🎊 🍾I am delighted to announce that I have been promoted to Associate Professor
@DMF_UNIL
@FBM_UNIL
🥂🎉. It would never have been possible without the fabulous contribution of my many present and former lab members or without the support of my dear colleagues: thanks to all! 🥰
Delighted to share our latest preprint! 🎉 We discovered a critical connection between DNA methylation and chromosome replication in the Agrobacterium tumefaciens plant pathogen. Fantastic work from
@Mart1_100dra
and
@FlorianFournes
.
Very honored to receive a Teaching Award from my Faculty tonight. Thanks to all PhD students and post-docs contributing to my teaching
@DMF_UNIL
and to all students for their enthusiasm following courses.
Very proud to announce that
@Sandra_Martin
defended her public PhD last Friday. 🎉🎉🎉She has been my very first lab member working on Agrobacterium tumefaciens and she made fantastic new discoveries on the impact of DNA methylation in this plant pathogen.🧬🪴👩🔬
18 Bachelor students screening 5000 Pseudomonas mutants during their Molecular Biology course
@ecolebiolunil
... can't wait to see what they will find!
Our latest preprint is online! We identified a novel and conserved DnaA-related protein that promotes replication initiation during exit from stationary phase. Congrats to
@AntonioFrandi
from
@DMF_UNIL
who did most of the job.
Voice-less while closing down my lab for minimum 7 weeks. I will miss my team and colleagues
@DMF_UNIL
enormously but I am convinced that it is the best decision to slow down the epidemics.
Very proud of my team
@DMF_UNIL
: Sandra MARTIN just obtained the BEST TALK AWARD at
@Agromeeting
for her very first talk at a conference! Congratulations to her and a huge thank you to
@snsf_ch
for funding this project throughout.
Excited to share our latest manuscript on DNA mismatch repair (MMR) in Caulobacter: we show that MMR proteins are integral components of the replisome!
Exceptional new opportunity to join our lab as a PhD student
@DMF_UNIL
to study Epigenetics in Alphaproteobacteria. If interested, apply on the following website before March 15th:
Proud of my
@ecolebiolunil
@unil
Bachelor students performing very well during their practical Molecular Biology course, despite very strict conditions to keep everyone as safe as possible. This week, they learned how to make PCRs, clone and transform bacteria!
While I spent my day reading a PhD thesis on DNA replication control in E. coli today, I realized that I defended my own PhD precisely 20 years ago (19th March 2004)! 🎂🎉 I am very grateful to
@PhBouloc
who has been a great mentor!
Is anyone (Student/Tech/Post-doc) interested to join my lab in for a short but funded 3 month-period (Sept.1st-Nov.30th) to work on bacterial toxins? Candidates MUST already be in Switzerland and should get in touch with me directly by email.
Here we are again, finding exciting connections between cell cycle progression and the metabolic status of the bacterial cell. Great work from the
@ViollierPat
team.
On strike to fight against these numbers: while 56% of our PhD students are women, 81% of our Professors are men in my Faculty! Where do women disappear?

My Department will host Didier Mazel this up-coming Friday. He will give a seminar on the Architecture and the Replication of the two Vibrio chromosomes. Everyone can join (12pm at the Biophore) and I am looking forward to it!
Please RT: Interested in Epigenetics/Cell cycle control/Alphaproteobacteria? A PhD position is available in my lab. Fantastic Department, right by the Geneva lake!
Feel free to apply:

Si 35% des franciliens ont deja eu la Covid-19, ne serait-il pas judicieux de faire des test serologiques systematiques avant chaque vaccination, pour optimiser l’utilisation des doses de vaccins disponibles?
Un vrai bonheur d'accueillir les nouveaux étudiants et de retrouver les habitués

@unil
cette semaine! Je vous souhaite à tous une joyeuse rentrée et une superbe année académique.
Decades of studies on CtrA, but still so many fascinating things to disciover abiout it!
Bacterial cell cycle and growth phase switch by the essential transcriptional regulator CtrA
Such sad news... We will all miss him enormously. He was a role model for so many as an amazing geneticist with such a lovely personality. We will never forget him.
Our dear friend and colleague Joseph (Pepe) Casadesús passed away earlier today. He was a legend of Spanish microbiology, an amazing mentor of many young researchers and an inspiration for the whole community. He will be sorely missed RIP.
👩🎓👨🎓📚Welcome, new students
@ecolebiolunil
@FBM_UNIL
. May this academic year be filled with unforgettable experiences. Embrace the journey, stay curious and reach for your best! 🎉
What may be the connection between proline levels and the expression of a bacterial toxin? Look for an answer at Poster 57 from Annabelle in my lab!

Frederic Boccard from
@I2BCParisSaclay
will talk about chromosome organization in E. coli and P. aeruginosa. Tuesday March 6, 11h00-12h00, room 2917.2
@DMF_UNIL
@unil
All welcome!
@amazeld
@FlorianFournes
Yes, indeed: Gammaproteobacteria and Alphaproteobacteria both use DNA methylation to control their secondary chromosomal origins of replication, but using totally different proteins/regulatory networks. Fascinating! I should have worked on multipartite genomes earlier...
We show that Caulobacter connects MMR proteins to the replication machinery to repair replication errors as soon as they occur, preventing the emergence of antibiotic resistances.
Still so much more to understand about the biological function of m6A in nucleic acids! One more example: N6-methyladenosine modification of HIV-1 RNA evades RIG-I-mediated sensing to suppresses type-I interferon induction in monocytic cells

Quote from Melanie: "However, my ‘Plan B’ quickly came into effect when a friend informed me about an opening for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position at EPFL in Switzerland." 🥰 The best idea I ever had!!! Now, I have my friend next door in Lausanne.
Finaly out from the PGB foundry: the role of the mysterious RctB domain IV in the 2 chromosomes replication coupling. Bravo
