Those of us working in advanced ed have been saying this for years - it's nice to have this view become more mainstream. We get accused of not believing in kids, when our approach assumes children can achieve impressive things if supported & provided w/appropriate opportunities.

The new "equity" approach to math education is pure IQism. It starts by assuming that kids who aren't good at math are innately ineducable, and concludes that the only way to create equity is to disallow the kids it assumes to be genetic super-people from studying math.

Roughly once per generation, we see a groundswell of opposition to the idea of giftedness (and academic excellence in general). The last wave was in the early-mid 90s, so we were overdue. As others have noted, that wave is building, and we need to be proactive to stop it #gtchat

Me 25 years ago: I can't believe my professor just put on "computer glasses" to read his screen. This dude is so old. And that's not a good look. Me five minutes ago: Oh my gosh, I love these computer glasses so much. They look good, too.

There are times, when teaching late at night, that I bounce between zoom breakout rooms with such skill that I feel invincible. Then I inevitably do something stupid like accidentally "end meeting for all" in the middle of class and feel all too human. I really miss the classroom

Working with SC educators is always a great experience! The "find the special child" model is often used but ultimately creates more problems than it solves. Better to be inclusive and provide a range of advanced services for a bigger group of talented students.

A1: All students deserve to have their intellectual needs met. A year's growth for each student, as the saying goes. Too many show up the first day of school and know most of what's going to be "taught" to them that year. #gtchat

I'm starting to think the idea of a national lockdown, if done well, will be much less disruptive and much safer than our plan of ... well, of ... I mean, the plan to do ... wait, we STILL don't have COVID or economic recovery plans in place?

I wish we could do a 3 week national lockdown; pay each household 1000 per week to stay home; require & provide masks to *everyone* then test everyone so we can start over in Sept. I’m pretty sure it would be less disruptive & expensive than what we’ve lost. I miss everyone.

Important paper, highly recommended. We had a working paper ~6yrs ago w/ roughly similar findings: Access to AP/IB/DC mattered most for college success for students who otherwise may not have had any advanced ed opportunities. Access to advanced learning matters!

They're called #excellencegaps and we've been talking about them for over a decade. Educators around the country have developed interventions and are actively implementing them. We're making progress! @NAGCGIFTED @bwrighted @MichaelPetrilli

The solution to the issues that face our public schools is not to give up on seeking excellence in our students. We should be expanding gifted programs to every community, not eliminating them.

The point about courage is worth emphasizing. As a young stutterer, the scariest moments of my life were having to give a presentation or even just talk in class - at times it was terrifying. Brayden keeps throwing himself out there, which is incredibly brave and courageous.

On this International Stuttering Awareness Day, I want everyone to remember that the barriers you face don't define who you are. They didn't for me –– as a young boy who stuttered –– and they certainly don't for Brayden. What defines you is your heart and your courage.

Surprised to hear "we need to arm teachers" today. NY & TX killers were confronted by armed guard/police but the killers wore body armor. So we arm teachers & outfit them in full body armor every day? That's just stupid. There's only one solution, as the UK/Aussies/NZ have shown

This is great work! Each week we get more info/data about auto-enrollment. It is all very encouraging. I’ve come to believe that auto-enrollment should be standard operating procedure in all U.S. schools. State-level policymakers: Make this happen in 2024 in your state!
