Spain brutally exposed England’s poor shifting off the ball in the 2nd half, which produced overloads around their midfield. In the phase for the first goal, Shaw faced a 2v1 with Yamal inside. Spain added more box-crashing runs from Morata (+ Olmo in this phase.)

Best tactical and technical game so far between Austria 🇦🇹 and France 🇫🇷 at #EURo2024 . Austria’s off ball work led the way. A narrow counterpressing system that was set-up by wingers blocking the pass to the FB and Austrian covering whilst a team mate stepped up aggressively.

Villa’s passive 4-3-1-2/4-1-3-2 has caused Brighton so many circulation problems: - Situational pressing from Watkins/Diaby outwards and blocking angles. - Narrow block = Brighton’s rotation areas shut. - McGinn/Kamara can move to cover Gilmour when ball moves down right.

Positional adjustments from Spain 🇪🇸 in-possession which disrupted the French 🇫🇷 man marking in midfield: - Williams/Yamal more narrow positions. - Morata drops left to be free between the lines. - Rodri moves behind pressing Kanté. - Yamal drops to pull Rabiot = Ruiz free man.

Spain 🇪🇸 controlled Italy 🇮🇹 through a intense press that takes some big risks. Wingers pressed infield, both Pedri and Ruiz engage high and follow the outward pass to overload the channel. Italy struggled to settle in possession throughout the first period. #EURO2024

Smart switch by the Swiss 🇨🇭 that disrupted Kroos’ control. Yakin added Rieder, which saw more 3142/352 situations and created 2v1s in the high block vs the German 🇩🇪 buildup. Angled presses from WBs arranged the traps, attacker takes the ball deep = collapse towards carrier.

Yerry Mina - age profile and injury record is very questionable, but a great gamble on a free transfer this summer: - Can operate in high line. - Excellent inside the box, a colossus in the air. - Rarely caught out of defensive position and comfy on the ball too.

Atalanta off ball intensity has suffocated Leverkusen, making a lot of miscues + loose passes like this one: - Palacios plays back into pressure. - Atalanta collapse onto pivot (double man marking.) - Wirtz came short as Koopmeiners stepped, Grimaldo in no position to exploit.

Clubs like Sunderland, Villa (2011-16), Hamburg, don’t blip overnight. Everton has hit a trajectory as worse as those clubs. This is the climax of years of rot and incompetence, from the top down. Crap recruitment in a structureless club have come to haunt & they can’t get out.

Southampton's Pressing Principles (v Newcastle): - Medium block, strictly maintains its 4-2-2-2 shape. - Narrow wingers create central compactness, encourages U-shape circulation. - Creating traps down the channels with overloads. - Blindside pressing triggers on receivers.

It’s funny how narratives work in football. Wondering why Dyche just allowed Brighton to dominate the ball. Wondering why Everton didn’t try and hold the ball. Rumbling about “negative tactics.” And yet… when we tried to play out… this happened?

(Thread) Explaining Everton’s game plan vs Brighton can be seen in the execution of their 2nd goal: - Passive 4-1-4-1/4-3-2-1 (McNeil + Iwobi situationally deeper than Garner/Doucouré in midfield line.) - Access to double pivot denied, so Webster tried to bait press by carrying.

Cannot be underestimated how important the switch to the 4-5-1 was for Everton, not just in the low block. Triggering the counterpress, through CM pressure, and pushing Arsenal’s deep buildup to the wings played a big part in stunting their flexibility (creating this scenario.)

Of course, a buildup under Martínez has to have its flaws. Portugal 🇵🇹 have plenty of players in similar roles, Cancelo inverted from the left, Fernandes + Vitinha double pivot and Silva laterally roaming on Czechia 🇨🇿 defensive line. Lots of passes, not a lot of progression.

Georgia 🇬🇪 has been playing 532 off the ball for quite sometime. All the better for their compactness being kept and organisation, but Martinez’s selection for a 343 was a bad choice for Portugal🇵🇹. A phenomenal defensive display, but we’ve seen this game before with Martínez.

So many tools in this Spanish 🇪🇸 team that a super Georgian 🇬🇪 low block couldn’t keep up with. Williams + Yamal dominant down the channels, carrying & creating once cutting inside. Morata sticks to the striker spot as Pedri gave plenty of access to shooters on edge of the box.

England super passive has led to zero counter ability, Spain pushed them back early with moves like these. - CB carrying to Rodri line makes 3v2 - Morata double movement to drop makes 3v2 - Passing angle opened with Rice and Mainoo split.

Richarlison is hilariously mislabelled by those who don’t watch him. A combative, direct and versatile forward. May not have had the shot efficiency of a few seasons ago, but is great peeling off the left and a top worker off the ball. Those runs would be a great asset to Kane.

The game is going to be remembered for Ronaldo antics but Slovenia 🇸🇮 another example of a mid/lower tier nation with a solid defensive arrangement and Portugal 🇵🇹 another underwhelming favourite to deep. Slovenia’s 4-4-2 turned to 5-3-2 with man marking the halfspace option.

A new big read from me about box midfields, inverted fullbacks and the conflict of control. Fullbacks in elite teams went from overlapping for crosses and cutbacks into another cog of the deeper buildup unit. Is it a sacrifice worth making?

Slovakia 🇸🇰 a great indication of how much stronger lower ranked nations are in competitions now. Teams figured out they could press England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 pretty early in the group stages and Slovakia’s medium block caused a lot of problems to their unstructured buildup.

Important formation adaptations from Ten Hag in the second half: - 3-2-5 into 2-2-6. - more aggressive positions from FBs kept Leeds wingers as part of midfield line. - Weghorst as the 10, combative and close linkup to retain ball. - Rashford as ST, narrow forwards to pin FBs.
