info.
This guy absolutely rocked it on radar last night. Multiple, potentially strong tornadoes on the ground at once and he handled it flawlessly. Everyone
@NWSStLouis
put in such great work last night and no doubt saved countless lives. Well done team!
I've worked many severe & tornado events in my career. Last night is a memorable one. Super proud of the entire team
@NWSStLouis
!!!
@KDeitsch_wx
rocked as my asst. The power of the LLJ blowing out the hodo. Dual pol is amazing. Now getting ready for a long day of surveying.
I cannot believe a major local news outlet would put something like this out 5 days in advance of a storm. This is reckless. Very happy our media in
#stlwx
isn’t like this! We have the best broadcast mets in the country!
❄️PLEASE NO!!!❄️ Sunday night has the likelihood of being huge in Oklahoma, with many people receiving near or over A FOOT OF SNOW at the end of the week and into Monday.
We at the NWS announced today the term “Advisory” will be going away but that type of information will still be conveyed in plain language statements. So instead of “Winter Wx Advy” it may read “two inches of snow to affect morning commute.” Thoughts on this change?
4th and 12 for Minnesota led to some wild adventures with the officiating
One that seemed to go entirely overlooked (among many) is the facemask happening right here, which the broadcast didn’t even acknowledge
So proud of
@NWSStLouis
for this incredible forecast. The yellow represents observed amounts and the underlying image is our forecast before the first flakes started flying. With mixed precip making it even more challenging, this forecast was seriously impressive!
#NailedIt
All right St. Louis mets - what did we do wrong? Why are so many people still on the roads when we said fairly accurately when this would start and how bad it would be? Did they not believe us? Schools listened. Some businesses did. But amazed how many didn’t listen...

Want to give a huge shoutout to all our first responders for their flood response today. I dont think we will ever know how many lives you saved with all the water rescues. Your work is sincerely appreciated and the community thanks you!

This is how you social distance AND accomplish the NWS mission. Getting a briefing on the severe threat from folks in the office. Love my team of coworkers!
Not quite sure I ever recall a watches/warnings map like this. Winter from coast to coast, border to border. Truly an impressive shot of cold air into the heart of the country. 🥶
Very proud of the
@NWSStLouis
today. A very difficult forecast with how today would evolve, yet this graphic was put out hours before storms developed. The location and threats were SPOT ON! Yay team!
Not letting adversity define me. I lost my father a week before my 15th birthday. Was I going to sulk and throw my life away? Or was I going to quickly mature and be the rock for my mom and sister? I chose the latter - a tougher choice but one that’s got me where I am today!
Happy Wednesday! Let's kick of December with a little positivity!
What's the best decision you've made in your career so far (school included)?

killing less people than originally expected is like an ice storm. When people respond and take action based on the threat (social distancing or staying off the roads) the impacts are far less. That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t have been a catastrophe without the action!
Growing increasingly concerned for Sunday. Impressive low-level shear profiles and deep layer shear vectors orthogonal to the initiating boundary suggests the potential for supercellular tornadoes. Plenty of time for this to change, but this could be a high-impact event for us.
There is a good chance that we'll see at least a few severe storms on Sunday afternoon or evening, and concern is increasing that severe storms may be more numerous. Now is the time to make sure you're severe weather plans are in place!

My evening PSA to mets:
1. Avoid showing only deterministic models. You’re only showing 1 or 2 solutions out of 100+! Leverage probabilistic information!
2. Don’t cut off forecast information at your CWA/DMA! Our arbitrary borders mean nothing to the public we are serving!
While it can be annoying, I think we all should learn something here. People ask about TorCon because they understand it! If we are honest with ourselves, the SPC outlook percentages and names (Enhanced, Moderate) are very confusing to the public. TorCon works.
PSA: For the love of meteorology, please don’t ask any meteorologist about “TorCon”. That’s a made up term by TWC. Ask them. If you want to ask about EHI or STP, that’s cool, but please, not TorCon. On behalf of every meteorologist that doesn’t work for TWC - thanks!
It pains me to see local media stations nowhere near the coast (not St. Louis thankfully) sending their meteorologists into hurricanes simply for ratings. It’s a dangerous game they’re playing and completely sends the wrong message to the public.
#StayHome
I hate how they call this a “government shutdown.” In a true shutdown no planes would be flying, there’d be no border patrol, no military, no mail, no welfare, and no weather info. Wonder how long the “shutdown” would last then 🤔
I sincerely hope I’m wrong, but I’m scared that more chasers are going to get injured this week. The amount of hype and excitement already going on doesn’t bode well for people following traffic laws. Please be careful folks. 🙏
Today is a shining example of how important partnerships are. When things go awry (WEA going off for a drill when it’s not supposed to), our media partners and EMDs came to our defense to help clear the confusion. We couldn’t do it without you all!
#HappyWCM
Seeing the storms persisting in southwest MO could be good for the STL metro. Those may get into the area before the atmosphere can truly destabilize. A trend we will be watching this morning.
#stlwx
It’s times like these where I cannot stand winter. 5-6 days out and raw model snow output is being carelessly shared and people are panicking for no reason at all. Deep breaths folks, we have had storms like this in the past and we will get through it like we always do.
#mowx
Thanks to the hard work of
@FEMA
, we’ve pre-positioned resources, equipment, and response teams to respond to Hurricane Ida. That includes more than 2,400 FEMA employees, millions of meals and liters of water, generators, search and rescue teams, and over 100 ambulances.
Not going to lie, was pretty proud of how this presentation turned out! Love being able to tell the story of all the folks who saved lives that night. Thanks to those who dropped by!

What. A. Day. Met the Missouri Governor. Gave weather support that ultimately closed the MO State Fair. Was transported with sirens and flashing lights through the state fair like a VIP. Oh and now my govt vehicle has a low tire and I have zero cash...

For those complaining it hasn’t snowed yet in St. Louis, this was expected if you read into the details we have been saying for several days now. The worst of this storm will be overnight into Thursday and all of the metro will see a significant accumulation.
Let's try that again with the correct date:
Wed 4pm Update: But wait, there's more!
Additional wintry precipitation is expected this evening through tomorrow. Road conditions will remain hazardous. Please avoid travel if possible!

Special Weather Statements/Significant Weather Advisories for thunderstorms should be discontinued. You can’t change/update them once they’re out, they’re extremely inconsistent in their use, and their dissemination footprint is limited.
Change my mind!
It was one of the most rewarding days of my career. It was great briefing

’s finest today - it’s called a horseshoe. Texas toast, French fries, buffalo chicken, and cheese sauce. Basically a heart attack on a plate 🤷♂️
Granted we are getting into severe weather season, but these CFS chiclets are lit up like a Christmas tree especially after April 7th. General pattern favors severe weather in the mid-Mississippi Valley periodically as well. Buckle up!
Well, that day escalated quickly. Will have to look back at why winds in the St Louis metro and areas east stayed backed and thus enhanced our low-level shear parameters. But that is absolutely why storms started spinning when they got into the metro.

for traveling out to Columbia and talking to us about your experiences in the NWS at St. Louis! It was a fun break from studying for finals.
The NWS in St Louis has a new Meteorologist-in-Charge, but it's a very familiar face! Jim Sieveking has been at NWS St Louis since 2003 and has been our Science and Operations Officer since 2015. Read more about Jim's career in our press release:

At what point will police get involved in this ridiculousness? Dangerously flying past cars while crossing double yellow lines, all while bragging about his grainy footage. It makes me sick and this type of chaser behavior needs to STOP before more people get killed.

outside of Crockett Texas. Deployed graviton sensors and took a direct hit. We could hear the tornado several minutes before impact
The only positive things I can think of with this event that may temper *some* of the impact:
There are no crops to destroy (can you imagine this was in the growing season?) and there are no leaves on the trees which may be keeping at least some trees standing. Otherwise? Wow.
