I’m excited (& a bit scared) that my book about how free speech is being sacrificed at the altar of corporate brand management is getting real. Going to work shouldn’t involve trading away our rights to speech & to participate in democracy-even for those working at the ABC.
In the 21st century, major corporations have become the most powerful institution in the world.
WORKING FOR THE BRAND by
@JoshBBornstein
explores the threat corporations pose to free speech and democracy — and what can be done.

It’s a privilege to represent Antoinette Lattouf in her unlawful termination case against the ABC which has now been expanded. We claim that the sacking was based on both political opinion and race.
One of the most disturbing features of the lawyers’ group that targeted
@antoinette_news
was the suggestion of contriving some sort of legal threat to bluff the ABC.
The Fair Work Commission has decided that the ABC sacked
@antoinette_news
. It has comprehensively rejected the ABC’s jurisdictional challenge to her unlawful termination case which can now proceed to the Federal Court.
A deep dive reveals that ABC management now admit that
@antoinette_news
did not breach any policies and didn’t contravene a directive. So why was she sacked ?
I have to disagree. People ‘singled out’ South Africa’ and campaigned against its apartheid, successfully helping to dismantle that system. On this type of logic, the anti-apartheid movement would be considered racist- against white South Africans!
Speaking at the
@PressClubAust
, Australia’s Attorney General
@MarkDreyfusKCMP
on whether criticism of Israel is antisemitic: “when people are singling out Israel and applying a standard to Israel that they do not apply to other countries, then potentially there’s antisemitism
“The work wasn’t intended to bully”, says Michael Miller, executive chairman of News Corp Australasia in response to Kat Wong’s questioning around whether it was okay for News Corp to bully people like Yassmin Abdel-Magied, Antoinette Lattouf, Brittany Higgins & those in the
Folks this is an awful result. That said, winning a referendum is extraordinarily difficult. If it’s not bipartisan, it’s almost fatal. Add to that the fact that this was the first referendum in the post- truth era:, the era of poorly regulated social media.
So it’s very clear . I hate anti semitism and condemn it. I have fought it since I was 5 years old. I also hate false claims based on doctored footage- misinformation- designed to achieve a political outcome.
I hope that the ALP caucus uses the opportunity that now presents itself to consider adopting the ALP National Conference policy on recognition of Palestine and thereby joining the 146 other countries to do so.
The ABC has filed an amended Respone to
@antoinette_news
’ case that now says it did not sack her. This contrasts its original filed Response which confirmed that it terminated her employment.
Dutton has trivialised the deaths of 35 people who died as a result of the Port Arthur massacre. That’s a new low- even for him. I’m not sure that Trump could match it.
NSW police confirm that the reports of revolting anti semitic comments at the protest outside Sydney Opera House were FALSE . What a tragedy that vigilantism took hold with people sacked and black listed including
@antoinette_news
.
Geoffrey Watson argues that the Sofronoff report reads like a hatchet job on Drumgold & is silent on the failures in the criminal justice system in dealing with women alleging rape.
In yesterday’s dramatic hearing in the case of
@antoinette_news
v ABC, ABC management admitted that there was no direction given to Antoinette about social media posts. Evidence was also given that David Anderson agreed with taking her off air.
The Liberal Party react to the judicial finding that one of its staffers raped Brittany Higgins by questioning her compensation settlement. The compensation payment was for the harm caused by rape.
Powerful interview of
@louiseadler
by
@latingle
on 7.30 report about the censorship of criticism of Israel’s treatment of the Palestinians . At a time when there’s a lot of that censorship going on, kudos to the ABC.
If you read the Fair Work Commission decision that confirmed that the ABC sacked
@antoinette_news
, you will see that the ABC argued that it merely “varied” Antoinette’s “duties to nil”. Unsurprisingly the argument was rejected.
The decision of three actors in the Sydney Theatre Company's new production of The Seagull to wear the keffiyeh during curtain call sparked a frenzy of condemnation from members of the Jewish community.

Maybe taxpayers should own shares in Qantas. That way we could share in the profits that we help produce by propping up the company. It would also compensate us for Qantas’ price gouging.
The case against Qantas isn’t over. Now the Federal Court will resume hearing claims for compensation for the illegally sacked workers & claims for the imposition of significant financial penalties.
“So why did the ABC go ahead and hire her? Especially if it wasn’t prepared to defend her?
The answer? Weakness and incompetence.
Incompetence for not doing its homework and for not thinking it through.
And weakness for not sticking with Lattouf…”

Kudos to the ABC and to Compass for this film. And kudos to
@antloewenstein
for his extraordinary courage. I’m amazed at how he has endured the relentless attacks on him and his family.
Love to share the powerful opening sequence of the new film, ‘Not In My Name’, airing on
@ABCTV
on 5 May at 6.30pm on the Compass program.
It’s directed by the fantastic Brietta Hague.
It’s about Palestine, Gaza, critcal Judaism, my work and life et al.
I’m rapt to announce
When the managing director of the ABC bans its journalists from using terms like ‘genocide’ and ‘apartheid’, he is doing so out of fear. The ABC is required to fearlessly report the truth. If either of those terms reflect the truth of the situation, there should be no ban.
The Catholic Church has vast wealth including in an extraordinary property portfolio. It can fund compensation for victims of child sexual abuse if it chooses.
I’m very proud to support the
@jewishcouncilAU
. It’s testament to its terrific work that it’s stale, right wing critics in the Jewish community are fogging on about its name- not its work.
The indomitable Miriam Margolyes OBE has a message in support of the Jewish Council! She calls for all of us Jews to “shout, beg, scream for a ceasefire”
🇦🇺 The Search For The Palace Letters, Monday, 8pm, ABC. This remarkable documentary tells the story of Professor Jenny Hocking, the historian who took on the Australian Government and HM Queen Elizabeth II in a landmark legal battle - and won.
THREAD: Two years ago, myself & Sally Neighbour were subjected to a vile attack by The Australian. Today a
@AusPressCouncil
adjudication finds the editorial was inaccurate, unfair, lacked balance, caused unnecessary distress & not in the public interest.
Congrats to the mighty
@TWUAus
, it’s leader
@TWUMichaelKaine
& the 1700 sacked workers. It’s been a long ,tough struggle to get to this point. Kudos to our fabulous team of barristers & lawyers at
@YouCanCountOnMB
. This is one of the biggest & best.
Australia’s support for Palestinian participation in the UN is consistent with support for peace, justice, and self-determination for the Palestinian people in a two-state solution.
“Australia no longer accepts that recognition can only come at the end of the peace process.”
Qantas’ illegal treatment of its customers through selling pretend flights is symbolic of a wider problem- our major corporations aren’t regulated properly.
“This is quite amazing,” HSU boss Gerard Hayes welcomes a wage rise of up to 28% for direct aged care workers. Support staff will get a lower rise of 3-7%. Details
@10NewsFirst
Whether or not you agree with the notion that
@latingle
should have to communicate like an automaton at a writer’s festival,
@MargaretSimons
is correct to note that corporate brand management -as practised by the ABC- ‘feeds the beast’.
The High Court will deliver judgment in Qantas v TWU next Wednesday.
The Qantas appeal challenges findings that it illegally sacked 1700 baggage handlers during the pandemic. I’m crossing my fingers for the
@TWUAus
& the sacked baggage handlers. It’s been a long battle.
One of the issues raised is whether the ABC sacked Antoinette by reason of her political opinion in breach of s772(1) (f) of the Fair Work Act. This was the provision invoked by Scott McIntyre when he was sacked by SBS several years ago.

about the big 4 consultancies. Allan Fels is right to call for those conflict - riddled companies to be broken up.
Are some Liberal Party members booing at the reference to the “traditional owners” of the land on which the NSW State Convention, “A New Hope” is being held?

How much tax are those in the top 5% of income distribution willing to pay?
What services do they want to cut? Defence, NDIS, Health, Education, mitigating climate change, the pension, Jobstart ? Did they oppose JobKeeper & refuse to accept it on principle?
This is what Marcia Langton actually said. She was referring to some of the racist arguments being wielded against the Voice. Again this is a small and mildly expressed selection of the racist stereotypes being used. Via

Anti semitism is not ok. False reports based on doctored video are not okay. Vilifying those who reported the truth is also not okay. Do you agree?
I urge ABC board members, journalists , academics & others who care to obtain transcripts of the 2 day hearing in the Fair Work Commission- it’s publicly available. Then compare it to statements like this that have been put out since the sacking of
@antoinette_news
.
I’m hoping this decision galvanises the critical work that the Albanese government is doing to restore the capacity and integrity of the Australian Public Service. It will take considerable effort and time. A hugely important democratic project.
