We just launched a new free resource on our website that is going to list all the major local algorithm updates, feature changes, and policy changes that we discover in Local SEO. It will be updated weekly and alerts will be sent out via our newsletter.
😱Well the news is out, the new ranking factor we are seeing that has a massive impact on ranking is HOURS. We're seeing that businesses literally vanish in the local pack when they are not open. We started seeing this with the November 2023 core update. This is also making
Instead of boosting a Facebook post, take out a $20, light it on fire and take a video of it - it will probably produce a better ROI 🤣

In case you're wondering, that test that
@randfish
had us do on the webinar with
@iPullRank
where a few hundred people searched "vietnamese restaurant seattle" and clicked on the Google Business profile for a specific business. This is how they rank right now. 🤯
Great to know that Reddit, Quora, and a 3-year-old Avvo thread are "better" results for this legal query than the American Bar Association 🤦♀️
Makes it even better that the top answer on one of the Reddit threads is from someone with an 18+ profile with some answers so gross I
My husband recently got laid off and is looking for new employment. His background is in video editing but he's also open to learning something new. Please let me know if you have any good opportunities for him. Retweets appreciated! 🙂
Google just added this to their guidelines for Google Posts: Google My Business is not meant to be a forum for general political, social commentary, or personal rants. Content that does not meet this standard will be removed.
A brand new GMB listing. The website isn't even a month old, has zero backlinks, the listing has no reviews, and the site is not optimized yet. However, they rank thanks to keywords in the business name. Google needs to fix their algorithm.

Remember when SEOs said that featured snippets were going to kill website traffic? Maybe they did for some very specific queries like "what's the weather", but at my agency we optimize for them like crazy because they result in an insane amount of MORE traffic if you get one.
Google is prompting people to search for women-led businesses on their homepage. If you're a woman running a business, it's a good idea to get this attribute added to your GMB listing!
Just saw ANOTHER business who had someone move their pin 2 hours away from their actual location. And yep, of course, their rankings tanked. This is getting insane.

🎉🎉If you haven't signed up for our free webinar Thursday, you're gonna want to do that. Today, my team discovered a NEW ranking factor that I have not published yet (blog + video coming soon). This is very recent, something that changed in the last few weeks after the last core
Well, the new name is finally showing up in the GMB dashboard this morning. So I guess I have to call it the GBP Manager now instead of GMB dashboard. This is going to take a while to get used to 😒
I am beyond thrilled to announce that
@noahlearner
will be joining the
@SterlingSkyInc
team next month. Sometimes I feel like I'm living in a dream world when I think about how many talented people I get to surround myself with every day. 🎉
Google just added a new feature to the dashboard that allows businesses to easily make embeddable maps for their website and supports multi-location businesses. via

It's been 9 months since we've taken over the Local Search Forum and I'm really excited to say that our traffic has officially doubled!
@LocalSearchLink
If you haven't joined already, you really should 😉
Want a great example of how broken Google's local algorithm is? This is why fake lead generation listings will never die. It's just too easy to get them to rank. Google needs to stop weighting keywords in the business name so heavily. cc:
@dannysullivan
"We found a strong correlation between higher spending and higher client satisfaction. In fact, clients that spent over $500/month [on SEO] were 53.3% more likely to be “extremely satisfied” compared to those that spent less than $500/month."
SEOs everywhere: OMG your page speed. Get your page speed higher or you won't rank.
Meanwhile, the page that continues to rise and rise for one of the most competitive keywords I've touched in my career:
Wondering what URL you should link your GMB listing to? The homepage? A location page? Something else? See what we found when we measured how the Google My Business landing page impacted ranking in the local pack (3-pack).
😱This new spamming technique is BONKERS. I just escalated a thread on the forum, so hopefully Google fixes it soon.
Several businesses with completely different addresses are all now showing up pinned at the same location.
I think there is a good chance this is intentional.
There are a LOT of things with Google My Business that are not functioning as normal right now due to COVID-19. Many of these just started on Friday. I have compiled a list of everything I'm seeing thusfar here:
@JoyanneHawkins
The team tells me we've long used "openness" as part of our local ranking systems, and it recently became a stronger signal for non-navigational queries. This might change in various ways, as we continue to evaluate the usefulness of it, however.
Wow, this feature is really cool. Seeing it for tons of local businesses. Definitely gives them a more compelling reason to have a regularly-updated blog.
The guidelines for Google My Business were updated again. I believe this time it does change things. I've never heard GMB say that service area businesses qualify for multiple listings if they have different staff before. I've updated my article:
Despite all the talk of "more interactions happening on Google", I'm still seeing increases in traffic to websites from GMB over the last couple of years. The death of the website is a myth.
Local SEOs if you are using Search Console to track activity from the 3-pack you could be looking at some seriously wrong data. Check out this test I recently did and feel free to chime in -
Google has added a bunch of new business categories! Some notable ones include:
➡️ Gutter service
➡️ Junk removal service
➡️ Home staging service

Well after a year, hundreds of hours, and over a hundred videos, we just hit our first milestone of 1000 subscribers on YouTube. It takes a lot of work to grow an audience there but will be worth it. 🏆🎉
I'm super honored to be promoted along with
@TheSocialDude
to Platinum Product Expert status on the Google My Business forum. Previously, there was only 1 of these on the GMB forum (Helmut, who isn't on Twitter). The
@GooglePEProgram
is an awesome group to be a part of.
I wonder who this web design company pissed off? Someone changed their name to "Closed" and their business category to "garbage dump". 🤷♀️

Here is my write-up on
@sengineland
about what we're seeing with the Bedlam update. Even as of today, we're still seeing drastic shifts in the local results.
Next time someone asks me about the importance of voice search I will remind them of how I just told my Google Home to turn the lights off and instead it started playing Fight Song. We have a long way to go people... 😂
It's now been 1 year since we took over the Local Search Forum. Traffic has grown 168% and continues to rise.
@LocalSearchLink
. We have lots of very exciting plans for next year that we'll be announcing at
@localuniv
in a couple weeks!
Throughout the years, we have learned a lot about Google My Business suspensions so
@ColanNielsen
and I put together this guide to help answer most of the frequently asked questions about them:
Well for those who were wondering - Yes, we (
@SterlingSkyInc
) acquired the Local Search Forum this month. Very excited for what we have in store to continue to make this a huge valuable resource to the Local Search community.
@LocalSearchLink
I constantly remind myself of this.
Next time you feel the need to call out another SEO or Googler for something they said that you don't like, just remember that ruining their day is not the best way to make your day better.
People might seem like they are tough. They aren't.
The next time you feel like outing someone on Twitter, I would encourage you to pause and consider the outcome it might have on that person's well-being. As someone who was bullied growing up, I cannot express how much better life would be if there was less of this on Twitter.
I spoke recently on one of our webinars about how we've been encouraging clients to list prices on their websites and how it's leading to more traffic and conversions. Just posted my second case study about it:
Did you know that if you have the Google My Business messaging feature activated, Google could actually be prompting your prospects to also contact your competitors? 😬h/t

Does building backlinks to your GMB listing help it rank better? I can't tell you how often I hear this question so I'm very happy to publish our findings after testing this:
So incredibly proud of the in-house publicist I hired last year.
@WesThePublicist
just shared these stats with me from the last year:
- 273 articles placed successfully
- 50 losses (pitches that failed to land)
- 27 outstanding, but recent
80%+ closing rate. Amazing work!🥇
This weekend, my sister got to bring home Zeph. He is a 1-year-old baby from Eastern Europe with Down syndrome and is the 2nd special needs adoption they have done. I have a lot to be thankful for. 1/5
We just added a new free resource on our website. You can now see what Google My Business categories were added, removed, or updated recently. I'll be updating this monthly!
Having fun playing with the new Chrome Extension from Pleper. While in Google Maps, you can quickly see a comparison of what categories businesses are using, along with how many reviews they have, on average.
I just published an article that explains how the local filter works and clarifies that it can actually suppress the ranking of a listing, not just remove it completely from ranking in the local results.
