@EvolvedBiofilm @JPox14 Another important point is that we are measuring net effects, which is probably a combination of positive and negative interactions that are superimposed in complex ways.

@EvolvedBiofilm @JPox14 So we absolutely need what this perspective piece is doing: a meta-analysis to pull out the patterns coming from all the biased experiments :) Curious to hear what people think about these ideas!

The bottom line: beware of fitting a generalized Lotka-Volterra model if you are using batch cultures. This model is more appropriate for chemostat experiments; for batch cultures we recommend fitting a consumer-resource model. To find out why, read the paper :) (2/3)

Super excited to share my first first author pre-print 🤩 We studied how resource partitioning facilitates the coexistence of closely related 🐝 gut bacteria...both in vivo and in vitro😎! Thanks to all the collaborators! 🤝

@biofilmbiol @EvolvedBiofilm @biofilmPapers @VernitaGordon @Cwhitch @KendraRumbaugh @Center4Biofilm @Biofilm_Lab_UCD @DevDusane @KimInSingapore @Chapman_Lab @mattchapman22 @HarcombeLab One important aspect in my opinion is the heterogeneity of the environment. Cells within the same biofilm may be experiencing very different conditions, depending on local nutrient concentrations, the identity of their neighbors, etc.
