One of the best things we started doing this year was playing 1 on 1 no dribble from the charge circle. Forced guys to evolve some creativity, use fakes/shakes, pivots, and learn to play angles. Showed up in our finishing by the end too.

A super simple BLOB we ran this year and got some easy shots off of. Was inspired by @Qmartin37 - who has some GREAT BLOB stuff. Start in a diamond. Cross the wings, Back screen and roll hard. Gets more shots than you'd think.

You want to get better at handling the ball vs. pressure? Do this. It's random. Defense gets to foul. We put a time limit on it and had winners and losers. Did it once a week during summer workouts and noticed results.

Jungle shooting is an excellent activity for developing shooters! Set it up with 3 offensive players & 2 defenders. The offense can move freely but only shoot 3's. The defense aims to disrupt every shot, while the offense strives to score as many BRADS as possible in 45 seconds.

Something we toyed with This summer was the idea of "partner inbounds". Basically just setting players up, partnering them up, and letting them do whatever they want - screen, cut, etc. So here 5 & 1 are partners and 3 & 2 are partners. They can do anything with that partner.

Easy rule - if a prep school wants you and it’s founded, run by, or coached by a dad of one of the players just say no. We all know the thinly veiled agenda that’s happening there.

A big thing I learned as I’ve moved on in coaching: Culture is so much more about the small daily interactions and expectations than it is plans, presentations, handbooks, etc. It’s all important but it’s the micro interactions that really move the needle.

Here is what we did Day #1 . I don't share a ton because let's be honest, my career record isn't much to look at, but I really like what we are doing with Genius Time and wanted to share that.

Adding "Hurricane" to 5v5 time this year when we have 3 teams. (Click the pictures to see) *2 teams play 5v5m,3rd team w/one under rim and rest on the side *At end new team comes in, defense gets back. Old offense (B) sprints to opposite end to ready spots *Repeat *Vary emphasis

I’ve noticed... When coaches coach for wins, notoriety, noticeable impact, or legacy they almost always end up unhappy b/c there are never enough of those&frankly those all fade. When coaches coach b/c they love the game and serving others they usually end up feeling fulfilled.

I think we will see more crack back ball screens in the future. Bringing the cutter one way and then screening back the opposite way so he’s catching right into the ball screen. Anyone doing a lot of this currently?

Studying some BLOBs plays on a rainy day. I'd suggest looking at South Dakota State's stuff - there is a reason they led the nation in PPP on in bounds. Good stuff.

Coaches this is great stuff to watch!! My three takeaways: 1. Loved the quote on no bad decisions if you go hard. 2. Love that they give up chopping feet on close outs for shooters. 3. @NBAcoaching is one of the best coaches in the business

I’ve said it a lot - he’s one of the top guys on my list of coaches I’d love to spend time around.

SSG I came up w/for free throws- we call it “21 Free Throw”. 1 shoots two FT while 2&3 rebound. A made FT is +2, off reb is +2,& +1 for a def reb. After two FT 1 goes to 3’s spot, 3 to 2’s spot, and 2 to 1’s spot. Play till someone gets 21. (Note: could go teams w/3 more in lane)

I think learning about Don Meyer and his philosophies should be mandatory for every new coach.

As a white person I’ll leave this here for thought. If you protested, supported, donated, etc great! You really want to support people of color you need to do it when no one is watching. Will you say something when friend/family makes a joke or comment&only white people are there?

Rest In Peace to one of the best coaches, friends, and men I know. Coach Matthew McCollister was one of the good guys in the business and he will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him. Please keep him and his wonderful family in your thoughts. 💔

Coaches - Something simple we are going to try this year that I'm excited about is having all of our players do a daily check in using a Google Doc. Have them put down hours of sleep, how they are feeling physically, how they are feeling mentally,& an option to share life stuff.

The thing I love most about what @CoachPerkins put together w/ @Coaches_Clinic clinics was he didn’t just get heavy hitters. He got great assistant, youth, euro coaches, high school coaches, etc. He also covered such a variety of topics. As he winds down we all own him a THANK YOU!
